JEW YORK STOCKS AND , BONDS,
Market Is Listless sfnd Holder! are
Inetlned in Carry stork.
NNEW TORK. Aug. . Today's stock mar
ket continued to demonstrate In a negative
way the underlying strength, of the finan
cial and buHlness situation In the country.
Trading was mostly Idle. The few stocks
which were strong did not make an Im-
firesaive showing and did not alter the llat
es tone of the market In general. But it
is clear that there Is no eagerneaa to sell
stocks, with no buyers on a large scale
In view holders show themaelves content
to carry stocks and wait for a more active
demand. The very-idleness of the market
Is a reassuring fact. Overextension of
credits In speculative ventures Is the one
factor that threatened bad consequences.
Now there seema to be a common agree
ment to await the satisfaction of the com
ing requirements of the country for mov
ing the crops. Ail authorities are agreed
that this requirement will be unusuatty
larjre thla year.
Today'a small export of gold was obvi
ously a mercantile transaction, and It was
broadly Intimated that something equiva
lent to a premium was paid by those who
are to get It. The nearer approach cf tha
Setiod of safety for the year'e crop con
rma tho confidence In their abundance.
With plentiful harvests and a large Bur
plus of our products for export any anx
iety over the liquidation of our floating
foreign Indebtedness without" embarrass
ment la quoted. The decision of the Stock
exchange to close on Saturday for no other
cause than the coronation of the king of
England Is testimony to the general sk
quiescence In the present dullness of the
!.mi!B au wcuricies.
A demand for the Oould southwestern
waa the most conspicuous feature of the
day's trading. The heavy buying of Texas
Pacific waa by tho same brokers who
have been active In Missouri Pacific for
acme time past, and the response of other
roads.ln the group waa purely sympathetic.
The operations were supposed to be for ac
count of the same pool which has fol
lowed the upward movement In the stocks
frem. the start.
Hocking Coal mad a Jump on Inspired
Intimations that large new Interests were
to enter the property and expand Its field
of activity. Hocking Valley waa bought on
the advantage the bituminous coal .trade
In enloylng from tho paralysis of tha an
thracite trade.
The movement in Sugar waa character
Etlc of that stock Inji period cf dullness
In the" general market and was ascribed to
the prospect of an active season la the
fnilt-cannlng trade.
The only stock which seemed to be di
rectly affected by the excellent corn croo
reports was Atchison, 0f which tho ab
sorption was very large.
There were a number of minor stocks to
show strength. Brooklyn Transit was
heavy on the poor report of earnings for
year.Kt- Loui" sn Francisco
reflected some disappointment over the de
ferred announcement of the details of Its
acquirements. The express stocks made

C.l'TLEJ There was a big decrease to
day as compared with yesterday In the
number ot cattle on sale, but for the first
half of this week there Is a big increase
both over the same days of last week and
also of last year. The local demand was
In good shape, so that the market was a
little better all around on desirable grades.
The same aa yesterday there were only a
few cornfed cattle in the yards and none
that were strictly choice. Packers, how
ever, seemed to have quite liberal orders
and as a result sellers had no difficulty in
disposing of anything at all desirable at
prices that looked a little stronger. Th
common stun, tbougn, waa about steady.
The cow market was also In better shape
than it was yesterday. There were only
about 80 or 3b oars on sale- and packers
took hold in good sh&pe and the better
grades could be quoted strong. The kinds
that sell from $3.00 down, though, did not
show much ot any change.
Bulla, veal ooioer-, and stags could also
be quoted fully steady.
There waa about the usual proportion of
tockers and feeders on sale and the de
mand was fully equal to the occasion.
Heavyweight feeders of good fleBh and
quality rs well as prime yearlings contin
ued In the best demand and such kinds
could safely be quoted stronger and In
seme oases sales were made that looked
higher. The common stuff, though, was
druggy, the same as usual. '
Western range cattle again made up the
bulk of the receipts and the better grades
of steers sold .to packers at steady to
strong prices. Cows were also a little
stronger where the quality waa at all good.
The same was true ot Blockers and feeders
As trading waa quite active from start to
finish the bulk ot everything in the yards
wss disposed of In good season. Repre
sentative sales:

HOOS There waa a fate mlmA .-,,. .1
hog here today, but under the Influence
of a good local demand and favorable re
ports from other points the market was
quite active and a little stronger. . Packers
of course started In rather bearish, but
they failed to get the hoas and so had to
raise their bids. The quality of the offer
ings was considerably better today than
It wss yesterday, which makes the market,
on, paper, look quite little higher, but,
taking quality Into consideration, the
market Is simply steady to strong.
The bulk of the hogs sold from $7.$2H to
37.37H, with the long string at $7.86. The
b1,.t,er Frd sold from $7.36 up to $7.60,
while the commoner kinds went from $7.85
down. There wa very little change in the
market after buyers and sellers got down
to a trading basis and everything waa dis
posed of in good season. Representative

BIIEEP-There wss another liberal run of
sheep and lambs here today, which makes
the supply for the first - three days this
week nearly as heavy as for the same days
of last wyeek and far In excess of the ssme
days of last year. As a general thing
there was not much change from yester
day in the -prices paid, but. if anything.
me nanay weignts ot good quality were a
ume nrmer, wniie me heavyweights were
dull and weak. That applied to both sheep
and lamb. Trading was talrly active , on
the desirable kinds, but slow on the others.
The bulk of the stuff waa not of particu
larly good quality, which of course had a
bad e fleet upon the market.
The demand for feeders continued liberal
and as a result the prices paid were fully
steady and. If anything, a little stronger.
