CLOSE IN ALL OF THE NTS IS LOWER lba Board of Trad l Peteat Farter Agatast Higher CHtCAOO. Sept. U Frosts of reported killing severity narl no effect on the price ot .grains today. Kxpert corn shorts, after snalycing the situation, declared them harmless. Prices lost all eemblsnce rf firmness and when It beceme, known that JudgeChvtrkLShad ruled against the board and Ita members who were defending the July oata comer esses, genersl slums fol lowed. At the clone Heptember wheat waa Sp fT, Lecember wheat Se lower, Hp- tember corn lc down, Iiecruiber corn '! 'so down and December oata 'c off. January provisions closed unchanged to 10c lower. Corn started a trifle better than It left off laat night. The froat waa the stesdy Ing Influence. Reports, however, were con flicting aa to the damage done, especially thoae irom Iowa. Home advlcea had It that the crop waa hurt to 50 par cent, while othera eald the damage waa alight. Ijul alda ordera we. a light and the crowd Bonn turned toward the celling aide. Warmer weather prediction had much to do with the change In aentiment, but In thla, aa In every other pit on the floor, the court'a ruling against the power of the Hoard of Trade directory to enforce lta ruling on marginal dopoMtt had a depressing effect. Receipt a ahowed come Inrresse, aa well aa a better percentage of contract grading than for aome time past. Tbe beat prlcea of the day were made at the etart, although ah excellent export business developed. Iwcember started at 441n and Blumued lc to a weak cloae. .U c down at 43'no. Beptember aold from snr to Witc and broke to a weak cloae. lc off to fc. Xecelpta were 2"5 cars, to of con tract graue. Wheat oened without much change In price, but did ot long maintain Ita stearll neaa. There waa a teellng early that the further troata would brave up corn to aurh an extent that wheat would be drawn after. When corn dlaappolnted there waa liberal aelllng on aome fairly bearlah fea turea and a dip reaulted. Kecelpta lor the northweat gave unmistakable signs of an Increase In the aprlng movement and the weather waa a further aid In that respect. Cables were lower, the aentiment waa bearish and there waa aome aelllng on stop ordera. Large eatlmatea of world'a shlp mente over 10.000,000 bushels for the week had Ita weakening Influence, aa did the talk of quiet aelllng by a heavy holder of long wheat. September opened 4c up at iVi f?U to J2"c and rallied fairly, al though the close waa weak, so lower at Tic. December started a shade tip to a shade down at 6Htc and closed at Ita lower price, S2o lower at 684.0. ' Local recelpta were 1S2 care, none of con tract grade. Minneapolis and Duluth re ported 28 cars, making a total of cara. Thla day last year waa a holiday. Primary recelpta were 1.189,000 bushels. Bcaboard clearancea In wheat and flour equaled 4h3, 0o0 bushels. The seaboard reported SO to 12 loada taken for export. Oata ahowed even leaa animation than yesterday, prices moving only c. Weak ness in other pita and the oata corner de cision were the factora In a depression that lost for December options in the day a bualneaa. A fair demand developed on the alight breaks, thus checking a fur ther decline. Trade waa principally local and largely of a acalplng nature. Bent. IS. Some assurance waa Imparted to the market at the opening today by reason ot a Detter aemana irora London and news of the government's de cision to anticipate October Interest ,on bonds, but the list was generally dull and Inactive during the first hour. Commission houses did very little and foreign houses were moderate buyera. Money conditions were mora favorable and contrary to cus tom at the week's end. There waa a brisk demand for call money, which ruled at I per cent. Slight pressure waa directed against some Issues In the early trading, but support came later. Rumors of gold Imports were again current, but appeared to have no foundation in fact. It was clearly ahown that the rate precluded en gagements except St a loss. The keenest Interest was evinced In the bank statement, owing to the many pessimistic reports and fears of an utter wiping out of the surplus reserve. Altnougn mis item snows a ae crease of nearly 13,181.000, there re malna a balance of slightly more than 1700. oa), the result of a heavy shrinkage In the loary account. The statement proven be- rond doubt that a number of bunka are at hie 'time much below the legal reaerve re qulrement. The loaa In cash slightly over Si.ooo.iiou was about up to expectations, The market appeared to take kindly to the bank statement, and this, together with the action of secretary Shaw, brought In creased activity with improved prices to 1 number of leading stocks. Including St. Paul, Reading, Pennsylvania, New York Central. Missouri Paclllc. Illinois Central, Louisville A Nashville, Baltimore Ohio and Sugar. The