FARNSWORTIl ENDS PARKER
Grand Island "Brownie" Dft Strong
Man Through Bettor Tennis.
ANOTHER SENSATION AT FIELD CLUB
Prospective Winner of Interstate
Toaraey Is Pat Oat of Play
by Skill of a Yoanger
Antagonist.
Earl Farnsworth, tba diminutive tennla
champion of Nebraska, took the wind from
tha saila of W. G. Parker ot Arfcatntaa City,
Kan., at the Field club courts Wednesday
evening in the flerceat bout yet seen at
the Interstate tournament. Against odds of
age, experience, atrength, reach and form
"The Brownie" from Orand Island took tb.4
first and third aeta from the man who once
defeated Larned, and who In '94 waa ranked
number 8 among tha tennla player ot Am
erica. Farnsworth won (-4, 4-8, 6-2.
' The result waa a decided reversal of pop
ular opinion and general expectation.
Parker had been ao persistently touted, and
showed such a strong game In tba matches
be had played, that not even Farmworth's
close friend believed bo could win. But
they did not realize bow much the little
fellow has Improved bla game this season.
Meanwhile, despite the feeling that he
had no chance, Farnsworth waa ao much
tha favorite that the largo gallery which
witnessed the match went into regular col
legiate exhibition of Joy when the last
point ii won. Faroworth himself Im
mediately went up on shoulder, and he baa
hardly had a chance lo walk since. A
pretty undergraduate la said to have fav
ored "Tha Brownie." She la a sophomore
at the University of Nebraska and attended
the match with a bevy of her sorority
friends. When Farnsworth finally pulled
out tba victory what those girls did not do
to the undergraduate wa not worth while.
The pushing, pulling, slapping and general
trouncing that waa doled out to her waa
something fierce. The enthusiasm con
tinued all tha evening, and the dance later,
which waa attended by a great crush, wa
moatly an ovation to Farniworth.
Play of tha Morning,
Four matches In the first round of the
doubles and two in tb Brat round of the
consolation ainglea were played off at the
Field club yesterday morning before the rain
interfered. Tba contest in double proved
extremely Interesting, aa three of the
atrongeat teams in tha competition were
out. Another feature waa the fact that
some of the teams were raw, that la, the
partners bad never before played together.
In ona caae, at least, this blind matching
proved a great eucceaa, aa Jerome McOea
and Dr. Sheldon aeemed to fit In together
Ilka a Job of dovetailing, and they played
a very clever match under all the clrcum
Btancea agalnat .Young and Caldwell ot
Omaha, whom they defeated 8-2, 6-2.
This waa the principal conteat of tbe
morning from a local atandpolnt, aa Young
and Caldwell comprise tha best Omaha
team. Their play waa very unfortunate,
however. Caldwell, who ba been ahuwiug
such grand tennla all week, waa off color
for tbe flrat time. He waa not on bla atroke
at all, the clever Lawfords and paaiea that
bave been winning bis matchea in tbe sin
gle not being apparent. Add to tbta tba
fact that Young waa clear off bis game and
you bava tbe explanation ot their eaay de
feat. McGee and Sheldon, . meanwhile.
showed up remarkably well. McOee bad
more control than he baa. shown at any pre
vious time during the tournament. Tha two
won chiefly on their team work, which waa
very good considering the lack of familiarity
of each with tha other's game. Then they
smashed aa well at the, net and their lob
bing waa good.
Iowana Play Desperately.
Sanderson and Holland, tha Galeaburg
palp, found in Gtlman and McNeal ot Bloux
City a difficult proposition after tha flrat set.
Tbey went to tha Illinois team (-0, tbe
Iowana being unable to get started at all.
They were good tennla playera, however, and
in tha aecond act they picked up. It waa
hard fougbt to deuce, and then Sanderson
and Holland took the next two games, win
nlng tbe set and match. Tha vlctora played
the net more, and were on the whole safer
The Hawkeyea lobbed well, but lcat many
points trying to paaa. Holland and Sander
aon played a better game the Brat aet, aa
tbey let down considerably in the aeeond.
and gavo away a good many potnta by care-
lei work.
Ashcraft and Peter, tba Chicago team
won from Howell and Hllea of Sioux City
6-8, 8-8. The match waa not a walkaway
but tbe Windy City men were superior all
the way through. Ashcraft reprodurea in
doublea tbe snappy game he playa in ainglea,
and Petera haa alao tbe characterise of
qulckneaa and apeed. The two took tha net
moat of the time, and thla waa too much
for tba Iowana.
W. O. Parker appeared in doublea with
bla partner. Carter Wilder. The latter waa
in great fqrm, and with Parker playing
rather easily and a little loosely, tbey won
from Hill and Croakey 6-4, 6-0. Parker put
no Bteam at all into hla aerv thla morning
and played easily generally. Ha waa ap
parently aavlog himself for tba match with
Farnsworth in ainglea, acheduled for tba
afternoon. Wilder showed htmeelt to be
a good all around player, with good knowl
edge of tha game. In the flrct aet Hill and
Croskey paaaed their opponent fight and
left and took four gamea from them. It
looked Ilka a fight, but in the aeoond aet
Parker and Wilder took thlnga aa they
wlabad.
Graves and Cockerlll atarted their match
against Hopklna and Towl, but tb rain
atopped it after on set.
Loveland and Shepherd, tb two Lincoln
men, were at tba club and played little
practice at noon to find tbe grounds. But
they did not play their firat round match
They form a team that will ba watched.
It, with Sanderaon and Holland, Sheldon
and McGee, Parker and Wilder and Faroe
worth and Raymond, would eem to ba tb
five atrnng teams of the tournament, with
llttl choice ao far. S
Chamnlonahlo double, flrat round:

