At the opening today the stock market reflected little of yeaterday's reactionary tendency, though the undertone waa somewhat heavy in view of the unstable money mark't und lower prices from London. St. Paul came Into early prominence and with Missouri Pacific divided the day's honors, renewing rumors of a cloaed working agreement be tween those two lines.- On Tractions ex ceeding 6o,000 shares St. Paul, while closing somewhat below tha beat, made a net gain of almost 3 points, while Missouri Pacific, which was much more active, gained 14 The Southwestern stocks, especially those In the Gould system, mnde sume recovery on the growing belief that the government crop reports would prove somewhat exag gerated. Norfolk & Western s strenmh was due to favorable forecasts regarding the annual report and Pennsylvania s gain, which was not long maintained, was at tributed to the collapse of the tunnel fran chise opposition. The comparative inac tivity of Reading common, which wai heavy throughout, resulted. It was believed, from the report that the contest for control had been settled. The early session brought gains to a num ber of Industrials, Including Virginia Chen- leal, cotton oil, people s uas ana ucntoss Sheffleld Steel, but with the exception of Gas and the Chemical Isauea these Im provements did not hold. Manhattan vns the feature of the transactions, though Its gain on ihe day was only fractional. Irreg ularity followed another squeese In call monev. which worked nominally as high as 10 Der cent, but actually not higher than 84. and fell off as low as 34. Much of the afternoon's business was In the Industrials, notably Colorado Fuel, People's Gas, Leather issues and the independent steel and iron companies, all of which closed with net gains. Tn the last hour there was a general recovery to above the previous day's final prices. The aubtreasury's debit balance at the clearing houae of over $1,000. 000 was chiefly due to heavy payments for the navy and $250,000 for account of Klon dike gold. Tomorrow's bank statement will, It Is be lieved, show a further loss or surplus re serves, but Is not expected to reflect in full the $6,000,0(10 lost to the subtreasury and the Interior by local Institutions. The market opened firm, 1 points lower on September snd 2ff6 points higher on later options, this being In keeping with rather better Liverpool cables than anticipated and on further bullish crop reports from Georgia, Alabama and Texas. At the higher prices profit-taking set In through the commis sion house channels and the bears thought they saw evidence of liquidation by the Wall street bull clique. A quick drive at the fall months led to a general decline In prices. January worked off to 8.44c. At this level the bull syndicate flooded the market with buying orders, despite reports of good rains where needed in Georgia snd the central belt of Texas. The shorts be came alarmed and for the next two hours or more the tendency was steadily upward. Tha January option advanced to 8.44c snd other months went up accordingly, but Europe, through and the public In general were slow to come out boldly on the buying side. The "Inalght" statement of Superin tendent King was something of a surprise, In that It gave 136.OU0 bales as against 75.000 a year ago, but for the time bflng did not affect the market. Then came the visible supply figures showing a loss for the world of 84.000 bales against a loss the same time last year of 104.000 bales. The American visible supply Is said to have Increased $.000 bales, whereas the same week Inst year there ' was a decrease of 5S,ooO bales. These figures led to heavy realising, under which orlces broke badly. January to 8.40c The market finally was steady and net 4(&7 points lower. ST. LOCIS. Sept. . The same as baa been the case all the week, a good teat of the corn fed steer market was not made, but the aaner.l opinion is that desirable grades would bring strong prices as compared with the quotations 'n force a week ago. Packers are not getting near enough corn cattle to go with their westerns and aa a result they are ail anxious for good corn cattle. The cow market was active and strong this morning and the few bunches that were in the yards soon chart od hands Tha market has been In good shape all the week ana prices are a utile nigber. The kinds that have shown the most Improvement are those that a week ago were selllna around $2.90 and $3.00. The atrlctly good cows have been firm all the week and ready sellers. Canners have not shown much change! but still there haa been no difficulty ex perienced to dispose of them at aood. steady prices. nulla, veai caives ana stags bald fully steady today. Blockers and feeders were rather scares today and as there were about 140 cars shipped to the country yesterday there was r.ot mucn cnange in prices today, even though It la the last of the week. Tha good stuff waa certainly steady, with tha com moner grades dull. The few western rsnge beef steers that were offered sold at good, strong prices this morning and the market la a 11, ,1. higher than it was a week ago. On Monday snd Tuesaay prices eaaea off a little, but since that time the tendency has been up ward and anything at all dealrable Is right ground lOlac higher for the week. De sirable feeders are also strong for the week and Blockers of good quality in particular are selling to better advantage than they did a week ago. Common stuff of all weights, though. Is neglected.