cloalng was strong and ac live. The naaalnc of another week with the coal strike sliii unsettled and an advance In call money to 20 per cent, the top figure of the year, flnda the general Hat moder ated steady and miner in not a lew in stances. Financial students declare that thla rather anomalous condition Is due largely to the underrating of thla country's resources. They point to the gratifying crop reports aa a matter of fact these were lts aatufactory as to corn and cot ton at the week's end and the Increased railroad earninga in proor or their claim though apparently losing sight of the fact that the same Increases have for the most part brought with them heavy Increases In operating expenses. The event of the week waa the placing of Hi. Paul common on a 7 per cent dividend basla. this action having been advocated, It is said, by the strongeat interesta In the road. The "atreet ' attached no ordinary algnlflcance to the Increase In view of the road a es tablished reputation for conservatism, but the stock fulled to respond in thla market or abroad. Reports that Oeorge J. Gould Is to become a director In St. Paul gave wciicni to sioriea ui 01. t'aui anu Miaaour weight to xtorles of St. Faul and Missouri 1 facinc ana union racinc. 1 ne caae of Mis cine and union aourl Pacific was Interesting, that stock touching a new high record with St. Paul and both setting off proportionately. An other event was the decision of the Balti more A Ohio directors to Issue 843,6O0,dtiu new common stock, psrt of which had been authorised laat year. Impressions are cur rent that some dealing with the general railway situation In the south will soon come out, and that the settlement or the Louisville A Nashville and Southern Rail, way matter will bring benefits to tha Sea board Air and Atlantic Coast lines. (.'all money fluctuated wildly, the rate ranslng from I per cent early In the week to 15 per cent on Thursday and 20 per cent yesterday. The bank statement figures, showing a loaa of over 7.MM.u00 In early forecasts, added to yesterdsy's feeling of spprehen- sion, wun resultant oecunea. f oreign ex . change broke violently several times during 1 tne wrea, tne ruby Increasing the Droba. blllty of geld Imports, but with the excep tion of the t?.0ot.OJ0 In transit from Aus tralia no consignments were announced. The second Installment of about lll.OuO.OM on account of subscriptions to the Oregon Short L4ne participating bonda la due next week, but arrsngrments to meet thla pay ment have been, made In such a way as to cause no disturbance to the money mar ket. Buainrss during the week was largely active, with a large percentage of dealings In Wabash debenture Bs, which st one time showed a gain of over I points, re sulting from the heavy speculative pur chasing movement. The market generally waa firm, la smpathy with stock maulpu'a tlon. I'nlted Statas 8a advanced . the new 4. registered, 1 and new 4a, coupon. . The old 4s declined . as compared with ths cineing call of laat week. Tbe New York Financier says- The moat notable faul duK'Loaed, by th official glate- ment of the New York associated banks last week wa thst, though the surplus of 25 per cent of cash to deposits of all the banks. Including state and national, was not entirely wiped out. there remained a surplus reaerve of only 1715.015, the smallest since November 11, 1H99, when there was a deficiency Id the reserve of 13U,0?8. The specie decreased 16.818.500 and the legal tenders I1.230,7ti0 making the total lows of rash 17,030.103. The estimated loss based on the traceable movements of money during the week wsa 17,862,100. This decrease ot rash appears to have been wholly due to the sub-treasury opera tions, which absorbed from the banks 415,000. It Is noteworthy In this fwnnec- tlon that since the week ending August 22 the sub-treasury operations bsve resulted In a drain from the banks of 117.961.900, while the net loss to these Institutions on the Interbank movement In this Interval has been I6.149.a00 and the transfers through the sub-treasury of subsidiary coin alone has been 12.699.600, making a total of the outward movements to the country banks through transfers of I9.S58.700. or 18,303.200 less than the amount taken out of the New York banks through sub-treasury opera tions. In other words, these absorptions for four weeks hsve been nesrly 50 per cent larger than the traceable movements to the Interior. Still another striking fact Is that the losses to the banks on the Interior movement of 9.6a,7no, as above, have been offeet by 13.989.800 by receipts of new gold represented bv assay office checks against domestic and Yukon gold deposited at various points, which checks have been cashed In this city. The loans were counteracted laat week by 6,975.i0, making the contraction since August 16, I29 400.OU0. The deposits fell off H4.6L'8,9on, a decrease since August 16 of l51.600.iion. The decrease in deposits last wee wss 1711,800 greater than the amount called for by the total Ions of cash and the reduction of loans, hence the statement very nearly harmonizes. The required re serve was lessened 13,657.225 through the de creases In depojlts. which sum, deducted from tha loss of cash, leaves 13.381. 