CHICAOO. July 22. There was marked
Variance between the slumping provisions
market today and the highly manipulated
condition of September wheat, thm in
fluenced sharp advances In all gralna In
the face of bearish conditions. Outsiders
tired of carrying the load of lofty prlc.-s
lor the packing Interests, unloaded today
with such vim mat pora di-oko inc a onrm.
On the other hand, the rumor that a
Kadlng packer was under September wheat
pushed that cereal up aharply. Sympathy
did the rest, and July and September wheat
closed c up, corn H4c higher, September
corn lfalHc up, July oats 3c higher and
Beptember 06 ts 11Hc higher. Provisions
closed 32o to 70c lower.
Trade In provisions, although not heavy,
was almost panicky at times today. Hogs
at the stock yards have been marketed
vary freely of late, tempted by high prices.
Today the trices slumped to a figure soo
tinder last Friday's prlcea. Buyers were
(very bearish and as a result the temper
In the provisions pit was bearlshly In
fluenced. The outaider who took on a
ejood lead during the recent dull spurt has
. arrown quite tired of the burden. Qeneral
liquidation, which set In to some extent
yesterday, was very marked today. There
jwss vigorous trading on the part of the
ferofesslonals, but few speculators wanted
the stuff, so apparent was the decline.
J'ackers seemed to have abandoned their
IL, until toward the close, when a llttie
tuff was taken to stop the decline. Sep-

Volnme of Transactions Drop Off,
Thongh Speculators Are Active.
NEW TORK. July 22 Today's stock
market waa not ud to the recent level
of aotiviety, the total dealings tailing con
siaeraDiy peiow tne million snare mark.
This was practically the only effect ap
parent from the doubta aroused by the
current outward movement of gold. Spec
ulative forces recent at work continued
operations on a large scale, although shift
ing 1110 neia 01 tne operations to new
Quarters.
The eastern railroad stocks, led by the
New York Central, were the features of
tne market, tne Reading stocks being In
ciuaea in tne movement. The buying was
by the brokers usually employed of late
by the western contingent In its large
operations. The ostensible basis of buying
was the rumor of new and comprehensive
agreement amongst the railroad powers in
tne eastern territory, including the Penn
sylvania ranroaa, tne vanoerbiits and Mr.
Morgan, with the addition of striking gain
by a miscellaneous group of stocks, the
market made a fair show of strength. w
The grain camera were Inclined to heav
lneas early, owing to reports of showers
in tne western states, but they stiffened
up afterward, apparently under the In
fluences of the violent' rise In Rock la
land, which advanced more than 8 points
men couapsea, witn a nnai recovery to
doui i points over last nignt.
The strength of Amalgamated was at
tributed to the securing of an injunction
against the working of a disputed mine
by a rival. A number of other Industrials
rose strongly without explanation.
it was noticeable, nowever, mat there
were neglected and heavy stocks all
through the list. There is much pushed
conjecture as to the limits likely to be
reached by the outward gold movement.
Tentative arrangements for the export of
anotner million aoiiars tnis ween were
made today. The continued selllna of
stocks here for London account facilitated
the arrangement. It has been supposed
that additional credits abroad sufficient to
prevent gold exports could be easily pre
served, pending the fall exports of grain
and cotton and notwithstanding the heavy
foreign inaeoteaness Known to nave been
extended as a result of last year's short
age In our grain exports.
The disappointment of these expectations
seems to be due to the forced liquidation
in London of speculative accounts in South
Africans, for which the public demand
is said to be disappointingly small. Part
of thla liquidation cornea from Paris and
is supplemented by realising on American
securities, which are thrown upon the
New York market by large sales, owing
to the advancing tendency of prices here.
It Is noteworthy that the sub-treasury
here paid out today upwarda of half a
million dollars of assay office checks on
account of the Klondike gold received at
Seattle and San ranclsco, thus affording
a considerable offset to withdrawals of
gold for export The running deficit in the
government revenues continues to be dls
bursed into tne money market, thus re
lieving bank reserves from all require
ments on that account.
Soms of the convertible bonds were in

was good demand ffor money today and
the supplies were Increased. Rates were
fairly easy and the Indebtedness to the
Rank of England was small. Business on
the Stock exchange opened irregular and
with a dull tendency. The Improvement of
late yesterday was short lived, but It
served - to avert a threatening wholeaale

Paris operator having a quantity of stock
open In London forced him to liquidate.
which Intensified the depression. It ts
feared that there will be other forced reali
sations before the beginning of the settle'
ment at the week-end. High class securl
ties opened weak in sympathy with con
tinued selling. Consols recovered some
what later. Home rails were rather better,
but buying was restricted, pending the pay
ment of dividends. Americans were irregu
lar, neglected and had a reactionary tend
ency. In sympathy with New York. They
improved partially later and closed firm.
Argentines, Rio tlntos and Kaffirs were
dull.
PARIS, July 22. Prices on the bourse to
day opened generally better, except rentes
and Russian industrials. Ite there was
a further Improvement Turks were In

CATTLE There was a liberal run of
cattle here today, and Included in the re
celpta was a large number of western rat
tie. and in fact there were more westerns
hers today than on any previous day so far
this season. . ine oemana was tairiy gooa
for the better grades, but when it came
to the common kinds tne market was
dull all around.
There were only a few comfed steers on
sale this morning, and the bulk of what
did arrive waa of only fair quality. The
best that could be said of the market was
that it was rather slow, but not much
lower on the choicest bunches. The com
moner grades, though, were slow sale and
weak owing to tne (act tnat grass cat tie
are now oomlng in competition witn tne
part fat comfeds. Sellers found it rather
a difficult proposition to sell out at what
they considered satisfactory prices.
The cow market was in rainy gooa snape,
and In fact the srood to choice grades met
with ready sale at fully steady prices, and
in some cases sales were made tnat looKea
little stronger. The commoner kinds did
not move aa freely, but still they sold for
about aa much aa they did yesterday.
Bulls, veal calves and stags also sold at
right around steady prices, where the qunl
Itv waa at all gooa.
There was quite an active demand for
the better grades of feeders this morning
and those showing flesh as well as quality
commanded strong prices. Tho?e lacking in
flesh snd quality were a nine negiectea
but still they could be quoted steady.
Western beer steers are just oeginning
to arrive, but there has not been enough
of them sold to establish a market. The
trade at present Is In rither an experimen
tal stage, aa packers 00 not Know now
the cattle are going to kill out, and for
that reason are a little cautious about bid
ding. Some pretty fair Idaho cattlo sold
it 18.10 ana lO.rl tnat was consinerca a
fair price. Feeder buyers took hold in
good shape of the cattle that were a little
too thin for packers, and sales of that
kind were made around $4.63 and $4.70.
