CHICAGO, Aug. 28.-Brlrht weather gen
erally was the tiearish lautor In grains to
day. All cereals Buttered recession at the
tart, and tree liquidation by longs and
tor sometime hears had tree rein. Later
there was something of natural reaction,
especially In oats. Tne close, however, was
weak In Ihe main, September wheat 'Afrjle
down, September corn lc lower and Bt p
itember oats o higher, September provis
ions closed loo to iUHc depressed.
Wheat ruled weak and was active only
In spots. . With lower cables and weather
the best that could be desired there was
a good amount of long wiling early and
jrl:e took a quick tumble. There was
constant talk ot a big movement of spring
wheat soon and good prospects for a little
better grading. Active threshing of new
wheat whs reported under way. Follow
ing weeks of adverse weather, the sun
shine turned all the crowd to the bearish
view and stop loss selling orders came out.
After the break, however, there was good
buying at times. September felt the most
train, because of poor support. Late cash
'business was fair and the seaboard re
ported thirty-eight loads taken for export,
Jn general the aspect of the wheat market
Indicated that the big longs wanted to ret
out of the market before it found a lower
level, and the support was largely by those
iwho . covered for a profit. September
started foe to c lower at 70c to V'rtfec,
dipped to HBc and then fluctuated very nar
rowly and closed Vi&c lower at 6BV(t'"c.
Local receipts were i.9 care, 8 of con
tract grade. Minneapolis and Duluth re-
fiorted 214 cars, making a total for the
hree points of 6;5 cars, against 6tiu last
Week and 798 a year ago. rrimary receipt
were 8!,0ti0 bufhels, against 1,423 bUMhels
isv year ago. Seaboard clearances in wheat
and flour equaled 6O4,00i bushels.
Corn felt the effects of fine weather,
lower cables and reports of freer offerings.
.Receipts were still light at 29 cars, 1 of
contract grade, but promises were for a
much better showing. Th crowd turned
'.uniformly bearish at the opening, and cur
ing the slump September was at one time
2c depressed. Almost everyone In the pit
had stuff for sale. In general the specu
lators In this pit thought manipulation In
September was at an end, but a latent fear
'that such might 'prove the case held this
option somewhat nervous and subject to
quick fluctuations and any definite news.
Kansas City sent out conflicting reports to
the effect that plenty of corn would be of
fered there within fifteen days, but that
new corn would not grade there until Oc
tober 13. There was no doubt, however,
that there was selling; pressure on the
southwestern markets because of news of
new offerings. September sold from 67o tq
WAaAn the first few minutes of trade, but
rallied to blc on fairly good covering.
I.ate fluctuations were narow and Septern
, ber closed weak, lfoc lower, at 5ffldo.
' Oats had the best strength of grains and
ruled strong after an early dip. The open
ing break was In sympathy with the other
f rains and on fine weather. Excellent buy
ng by cereal concerns, however, put a
Arm tone In the pit. Shorts covered and
prices reacted sharply. September sold
'from fti!e, to Xifoc early, advanced to 83c
and closed firm. Ho up, at 33o. Receipt
'Were liberal at 263 cars.
Weakness lu the hog and grain markets
worked against provisions. Karly in the
' day there- was an effort on the- part of
'packers to support the market, but free
.'offerings resulted from the general besr
Ish sentiment on the floor and there wero
Isnnrked alumna all alnnr the line. Hentem-
