Last Kvealagt.
Another delightful evening favored the
city tennia tournament yesterday and ths
conteat for the local, championship In
doubles was carried on stage nearer to
completion. Except for an unfinished match,
only the float round remain for this aft
ernoon, when Young and Caldwell will
meet either Hill and Collett or Battln and
Towl.
F. J. Hill and A. Collett' after finishing
their postponed tie with J. Hughes and Dr.
Schneider, went np against J. W. Battln and
J. W. Towl and by a elngnlar coincidence
had again reached the score of "one set all"
when darkness cam on. The score by
games waa th same as on ths previous
evening, except that Hill and Collett took
th first Set Instead of th second, i
Hughea and Schneider wr not as suc
cessful last night as they bad been on
Thursday. Neither of them showed the
energy and determination which had gained
them th first act ot th match and cam
hear winning tbera a' second. They al
lowed their opponents to get a good lead
on them before they warmed up to the
game and almost before anyone knew what
waa going on the score' was 8 to 1 tn favor
of Hill and Collett: Collett wis showing
much agility on th back Un and Hill
mad aome winning atrokea at tb net,
while th other team merely returned th
ball a they cam to them without any
serious effort to score. '
Strong; Match ef Toaraey.
Battln and Towle, who had already
knocked out Mclntyr and Haskell and also
Sunderland and Dufrene, were expected to
make at least a strong fight against Hill
and Collett. and they are certainly doing
It It was only after two most strenuous
seta that th match wa postponed. Hill
and Collett captured the first at 7 to 6, by
hard work. Hilt waa very auccessful with
his service, and at th net he found plenty
of easy balls, which he volleyed with just
enough plsclng to make, them difficult to
reach. When playing a forward game Hill
stands very close to -the net, sometimes
rather too close, and arvthtng that comes
at him 'two cr three feet above th aet
band I an Invitation for a killing; volley,
whether by speed or direction, which he
seldom' failed to avail himself of. Battln,
from his has line, usually tried to lob eTer
Hill, and then , Collett . had a chance to
thine, . and It waa wonderful . bow much
ground ho could cover In chasing th balla
at the back of th court. Collett'a re
turns were usually simple aud easy to play,
but Hill found him a aseful partner In that
he saved many a point which would other
wise hav gone against them.
Battln did most of th work on bU aide
of th net. Aa a general, he made the most
S chance. Hi direction to his
partner to leave . a ball .that was going
out, or to run for a ball which was falling
Inside th line, were frequently th means
of saving a point, and jthe match waa on
la which every point was valuable. . Battln
was not so successful .aa usual -wlh his
sideline drives, or perhaps it should rather
be said b bad fewer opportunities for such
plays. If be bad been able , to get some
fast low balis down the . aid of tb court
It I doubtful whether Hill' network would
have; counted for' sci much. ..Towl sup
ported his partner with.. fame rather clever
volleying, but he foud,lt difficult to get the
balla away from HU1 .at.. the net and. did
not seem to. have the,, aame chances for
brilliant .play that he, has had, in former
matches. iC , , -,:-.r. : ,-; ,-.w. '
"? i Another Good Matcb. -
Young and Caldwell tad hy no means an
easy time of It with Browa and Rogers,
though th ecore ot 8-4. 8-1 doe not in
dicate anything very close.' Th losers bad
th games 4 to 1 in their favor In th first
set and were putting many balls down the
center of th court, where neither Young
nor Caldwell was "able to reach them.
They both hit th ball with considerable
skill and .there were many pretty passea
to and fro. Although outclaased, they
mad a good stand. . . - v
Second round:
F. J. Hill and A. Collett beat J. Hughe
and Dr. Schneider. 6-7, 0-3.
Semi-final round:
C. H. Ydung and 8. S. Caldwell beat J. fl.
Brown and Herbert Rogers, 0-4, -t.
