How shall a girl be Introduced? at a re
ception, at a dance or at series of dinners
given by the Immediate family or by
friends? The old-fahloned reception cov
ered a multitude ot sins, for It was possible,
even with an enormously long visiting list,
to aive an entertainment and not hurt any
one's feelings, since all ages could be In
cluded In the Invitations and, like a wed
ding, many Individuals of social standing,
who bad not taken any prominent part tn
social life, could be remembered. For the
last few years, however, these large after
noon receptions have been going out of
fashion.
Four days are often chosen when the
mother and her daughter receive their
friends. The ides. of the four days la that
there may not be too many people present
at one time. The difficulty Is that each oae
ot the guests Is likely to wait until the last
day, so that the preceding afternoons will
be dull, and the fourth so crowded as to be
unbearable. With a long visiting list, even
after It has been revised by some social
mentor. It Is Impossible to Invite even de
sirable acquaintances to dinner and to go
through the list would be to take up every
evening during the season. A dsnoe can
include but ono set, or, at tho most, two
the debutantes and the younger married
people and then there will be no end of
heart burnings and jealousies, tor few pri
vate houses have ball rooms large enough
to Invite everybody who is desirable and to
maintain a rigid excluslveness la poslblo
only to a favored few. But this problem
has to be faced by many mothers of debu
tante daughters of 1902-0.1, and consequently
there will be every form of entertainment
given. The old-fashioned reception card to
that effect that Mr. and Mrs. and Miss
Blank will be at home trom 4 to 7 will be
the accepted form of invitation, and Mrs.
Blank and Miss Blsnk will receive Mrs.
Blank and Mist Blank's friends (and ene
mies) while Mr. Blank will put In an en
forced appearance Into In the afternoon. In
this way at least 2,000 persons cn be dis
posed of.
Thin and thick mater'als will be used for
ball growns. The conventional white mus
lin has been Idealized by quantities of laco
and ribbons, but still Is supposedly the
white muMln frock with a sash, such as
has been the lot of the debutante for many
and many a long year. A curious fad of
the moment Is the sattn gown for balls
made of the very lightest shades or ot
white, In as simple and picturesque fashion
ai possible, but still ot satin. This is more
or less an English fad, and the folds of the
net and , tulle arranged In scarf fashion
ground the shoulders can always be renewed
so as to Keep the frock fresh and dainty.
Long trains for the house art permitted, but
ball gowns are decidedly shorter than last
year, and the street gown, not the reception
one. Is always made short

are seen In cloth, xlbellne, cheviot and all
the familiar suiting materials. The de
sign Illustrated Is admirable and allows
the "slot seams" to exceptional advantage
The original Is made of xlbellne In hunters'
green with trimming of fancy black braid,
but all the fabrics of the season are appro
priate. The blouse Is fitted with the fashionable
double slot seams that extend to tho
shoulders on fronts and back, underarm
and shoulder seams completing the ad
justment. To the lower edge of the back
are attached shapely pointed tabs, and
basque portions with rounded corners fit
smoothly over the hips. The belt, which
crosses in front, has ends pointed to match,
the tabs In back and conceals the Joinings
of these portions. The sleeves as shown
re In bell ahape and allow of slipping on
and off with ease, but can be ga hered
Into cuffs in bishop style when preferred.
The blouse can be worn open to the waist
lino or buttoned over, as shows Is tho
mall cut.
The skirt Is cut In nine gores. At tho
edge of oach gore are laid tuck plaits that
meet to form the slot seams, and are
stitched flat to flounce depth, ihe seam
proper being bidden at underfold ot plait.
The plaits fall free at the lower edge to
provide the fashionable flare. The fullness
at the back Is laid In Inverted plaits that
aro pressed flat and can be stitched sev
eral Inches from the top as Illustrated or
to correspond with the other plaits It so
desired.