were played. Howell beat Copeland two
! aeta; -0 g-0. The Bloux City man
allowed himself atronger la all department
of tha game. Copeland played hardly as
well aa he did against McGee Monday.
Then Cary of North Platte beat Proaett
of Fullertoa. Thla waa a long draw:
match, going 1-9, 6-0, 6-6. Prouait took tb
firat set after atxteen game. Then he
aeemed to let down, aa Cary took tha next
two In love aeta.
Consolation ainglea, flrat round:
Howell beat Copeland. 6-0, 0-0.
Cary bent Prouett, 7-8. 6-0. 6-0.
Delayed by the Plain.
Tba rain wet tha courta down o that
they could not be stepped on till near 6
o'clock. But about then tha committee de
termined tbat It did not wish to disappoint
the hundreds ot people wbo had come to
tee the tennla, and announced that the
Parker-Farniwortb match ot tba four
scheduled would bo played. Thla was tba
one which most everyone wished to wit
ness. Play commenced at 6 o'clock, with Earl
aervlng from tha( south end ot th last
court to the west, which Glbb had raked
and roiled into good condition. Farus
worth loat the firat game, but won tha
next three atraight. Then ha loat the fifth,
won tba alxth, loat tbe aeventh and eighth
and won the ninth and tenth, making the
aet. On tha whole lobbing won tha aet
for Earl, although his quickness at the net
waa very effective. Parker tried bard to
get the net, but Earl would lob him to
the back court repeatedly. On the ex
changee of drives it waa impossible for
Farker to get them too fast or too Speedy
for Farnsworth, wbo showed great apeed
himself. Parker waa in hla uaual great
style, but waa ao far somewhat uncertain
and lobbed outside a good deal. Earl's
lobbing waa perfect through the aet. There
were bitter ralllea over practically every
point and each man made thrilling re
turns. The aecond aet found Farnsworth eerv-
ng from the north. He took the first
game, lost the aecond, took the third,
fourth and fifth, having bla man 4-1 at
that point. The spectators bad hardly re
covered from the shock of seeing Parker
lose tb tint aet, but now they conceded
Farnsworth the match in atralght set.
Meanwhile Parker waa growing t roarer
nd better every game, and t S i ba
tepped in and took five atraighi gamea
by a grand rally, winning tba set, 6-4. Tb
reversal waa great tennis, and it was
thought Earl waa tiring under the terrible
pounding Parker waa giving tha balls,
in the latter part of tb aet "Tha Brown
ie's" speed leasened by halt. Earl'a lob
bing alao became weak at that time.
Yonnsrster Is Too Strong;.
Parker insisted on a seven minutes' rest
before tbe third set against Farnsworth'a
protest The aet opened with Earl aerv
lng from tha south. 'Ha lost tba first
game and they changed aldea. Farniworth
took the next two, ona at love. Then tbey
changed ends again and Earl loat one and
then won four atralght. Till that last aet
Parker had been growing steadily stronger,
bat the constant ehaaa ba bad been led
began to tell finally and he began letting
Earl's places go without trying for them.
All the way through tha match Parker bit
tbe net often and went out at enda and
aldea too much. Earl played extremely
aafe, even losing soma points by refrain
ing from amashea when at tba net, where
ba could bave made them win. At all
times, save during tha latter part of the
aecond set, he played from hla head In
great shape, his lobbing being beautiful
and bla placing constant. Hla waa a plug
gtng game, for all It brilliancy, and tbat
won. Tba polnta of the different gamea

of tba tournament. The queatlon now
arises, can Farnsworth beat Sanderson. It
will be a great conteat ahould they come

both play aafe tennis. But Sanderaon baa
still to beat Raymond and Shelden before
