ing, which showed considerable atrengtn
throughout the day. The dealings were
smaller than usual In other stocks of this
class and there was a disposition In gen
eral to await active developments before
pursuing active operation In this quarter.
Recent speculative leader among the
grangers. Pacifies and Southwestern stocks
were bought ireeiy ana tne entire maraet
showed decided strength at one time or
another. St. Paul. Louisville and Illinois
Central were conspicuous In the day' deal
ings and made exceptional advance 01 i
points. Price elsewhere averaged a point
pretty generally, with quite an active de
mand In a number of specialties. The
Gould stocks as a group received the most
consistent support, tne neavy ouying 01
Missouri Pacific having a sustaining effect
on the lower priced stocks. Some disap
pointment was felt over the heaviness of
the London market and as the "arbitrage
dealers turned, sellers, the early market
showed some weakness. Realizing sales,
however., by the local traders were soon
overcome by the appearance of large or
ders for the transcontinental stock and
the movement throughout the day wa
mainly upward, although momentarily
checked at times by profit taking. Trad
ing lacked the breadth and activity of the
early operations of the week, but there
was a marked undertone of confidence In
the general situation. Sterling exchange
ratea made a further decline today, demand
bills declining to- 8486,875, and there was
some talk of the llkllhood of early Imports
of gold. The payment today of the second
Installment of 817,000,000 on the Ixmlavtlle
It Nashville account waa looked to as con
tributing toward a further ease in the
money situation, as the funds will be
speedily redistributed again through the
usual banking channel. . Payment wa
made by the ubtreaury today of $200,000
on transfer aocount from Ban Francisco
and it Is expected that further consign
ments of Klondike gold will be available
to the tnoney market In a few days. No
currency transfers have been made to the
Interior by this Institution this week and
there was a feeling In banking circle that
the general conditions favored lower money
rate.
In the latter part of the session stock
trading waa virtually stagnant at -times,
especially ' when the market was under
pressure from realising sales. There were
occasional bursts of activity and these as a
rule were marked by advancing ' prices.
Profit-taking sales outweighed the buying
orders In the final hour and there were a
number of Important reactions, which were
not checked by a final upturn In St. Paul
to the best. The closing waa dull and
easy. The bond market was dull today.

CATTLE There- were more cattle on sale
today than arrived yesterday, but In spite
of that fact the market held up in very
aatlafactory manner and everything at all
desirable met with ready aale without mucn
chang In prices rrora inoso in lore yesterday.
Thar were aulte A few corn-fed cattle
here again today that were rather lacking
in quality. In fact, they were only warmed
un. and Backers were very alow about plac-
In, a hid on them. Saleamen In ome cea
thought in mar set wa a nine lower, out
the trouble mat ucn came nave oeen
selling at very uneven prices all along, ao
that it IS bard to tell what th market I
on them. There la no mistaking the fact
that buyers, prefer tne 'western rangers 10
that clasa of corn cattle.
Tha cow market wa fairly active and as
a rule Just about yesterday B price war
paid. Buyer seemed to b anxloua for
upplte, and the better clae In particu
lar changed hand freely. There waa poa-
itbly soma unevaneea to . tne traae, oui

HOGS There were moaf )Og In
this mornlgn than for TSom little
past, and a a reault prices at all points
took a big drop. At this market the de
cline ampunted to 16-20c, as compared with
yesterday' average. The atrlctly choice
light and butcher weights were, per hap.
not over 15o lower, but all others wer
154720c lower. The bulk of the good hog
anlil rla-ht around 17.00. with the choice
loads going from 87 00 to 87.07',4. The pack
ing grades sold largely at 36.95. with the
leaa desirable grade from 86.90 to 86.96.
It was far from being an active market
for sellers were not at all anxious to
take the price offered, and, keatde that,
several of the tralna wer late In arriving,
which of course, orolonged IB market.
There wa aom reaction on th last and
of th market from th sudden drop, and
the laat arrivals sold a little Vet ter than
tha early hoir. Th do oould probably
be best daacrlbed by calling tt a little firmer
and mora active. Representative sates:

There wa also a liberal demand for feed
