After Last Klaht'a
Work.
With lx games of double tn progr,
flv of them tournament games, the tennli
court! of Omaha Field club presented a
busy appearance yesterday evening. The
occasion wa th opening ot tho city
championship tournament In doubles. The
event had been gotten up on rather thort
notice, as a sequel to the single champion
ship, which was settled last Saturday, and
Ixteen pairs were found to enter. Among
the thirty-two name are about a halt
doxen which did- not appear Id the entry
list for th ilngles tournament.
Much Interest attache to tho pairing.
Almost without exception tho teams are
new, Toung and Caldwell being tho only
familiar combination In tho list. Moat ot
tho other are together almost for th
Brit tlmo, and It tl hardly to bo expected,
therefor, that the tournament will bring
out any very excellent team work.
' Of yesterday' revolt, thft defeat of
George Mclntyro and Frank Haskell, by
J. W. Battln and J. W. Towle, waa th
biggest surprise and It wa poof team
work that cauaed It. Haskell hi not had
th practice lately that mad his play so
successful la local tournamsnta few year
ago, and It rai almost th first time this
seaeon that he and Mclntyro had hem In
the court together. Nevertheless, they
were expected to prove one ot thl strong
est' teams of th bunch, and their defeat
has upset calculation considerably.
Mora Proaaleln; Yonnnatera.
Battln and Towle, who defeated them by
the acoro of (-0, 8-, 8-4, will this evening
go against R. K. Sunderland and Prod
Dufrene. Thla pair yesterday eTerthrew
F. M. Blish and H. D. All another cis
of tho - Titerans giving way be for th
newcomer. Sunderland and Dufrene bar
a similar method of play, both of them
relying largely oa tbelr activity ' In th
court and they certainly kept will together
and helped each other aa far aa it wai
possible for them to do. - Blish had only
returned a fiw daya before from hla Ak-
Ear-Bm outing, and h waa little out of
practice, thla being especially noticiahle la
hi service, which wsi wild and weak. Th
oore of 1-8, 8-8, 8-1, ehowa how th match
went, .
Toung and Caldwell had aa easy time
with Lynn thirwood and H. Doorby, who
aeemed to feel defeat hanging ovir them
and hardly attempted to win.
Kill and Collett had still easier vie.
torr over 0. B. Erwla and A. Moore, and
If they keep up the lam form, should
probably get through to meat Young and
Caldwell in th final. They hav a. hard
match or two between them and victory,
however, and may fall by tho wayaldo.

NEW YORK. Aug. ft Tfi wight F.
Davis International lawn tennis challenge
cup appedrs to be destined to continue to

Whitman and William A. Lamed, tho
Americana, piuyed better than Dr. Joaepbua

In the two seta played in the opening con
t"le In the singles on the courts of th
Crescent Athletic club at Bay Ridge today,
in both competitions) the point score was
one-sided and had th rain held off a little
longer the third set would unquestionably
have returned th Americans the winners.
Whitman scored his nets against Dr. Flm
at 4-1, 4-1. and Laxned against R. F. Do
hrrty at C-2, I t .
Th matches were started promptly at
3. SO, and at that hour a gallery of 4,0u0
persons filled tho grandstands and every
point of vantage. The opening service In
esch contest fell to tho Americana. Fred
Mansfield acted as referee for the Whit-man-Dr.
Plm match and Rob Wrenn for
thet between learned and Doherty.
Whitman began his aervlc with a
straight awlft ball that proved a fault. On
hlr second trial the ball struck tru and
oa th second return Dr. Plm drove a poor
back-hander Into the net which gave the
first point to th unbeaten Yankee cham
pion. Whitman lobbed over his opponent's
had for the next, point, then ran into th
net and smashed for the third In a wsy
that seemed to dnse the Briton. Dr. Plm
then got two points by a pans and an out
by Whitman, but tho latter took the open
lng game on a beautiful line drive. Th
old-tim champion of England was slow In
comparison with hi Ysnkee opponent. The
latter wa all dash and covered his court
to perfection. Whenever Dr, Plm tried t
get to the net Whitman lobbed over his
head to the baseline, and the Englishman

the playing In the hope of finishing the
match before tho rain cam. He outplayed
Dr. 1'im at every point and wa willing to
continue the play Into the third set, but
Referee Richard -decided to postpone th
matches until 10:30 tomorrow, at which
time tho third e will be played and th
remaining matches In th single contested.
Captain Collins, manager of th English
team, wa much chagrined at th showing

The real sport ot th play was furnished
In the Larned-Doherty match, and it waa
not long before the attention was all drawn
to th court nearest the club house where
the younger players were engaged. It was
th keen interest taken in this match which
kept the crowd la th open some time after
the rain started, for, unlike the other part
of th tournament, thl match continued
until th downpour necessitated a cessa
tion . of : play. There was scarcoly n play
which waa not applauded and tho expert,
ritus displayed was of the highest ordur.
Lamed wotjld hardly be said to hav out
classed the Briton, and while the points
score show a disparity somewhere In the
Englishman's game, the latter showed that
ho Is no cheap adversary. Lamed displayed
a particularly ft re eye for the aide line
