THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: SUNDAY, AUGUST 3, 1002. UNSTEADY PITCHING LOSES Gifts Grow lots Buna far Dsa Koines, Decidiif the Gam QUINN'S LAST FIND IS A WONDER Feeae? ( Mlesleslaal Skats Out Oniki with Asparea4 Eu, feat ' Gets Wanderfal Sepaert fraat Hla Tram Kiln On Feeney from Natche proved ' his pitching prowMa at Vinton Street park Saturday y letting the Rourke Rangers down without a tally. Meanwhile .Joe Qulnn'a Dei Molnea houie party aeored three times. Thla wae not a pleaaant welcome home for tha Omahaa, especially aa the 1,000 spectators exhibited conalderabla glee at the undeniable pretty work of tha Under taken. The fact that It remained for new one from the Cotton Belt league to administer the pill did not enhance the sit nation, but tha aetto eerved to ahow the locale that there baa been good reason for Feeney's winning ao many of tha gamea ha fcae pitched for Des Molnea. The rl 1 tore played an errorless game, ut Omaha's Infield was alao superb, there Ibelng not an error of consequence around the angle lines, while some stellar plays iwere made. Raekofs catch' against the fence of Dolan'e fly was the Holding sen sation of the afternoon. . Qulnn'a retainers did no wonders with Ihe stick, aa they made but aeren hlta, which were bunched only once and then pot cloaely enough to win tha game alone. Omaha's l'trr Werk. As matter of fact unsteady pitching and an error were responalble for all the vls itors' runa. By the sixth Inning Owen bad already glyeu three walks, but saved him self each time, because one hit was the total off him for those Are Innings. In tha sixth, however, Frank tempted fate once too often, for after he had given Clark hla base that astute outfielder stole second and rama home easily on O'Leary'a two bagger. Thus the game seemed won on only two bits, while Omaha had made five to data. Just for that Cap Stewart retired Owen and put Brown In. Mordecal started well and did not give any bates on balls, but ha developed a tendency to bit batters that served tha same purpose. He started the ninth by giving Warner a belt In the back. Then Burg fouled out to Oondlng, and Backof drove a single a c rose aecond sack. Graham stooped to pick It up, but sur prised himself by letting It go through his fingers to the fence. So Warner acored and Backof made third, scoring on Lobeck'a single that followed. Frank Genlns could walk on bla sprained ankle enough to umpire a great game. There waa not a kick or a delay at any time and It la a cinch what Frank can Bo if ha wishes when he quits wearing the Short pants. "Podge" Alloway worked out before tha game, aa usual. The Field rluh team lost two games yes terday by all-around Inferior playing, tfhey could not hit nor field nor run bases in the terrific heat and the r'tchers seemed paralysed. Their opponents, however, yeemed to enjoy it and fairly burnt holes In the diamond with speedy work. Their pitchers had all the society hoys at their will, aa the score shows. In the first game Martin pitched fine ball, but his support was yellow and he had no encouragement. Sullivan and Rueff were altogether too much for the second team and won the game with ease. in the second game the C. N. Diets team tore up the first team in fine style. Crelgh seemed to be the only society lad who could hit Nestlebush. who pitched a su perb game, striking out nine men and al lowing only four hits. HANDSOME BROWN PACES WITH EASE MeHeary Saya tke Stallion Waa Going Eaay, kat He Did Rot Make aa EaTert ta Lower tka Record. COLUMBUS, O.. Aug. 1. Tha feature of tha cloalng day of tha Grand circuit har ness meet waa tha succeasful attempt of the undefeated pacing stallion, Dan latch, to beat tha record of bla aire, Joa Fatchen, 1:01V4- Driven by his trainer, Myron Mo Henry, the handsome brown horse circled tha track In 1:00, half a second faster than hla tire's record. The quarters were aa 'follows: 11. 29, I0U, 10H. Tha horse finished pulled and tbera Is no question that he could have mads the mile In two minutes lat or even faster If McHenry had driven him out in tha laat quarter. Tha track waa lightning fast and the weather waa calm when McHenry brought tha great atalllon out for tha trial. Hs cored down once and tha next time was sent away, accompanied by a runner. The first quarter around tha turn waa paced to thirty-one aeconds. When he turned Into tha back stretch McHenry let him fly and tha halt waa reached In one minute flat. The third quarter around the upper turn was reached In 1:8014 and the horse was going ao easy when ha straightened away for the wire that it waa evident that he could not fall to break tha record. About fifty yards from tha wire McHenry began to pall Dan and though ha succeeded In partially stopping him before the wire waa reached, the mile was finished tn 1:004. Mr. McHenry made the following state ment after the trial: "My Intention waa to drive Patch a mile close to 1:014. but not quite reaching that march, thua escaping the penalty