NEW TORK. Nov. 14 Movements of
leading stocks tn today's market were Ir
regular for the part, this condition being
due la a great measure to the Increase of
strength la foreign exchange. Demand
sterling was emoted at 4 .'-.. the advance
ree-nrUr.-r largely from further selling of
storks hers for London, together wftk heavy
purchases of exchange by prominent In
ternational banking bouse. While the high
rate put this center nearer the gold export
point. It la a till the opinion of experts that
pressor will be brought to bear to pre
vent an outflow of gold eve should ex
change reach the level where transactions
of that sort could ba profitably made.
N even, he lees It Is doubted that exports can
be delayed much longer If London con
tinues a heavy seller of securities here. In
asmuch aa the local market also has to
provide for Important pavroettta maturing
this month. Time money was comparatively
easy, most kcans for ninety days or longer
being made at 5"- per cent. It la known
that considerable outside money not held
by local batiks has been loaned at this
figure In the last few day. Recetvtng no
encouragement from London, where the
market for Americans was dull and aptrtt
less, opening prices were generally lower,
though a tendency to Improvement waa
soon shown. Trading In such stocks as
Reading. Manhattan, Metropolitan. St, Paul,
Sugar and Colorado Fuel and other active
lasuea waa at a lower level, but some of
theo stock, notably St Paul and Read
ing, soon recovered. Rock Island Issue
made early gains of 1 and r. per cent for
the common and preferred shares, respec
tively, on heavy transaction The strength
of these stocks brought a sharp recovery,
but tho ltt soon developed another reac
tionary tendency, prepare being soon
shown against St. Paul. Missouri P rifle.
Southern Pacific. Reading and New York
Central, all declining a point or more, with
greater Insse in Canadian Pacific and
Hocking Valley. Ixmisvtiie at Nashvtll
waa decidedly erratic starting with a one
point decline, rallying IS and then declin
ing almost as much- The strena-th of the
Rock Island was meanwhile well sus
tained. During the early period there were
few moTements of Importance In the in
dustrials. Colorado Fuel displaying further
heaviness on reports of a renewal of the
contest for control, but in tho later trans
actions recovered, with a net gain of 2
points on moderate transaction In the
special class Pressed Steel Car waa higher,
while a single sale of New York Air Brake
was recorded at a decline of points.
Trading continued dull and largely profes
sional until the afternoon, when a new
movement tn Manhattan advanced that
stock to 15SS. which it declined i points,
closing with a net gain of 2 points on very
large transaction. The great bulk of Man
hattan buying was by Goula broker The
movement In Manhattan stimulated baying
tn New Tork Central and Penn.ytvania, but
Metropolitan and Brooklyn Transit were
little affected either way. The bear fac
tion traded cautiously, but took courage
from the absence of any news regarding
the so-called Manhattan "deal." nd made
a successful attack on that and other
stock New Tork Central and St. Paul
were forced down, while attempts to move
Amalgamated Copper met with Boston sell
ing. Short covering in the final dealings
ws hardly of sufficient volume to prevent
an Irregular close. London sold fully 26.10
share, a tctal of about 115 .WW, In the last
four day and bought nothing. The lack
of London buying was attributed partly to
the approaching fortnightly settlement
there.
Bonds were Irregular and rather dull
Early lose c a were largely recovered when
the stock market developed atrength. Total
sale, par value. C-ftM.una. United Btatea
2s and the is declined V per cent on the
last call.

CATTLE There were more cattle here
today than arrived a week ago. and aiso
more than were generally expected. As a
result the tendency on tho part of Both
packers and feeder buyers was to pound
the market. As a general thing, however,
the deslrabia classes did not show much
change.
There was about the usual number of
,cornted steers included In the offerings, but
nsost of them were of inferior quality. The
market waa slow and very uneven, tho
same aa It was last week, and whiia the
market could not be quoted much of any
lower It was certainly no higher. Buyers
seemed to bo very indifferent and did not
take hold of area th better grades with
any Bfe.
The cpw market wa also slow and weak.
It was noticeable, however, that the taa
tiers sold without much trouble at steady
price, while the choicer kinds were tho
one to be neglected- la soma) cases sellers
were calling the market just about steady,
while tn others they were calling It a shade
easier. It wa very evident that the snap
and ton of a week ago were lacking.
Bulla, veal calves and stags, whil not
very active, broaght about steady prices.
With the exception of a few of the very
choicest loads of stockers and feeders th
market on stock cattle waa lower today.
Titer were a good many cattle carried
over Sunday in th hands ef speculators,
and comparatively few buyers arrived thla
morning, so speculators were naturally
bearish- Tho market was very uneven, so
that wbila some sales were not ever a shad
lower, others were fully a dime lower.
The better grades af western beef steers
old without muck rrouoie at about steady
prices, but the cotamoner grade were slow
snd lower. Rang cows were steady to a
nttle lower, th declin bet rig snoatly am
ths better grade All but the best grades
of stockers aud feeders were also alow and
lower. Representative sale:

SHEEP There wag nwt k heavy supply
of sheep and lambs her today and be
side that the proportion of fat stuff to
th total receipt was not large. Packers
ail seemed to nave liberal orders, so that
the market opened active at fully steady
prices aa compared with the cioaa of last
week. Fed wethers and yearling mixed
sold aa high as 13.75. native ewes brought
83. Bl. fed western ewes t3-2 and some fed
lambs tASa. Anything at all desirable tn
the way of killers sold at a rapid rata
and everything waa disposed of In good
season.
There were not very many feeder buyers
on hand thla morning, so that the market
on that class of stock was rather slow.
Sellers, though, wera holding for steady
prices and the bunches that changed hand
looked about steady with last week
