Omaha Jobbers, particularly ' those Ir
hardware lines, are concerned as to tht
effect of the restoration of freight ratei
which has been announced from Chicago.
A year ago ihe . condition was almost
Identical with that which now obtains.
The rates' from Chicago 'to Denver had
been cut on certain 'grades of hardware
snd the local jobbers had made heavy
sales on the bsl"ot 'th rate existing
In October, November and December.
Their ' sales, particularly of nails and
barbed wire, were 'heavy, and the. margin '
Was somewhat less In many cases than tho
difference between the existing rate and
that which had been In force before the
reduction was made. When the news ot
the restoration was 'sent out there were
approximately 100 cars to be filled at the
mills and It was a race between Father
Time and the factories. Last year the
factories won out and no local Jobber lost
money by the restoration of rates.
This year the total orders awaiting de.
livery are somewhat larger than last year,
but the orders which have been taken on
the basis of the existing freight rates are,
probably, not so large. At the same tlm
the mills are further behind with orden
and not as many goods can be delivered
between now and January 1, not only be
cause the mills are bo far behind, but
because cars are scarcer than they were
year agtj.

newsboys, did a twenty-minute yaudevllli
tunt with a gobular gobbler at Fifteenth
and Farnam streets yesterday mornlnf
which was remarked upon as well worth
the price of admission. The turkey had
wandered from the fattening coops of do
one knows who' to Farnam street and
started down that thoroughfare with strut
ting stride. Immediately boys were In pur- '
suit. Turkey, already high, went still
higher. In fact, it went quite to the top of
a telegraph pole in front 6f the corner drug
store, Joseph essayed to climb within
reach. So did a lineman,- and. the lineman
seemed to have a show ot doing
what be - started in to do. The bird
tumbled to what'' was' doing and ai
promptly tumbled from the perch. Its
next stop was a half block farther down
street and there the real mixup occurred
Joseph was - there early. So were two
negroes. So was a policeman. So were
other newsboys. Through one brief flutter
log moment there was visible a maelstrem
ot feathers, feet and fly cop. Then Joseph
and the turkey emerged the latter in the
former's arms. The boy and the hlrd, like
the lion and the lamb, will lie down to
gether and with about the same result.

some other things that common people bare.