875 aa the amount of the reduction In reaerve. The surplus now stands at 1715.075, against 17,110,550 at the corresponding date s yesr ago and 130,836.175 on September 15. 1900. The circulation was Increased last weex 1702.500. making a gain since August 9 of I2.387.3f0, distributed among the larger banka. The average dally clearings of the Institutions were l-TT.um.OOO, against 1274, OOn.OfiO In the previous week. Nine of the larger banka showed a net contraction of 000.000 In loans, of which number one re duced this Item by IS.non.aV), one by 11,700.600, one py 11.300,0110 and one by si.osi.ooo. The net loss of specie by seven banks was 15.200,000, of which amount one bank loet 12.100.000. one 11,700,000 and another 11,390.000. The low reserves of the bsnks will most Ilxely Increase the monetary tension during the current weeg to such an extent as possibly to cause even higher rates for money to rule than those of last week. These high rates will, however, naturally offset foreign exchange, causing a fall to points which will permit Imports or gold from Paris and perhaps from London. In asmuch as the secretary of the treasury already has In contemplation an Increase of deposits or public funds In the banks he will most likely decide that tne time tins arrived when thla form of relief to tha situation may properly be extended The following are the closing prices on the New York Stock: exchange: Atrhlson 4 Bo. " 1 - compared with the corresponding week of last year the Increase was nearly 11.000 hud. For the year to date the increase over the same period of last year amounts to nearly 72,000 neaa. Comfed steers have been In light receipt ail the week, and up to Friday anything at all good commanded fully steady prices. On Friday, however, packers hit the mar ket In bad shape, as they claimed tbey had been paying too much for their cattle here In comparison with Chicago. Sellers made a desperate effort to hold the market tin. but on the half-fat stuff they took off In some cases right close to 50c. There were no finished cattle In the yards to make a teat of the market on that class, but the general Impression Is that cattle above 87.00 would not nave sunereu as uaaiy as ins part fat kinds. The cow market haa been In good shape all the week. The medium kinds and can- ners have held fully steady and the choicer grades, If anything, are a nine nigner. Rerelnta have not Included any great num ber of cows, and as a result the demand has been sufficient to take all that was offered The stocker and feeder market has been heavily supplied sll the week, and in spite of the liberal demand from the country the market has essed off a little on all but the very best. The general run of cattle are nrobably 10fi20c lower, while the choice cattle are steady to a dime lower. The rhelce heavy dehorned cattle are still sell Ing at the highest prices, but dealers look for the demand for that class to decrease aa It Is getting to the time when feeders want cattle for a long feed, and then the 800 to 1.000-pou.id cattle will sell to good advantage. At the cloae of the week there are very few cattle of any kind left in the yards, and. considering the heavy receipts, tha sutmiv has been cleaned up remarkably cloae. There were about 76 cars shipped to the country yesterday. . Western beef steers have been rather scarce all the week, and aa a result prices have held up In good snaps and the week cloeed a little stronger than tha cloae of last week. Each days offerlnga met with ready aale. but choice grades wers scarce. Western feeders are a little lower except In the case of something choice. The more desirable grades are steady to a dime lower and the general run of rattle Ka30e lower. It now takes something fsncy to bring over 85 00, while the bulk Is selling from 34.00 to 84.40. Range cows are steady to atrong (or the week and the choice grades are. If anything, a little higher. As high aa 64 40 haa been paid this week and tne bulk sells (rnm 33 00 to 13.75 HOGS There was only a light run of hogs hare todsy snd under the Influence of b good local demand the msrket opened strong to a nickel nigner man yesieraa on the aood han. For the weeK. nowever. he cuonlv haja been very liberal, a good gain having been made over the last sev- ral weeks snd also over the correHnonoiiig week of last year. The market, though, has held up In good shape and prices on heeo are fullv as high as they were at the close of Isst week.
