One of th moat noteworthy- cbangea in
the grocery market during the week under
review la the advance on both green and
roaated coffee. For ome time paat the
Coffee market hae been decidedly unlater
es'lng, but last week it took on consider
able mors activity and green stock ad

vanced their line feo per pound. At the
Close ot the week the market could be
quoted as actlvs and strong.
The sugar market Is In very muoh tha

Owing to th heavy export demand of
teat week, ae Well a liberal buying at

Wan market, however, went off ao per

There has not been much of any change
tn the canned goods market with the ex

More encouraging reports bave been re

still-higher tendency. It will be two months
before the large supply of Japan rices
will arrive.

Dry Goods Market Tory Active).
Fall trade with local dry goods Jobbers is
now In full swing. A good many buyers
arrived last week and indications are fa
vorable for still mors this coming week.
It Is of course rather early for fall buyer,
but rtlll there seems to b a tendency en
tha part of retailers ta get their stock
on hand so as to exhibit them to th trade.
The order that have been placed BO far
bavs been mur.h larger than usual, which
leads wholesaler to the conclusion that
thy are not only going to have many new
customers this year, but that their order
wtll average up niuch larger than last year.
Th filling of advance order is still
programing at a rapid rate and Immense
Stocks of blankets, dress goods, underwear,
holwry and duck goods are going out.
Thar Is not much, to be said thl week
of the condition of the market, fur what
has been reported in the past of the firm
condition of the market and the scarcity
cf many desirable lines still holds true.
Those woo are in a position to know think
that later on there will be considerable
difficulty to get some of the more popular
firadee and for that reason they are advls
ug their fruands to buy liberally now.

CHICAGO, Aug. .-Calamlt overtook
th bull In the provision pit today. Th
downhill courae of all grains during th
week, and especially the precipitous de
cline In corn had taken all faith from hold
ers in ail the speculative pits. As further
argument against the bulls, corn broke
axa!n early In the day. Thl w too much,
for the provision crowd and an avalanche
of atuploR selling orders swamped th
pit. ' Pork mau the greatest break SOe
but other products kept company. While a
stampede was working haou In provisions
th grain crowd came to the belief that
bottom prices had been reached. Cover
ing on a tremendous scale took place. Corn
aborts covered by the million. The bear
ish condition of Weather and fine crop
worked against a rally, but In the end
everything on the floor reacted. September
corn closed toWc up, September wheat a

Provisions were demoralized until 1st
In the session. There tin great selling
preaaure In the shape of liquidation In Sep
tember holdings and felling short of Janu
ary and May. Pork wa the product raided
and the bottom dropped out of the market.
Kverybody wa offering fctufT. At time
January pork was ottered 20c under the
market, with no takers. The bottom wa
reached at a decline of about (Wc. Lard
had ben firmest of the product and turned
strong on support. Th hog market, which
had been lower on only ,Cm) head receipts,
turned up late, with a view to attracting
more atock to market next week. Corn,
the. weaknes of which wa the primary In
fluence In the provision selling, turned
firm. After the revere break there was a
reactive tendency and the day's louses were
much lee then at on time seemed prob
able. September pork sold from 1.66 down
to 116.71, and cloned weak- and 16c off at
I1S.S6; January sold from SU S to S13.S0, and
closd at tit. 60; September lard sold as tow

September ribs dropped from S10.W to $S.tw,
aud closed 12V,o off at Uo.lUVfr.
Corn was so wesk early that It caused
weakness in everything els on the floor.
After slumping 7c In one week, an ad
ditional declln In deferred future ef lo
frightened the few remaining bulla Into
renewed liquidation. The weather was
favorable and crop reports were bearish,
Texas was asking for bids for corn for
Immediate shipment. Altogether, it ap
peared that soon there would be a big
movement from the aoulhweet. The de
cline, however, soon brought prices to a
pot which wa considered too profitable to
the ehort to last long. Covering had been
going on all morning, but now grew lively.
The clique that had sold September short

Week, with mora of a pronounced tendency
to lower values, and this tn the face of an

see any betterment in prices unless we get

CATTLS There were ne cattle on aals
today, but for the week recelpte are con
siderably in excess of last week and also
of the corresponding week of last year.
The market on desirable grades has been In
good shape all the week, but the common
kinds bave been neglected, with the ten
dency of prices downward.
Thera bave been very few cornfed on
sal this week, and a th demand on th
part of packers was In good shepe the
better grade, uch as sell from ii.lt up,
bav been strong, but th half-fat kind
that sell from 86.78 down are a little lower.
There have been no cholee cattle offered
though that would sell from $7.75 to $8 85,
but It Is thought that finished cattle would
sell here te good advantage. I
The cow market broke In rather bad
shape the first of the week, and on Tues
day wa a good quarter lower. Slnoe that
time, however, th feeling has beea a little
better, and the market for the week is
only about 164226 lower. That applies to
both natives and cornfed.
Bologna bulla are, it anything, a little
lower than they were a week ago, and are
selling mostly from $2.60 to 82.00. Feeder
bulls have held about steady and have sold
around $2.00 and S3.2S. Good packer bulla
may also be quoted steady, bi". vary few
ar coming. Veal ealve and stags have
cot shown much of any change.
. There ha bean un actlv demand ail th
week for heavy dehorned feeder of good
quality and flesh. A high a 86.93 wa
paid on Thursday for a bunch of weat
ern that averaged 1.218 pound, but they
were good. That was the high prloe of the
eaaon. and also th hlgheat price on reo
ord st thl market for wee tern feeder.
Prime dehorned yeerlings hav also held
steady, but common stuff of all ages end
weight 1 a little lower.' Horned cattle
sell from 20o to 80o lower than dehorned
cattle.
Western rang beef steers that were good
enough to sell from Ss.oo to Ve.ie have been
eirong all the week and may be quoted
a little higher. The kinds, tough, that
sell from $6.00 down are a little lower.
Range cows are 1625c lower, and desir
able feeders are stronger, while common,
kind are alow and lower.
HOGS There wa a light run of hog
here today, but In spite of that faot th
market continued on It downward course.
On the (tart It wa weak to a nickel lower
than yesterday' average, but later on It
looked a though there were not going lo
be enough to meet the local demand, and a
a result th market firmed up and wa
bout steady with yesUKay' general mar
ket. Toward the close, however, the feel
ing became weaker again, and th tat
hog sold about like tha first ones. The
long string went t $7.16, and th good hogs
sold from that figure up to $7.26. The com
mon grades Bold from $7.16 down to $7.09.
Tne supply of hog for the week has been
heavier tnan for laat week, but as coin
pared with the eame week of laat year
there la a bis decrease. The market has
moved steadily downward since Monday
with the exception of Wednesday, when
there was a slight resctlon, and th de
cline for the week amount to a llttl ever

of fat wether held over from yesterday
also (old at a steady price.
lor the week receipts have shown a bis
lrcres over the corresponding week of
laat year, but oompsred with Inst week
there la a decrease. The first part of the
week the msrket was rather quiet, wlih
price lower, and at one time wa safely
a quarter lower. Th feeling Improved,
however, toward the close, bo that aa
compared with last week the market In a
gcod many cases la not over pVilbc lower,
while In other Instance II 1 lUniic lower.
Handy weight stuff ha sold to the best ad
vantage, while heavy sheep have been
rather neglected and have declined the
most. The decline la Jut about th sams
on both sheep and lamb.
There ha been a trong demnd all the
week for feeders and the market ha held