F. J. Hill and A. Coiiett against J. W.
Battln and J. W. Towle, f-6. 8-8. (Un
finished.) Isaae Raymond, the Lincoln boy who will
be Earl Farnaworth'a partner In th inter
state tournament on the 18th, was on tb
Field club courts yesterday,' and took part
In a practice gam. 'His fast style of play
attracted considerable attention. Raymond
says that Loveland and Shepherd, another
Lincoln pair who hav entered their name
for the Interstate, are in constant prac
tic and will glvs a good account of them
selves, i
' Among th spectator of tb matches ot
this week and last there has been consid
erable comment over . the csrelestnsss ot
the playera in the matter ot foot fault.
It seem as it many of them did not know
the rule which declares that both fset
shall be behind the line when serving.
Everyone knows how easy It Is to encroach
a few Inches beyond the limit, but It la an
unfair advantage which ought to be guarded
against carefully. It is a matter la which
member of the Omaha club can set a good
example to th visiters, who will be her
the week after next If they will watch
themselves. " '

WORCE8TER, Mass., Aug. 8-fnder th
most perfect conditions the first day's rac
ing In the thirtieth snnual regatta of the
National Association of Amateur Oaramcn
wa held at Lake Vldlnalgamond this after
noon. Never before has such a crowd wit
nessed the championship. Each of the
race decided waa at a mile and a half,
wlt,h a turn, except the eight shell, which
was rowed straightaway, one mile and a
half, less sixty yards. Six final were dis
posed of In the entire Hat of twelve events.
Heats In the Intermediate singles proved
four triers for final heat tomorrow, those
who qualified being Ernest George of
Boston, a Harvard boy: H. H. Crowley of
Wschusette, B. C; W. B. West of the
Philadelphia Boat club and E. F. Rlvenua
of the Philadelphia Barge club.
New York snd Philadelphia were tied so
fsr in the matter ot firsts, with two each.
New York scored In the Intermediate pslre
with the Harlema, and senior double with
the first Bohemians, The Quakers un
covered winning crew In the senior pairs
with the Vespers and in the Intermediate
eights with the Pennsylvania Barge club.
The other first places were annexed by the
Ariel ot Baltimore In tbe intermediate
four event and th senior fours by the
Winnipeg.
Probably the prettiest rape of the day
ensued when the Intermediate eight Shell
race was under way. Six crews' started In
the single heat and furnished a most pic
turesque contest. So close were the half
dosen boats at the half-way mark that it
waa nearly Impossible to pick the leader.
The pace at this stage cuused half 'he
sextette to slow up and allowed the Fair
mount Barge club and WachuseMe club to
have the finish to themselves. The Penn
sylvania Barge club pulled In grsnd style
and crossed the line a length to the good.
For the second plaee there wss a battle
royal between the Fairmounts and Wachu
aettes, the latter being beaten on the line.
The time, according to experts, was re
markably fast .
The Winnipeg gsve their opponents a
taste of their calibre In the senior fours.
Opposed by the famous Vespers and the
Clifton Boat club crew ot Btaten Island,
trained by Fred Plalsted. they lost little
time In making for the lead, which they
assumed directly after they had rowed 300
yard. At the turn they were nearly two
lengths in front and when straightened
out for home three lengths of open water
separated their boat from the Vespers,
who wer second. The crews finished In
this order, with the CUftons twenty lengths
further back.
New York scullers hsd a race to them
selves In the Intermediate pair shells. The
Harlems, Nonpareils and Lone Stars turned
out, and finished In that order, althcag'.i
judges Nit the turn say the "Nons" were
beaten because of a poor turn around the
stake. The Lone Stars were besten off In
the second heat of the Intermediate singles.
rtivenus or Philadelphia lowed a grand
race. He waa bung at his stake and fully
twenty-five lengths behind the leader when
he finally got away for' the horn dash.
Clark of Boston was twenty lengths ahead
of him at the time, but so gamely did
Rlvenua struggle that he just nosed Clark
out at the line, being beaten two lengths
by Crowley.