of tha record and leaving the horse In the 2:04 class. Ha waa ao good, however, and paced ao easily that wa made faster time than I Intended. When I saw that he waa certain to beat old Joe's mark I tried to atop him. but could not alow blm up In time. I am aorry now that I did not drive him out, for I am aura that ha could hava come to tha last quarter In twenty-nina seconds or better, equalling or lowering Star Pointer's record of 1:69. He will do It before the season Is over." The races were tarns and uninteresting, tha only redeeming feature being Roamer'a victory in the 1:11 pace. An accident today marred what waa expected would prove to be the greatest event In turf history. In the third heat of tha $50,000 match race between Lord Derby, owned by E. E. Bmathers of New York, and Boralma, of which Thomas W. Lawson of Boston la the owner, the latter horse sus talned an Injury which caused him to be drawn and tha race was given to Lord Derby. Tha result was a bitter disappointment not only to the owner of tha Boston horse. but to tha general public, which to tha number of 15,000 congregated at Charter Oak park. Tha Injury to Boralma la such that ha will probably be prevented from racing for soma time. In scoring tha Boa ton horse gashed tha quarter of hla nigh foreleg badly and was unable to start In the fourth neat. Tha flrat heat of the Lord Derby-Bor alma race was won by Boralma. Time, 2:08. Lord Derby had the pole, but loat in tha first half mile. Coming down the stretch Lord Derby went Into tha air and It waa Boralma's heat with eaae. Lord Derby was the winner of tha sec ond heat. Time, 1:0914- Lord Darby won tha third heat. Time. 3:1814. Tha day was perfect for racing. A light breese prevailed, but it waa not strong enough to Interfere with tbe speed of the horses. The track waa in splendid shape and everything was favorable to record-breaking time. Horsemen from all over the country were on hand to wltnest the contest Among tha celebrities who occupied boxes were William C. Whitney and B. F. Tracy, both former secretaries of the navy, and Arnold Lawson of Bos ton,, a son of Boralma's owner, was seated In a box bealds John Roach, tha repre sentative ef Thomas W. Lawson. Lord Derby was a hot favorite tn the betting. Juat before tha flrat heat odds of 1 to 1 were freely offered on him. When Boralma won the flrat heat tha odds were even, and at tha close of tha second heat, which was won by Lord Derby, they shifted decidedly In favor of the latter. The Judgee were C. K.'O. Billings of Chi cago, R. E. Ferrln of Buffalo and ex-Mayor Harbison of Boston. Frank Walker of New York acted as starter. Racers oa the Track. The racers cama on tbe track shortly after I o'clock, both being greeted by pro longed cheering. Oeera. driving Lord Derby, won tha toss for position and chose tbe pole. After scoring three times, during which Oeers showed a disposition to hold bark Lord Derby, Starter Walker gave tha word to go. The Boston horse outstepped Lord Derby from tbe start. Ha took posses sion of the pole at the first turn and held It all the way, Tha horses were about a length apart until the homestretch was reached. As they came toward the wire Lord Derby swerved and broke, and Boralma came under tha wire four lengths ahead In 1:08. Loud cheering marked the finish, of the heat. Aa the horses cama to the track for tha second heat,' Oeers expressed con fidence that Lord Derby would win. The horses got off promptly and Boralma led until the distance pole was passed; then Lord Derby drew up and shot by Boralma. The Boston horse followed gamely and ral lied, but the rally waa followed by a break and he crossed tha wire two lengths be hind Lord Derby. In this heat Boralma showed signs of lameness. Time, 1:0914. In the third heat Boralma once mora took the lead at the start, but his ad vantage waa shortlived. Ha broke at the turn and sgain at tha atretch. As tha racers came toward tha wire It was plainly evident that something serious had hap pened to Boralma, for he went to pieces and Oeers pulled Lord Derby In order not to distance his unlucky rival, and allowed Boralma to come within a length of htm at the wire. Time, 2:1814- Boralma Badly Injared. As soon aa tha heat waa over tha an nouncer called for a veterinary aurgeon. Dr. O. II. He told a representa tive of the Associated Press that the wound was the result of the horse over reaching and the gash cut In tbe Jeg waa four Inches In length. He was unable to mj If tha horse had been permanently Injured. T. D. Marsh, who drove Boralma, said he was unable to tell Just when tha accident occurred, but was of the opinion that It occurred at the three-quarters pole. Mr. Roach, Mr. Lawson'a representative, said the Injury would undoubtedly prevent the race between the Boston horse and The Ab bott on August 30. The Lawson contingent waa deeply disappointed and said that Boralma would hava won had ha not been Injured. In addition to the big match there were luice viiier eventa on tha card.
