CUT-OFF FROM FAIRBURY TO HERINGTOM
Haw I. In Will Give Omaha Johhrri
Dlrert Oatlet to Southwestern
Territory Early In the
Irir Year.
The Rock Island baa decided to expend
11,000,000 In permanent Improvements
along Its line In Iowa, Nebraska and on
West to Denver In 1903. These Improve
ments are to be in the form of the bal
lasting of tracks and Increasing depot fa
cilities. The rear just closing shows tre
mendous Improvement! by the Rock Island
through the southwest and the new year
will bring this campaign of betterment
to the north.
The most Important of all the new work
to be done In thia section during the next
year Is of great Interest to Omaha. It Is
the construction of a new and direct line
from Falrbury, Neb., to Ilerlngton, Kan.,
establishing a cut-off that will form a
continuous connection with the main line
and give a perfect outlet to the great
Southwest and even to the gulf. This will
afford Omaha Jobbers a short and direct
line to thia valuable tributary country
where they are already shipping large
quantities of goods.
Omaha wares have for some time found
Increasing sale In the southwest, but owing
to the lack of perfect railroad facilities
the trade has not reached the proportions
It might and doubtless will when the Rock
Island completes Its new cut off, which
will bs as early In the new year as possi
ble. All the work contemplated under the
appropriation of $2,000,000, and the con
struction of this new line. Is to be under
taken early In the spring and pushed with
very facility.
PROCESS BUTTER IN DEMAND
Manefaeterer. laable Seeare
Raoaah Milk to rill Their
Reaalremeat.
There la a shortage of milk which threat
ens to reduce the local output of butter of
the cheaper qualities. One manufacturer
said: "We could manufacture and sell 10,
000 pounds of process butter a day, but can
not get the milk necessary for churning the
butter after It has been otherwise pre
pared. We could use thirty cans a day,
and ft Is only by hustling that we can get
ten enns. The result Is that process butter
Is higher than It would otherwise bs and
sales of uncolored oleomargarine are conse
i qucntly Increased."
j With all of the shortage In the milk sup
ply the process butter manufacturers of the
; state have done a large business since the
I law placing their product under the con-
' trol of the t'nlted States went Into effect.

, part of which was paid by two Omaha and

DRAWS HANGING BY CHANCE
Joseph Fater Decides Mode of Bad
las Life by Drawlag
Lots.
Three small slips of paper decided the
manner In which Joseph Fater, the young
Roumanian who committed suicide at the
Victoria hotel Monday morning, should
bring about his own destruction. The young
foreigner courted death to relieve him from
the cares which encompassed his life and
held a solitaire lottery In which he decided
the mode of ending his life.
Taking the slips of paper he wrote upon
then the words, "hanging," "shooting" and
"poison." Shuffling these together, he drew
one of them, and the choice fell to the
hanging route and was carried out. These
facts are revealed In the translation of the
letter left by Fater to his brother Bam.
The coroner's Jury decided at a late hour
Monday afternoon that Faler came to his
death by his own hand. The funeral was
held this afternoon from Bratley's under
taking rooms, the body being taken to
Pleasant Mill cemetery for Interment.

"My little boy toek the croup one night."
aya F. D. Reynolds of Mansfield, O., "and
grew so bad you could hear him breathe all
ver the house. I thought ha would die, but
a few doses of One Minute Cough Cure re
lieved and aent hint to sleep. That's the
last we heard of the croup." Oae Minute
Cough Cure la absolutely safe and acts at
