Imposter Preaenta Himself at Jail la
Peoria wltn Forged Writ af
Habeaa Corpus.
PEORIA, 111., Oct. 1. Borne days ago a
man who called himself Debold. and claim
ing to be an employe of the state attor
neys offlce In Chicago, cam here and
called on the sheriff, atatlng that a pris
oner by the name of Williams was wanted
In Chicago for burglary. Debold then
called at the jail and demanded the sur
render ot the prisoner, which ha was de
nied. Night before last th man Debold, who
now represented himself aa a deputy
sheriff, called at the Jail and again de
manded the release ot the prisoner, pre
senting a habeas corpus writ. The deputy
in charge dnled him this and Debold
learned that the mau waa to be taken to
Chicago by two deputies from the Peoria
office.
Immediately th Imposter left on an early
train for Chicago to Intercept them as it
is supposed and to make a demonstration
and secure the prisoner by force. On ar
riving there the Peoria officers were advlsea
no legal steps bad been taken to secure th
transfer of the prisoner.

way, who has Just returned from New
York, has issued a signed statement. In
which he says: "I have presented the Den

New England, and I have the direct pledg
of their assistance In securing the fundi .
to build the railway."
