LABOR AND INDUSTRY.
The auditor of the South Wales and Mon
mouthshire Iron and steel trade sliding
scale board haa awarded the steel workers
an Increase of 1V per cent from July 1.
This brings the rate of wages up to 14 per
cent above the standard.
Eight hours a day, with 20 cents an hour,
has been agreed upon by a committee representing-
the 2.500 building lu borers at
Boston and vicinity and the Maaon Build
ers' .'.torlation. It la expected that reace
will thus be kept, at least for one year.
Cleveland, Lngland, Ironatone miners
have determined that at the next aduat
ment of their wages they will apply for
an advance, as the celling prices of Cleve
land pig iron have gone up 3 shillings dur
ing the last quarter and 6 shillings and 6
pence during the last half year.

announced that for the future as many
women as possible will be employed by
them In those posts suitable for women.
They will hold positions In ticket offices,
telegraph offices, be telephone clerks st the
counting offices and at the goods office.
In Prussia a great many women are al
ready employed In various government
posts and each year sees Ire ft openings
