THE OMAHA DAILY HEE: SATURDAY, JULY 5, 1002. 0 0MAI1A AGAIN IN THE LEAD Ttkei a Doubla-Header from Kama City bj Superior Ball Pitying. OUTBAT AND OUTFIELD NICHOLS' HEN Gealas Hit In tho Head with a Ball la Flrat Inning of Flrat Game , aad U Forced to Retire. KANSAS CITY. Julr 4. (Specie! Tele grm.) If tne crowd of about 4,000 spec tstors that went to 6port(man'i park to day thought that it waa to bsve ft mo nopoly on the noise and the display of flre worka, the crowd was mistaken. Ths homo patriots, the Blue Stockings, had fireworks of their own. Unlike the crowd, they did 'not have It to burn, but they had It. The Nichols brand of patriotism was of the daylight, skyrocket sort, an! Oenerat Cbarlea Ntchola, the Napoleon of yesterday's Waterloos, went high up. Tho home patriots received an awful drubbing 'it tho hands of the Omabans today. They lost both games. Tba fact that these de feats sent them Into tho two-hole would sot come so bsrd If the locals bad died game, but' they didn't. Nichols and bis men went up in ft shower of yellow fire. ' It was tho Isrgest crowd Sportsman's park has seen this Season, which makes the pill all tho more bitter to Manning, Nichols It Co. ' It wss ft patriotic crowd, too. Revolvers were fired Incessantly snd the noise was deafening. In the first game the Omahaa started off In tho Initial inning with three runs. Car ter was given a base on balls and was ad vanced to 'second when ons of young Gib son's curves twisted Itself around the cranium of Qeolne, who was put down and out Owen succeeded Gen Ins and ran the baaes for him. Etone was given ft base on errors and Dolan sacrificed, sending Carter acroes the rubber. Stewart sent ft corking single to left and two more runs came In. Stewart was cut off at second In an attempted steal and the aide was re tired when Thomas struck out. Hlckey opened up with a two-sacker In Omaha's half of the second, but the next three men were quickly retired and the Omahan's teal of third did no good. Omaha cinched the game In the third. Owen got a Ufa on Robinson's fumble of an infield hit and Stone beat a slow one to first. Dolan again sacrificed, advancing both men and Stew art's second hit of tho game scored them. 'Ace was left on second. ; Tho visitors did not score In the fourth, but they added one to their credit In the fifth, when M. Hlckey threw Stone's hit Into the crowd, tho left fielder taking third on the error. Ho scored on Ace Stewart's hit, tbls being the third time that the old war horse swatted the ball squarely In the nose. v In tho seventh Oteaha put two more units on the score board, two singles, a "sacrifice, a stolen baao and a two-bagger "flolng tho business. The vlstors wero .blanked in the two remaining innings, but 'they had mors than enough. - The first gams was characterised .throughout by stupid playing on tho part of Nichols' men. They batted like school fcoys and six costly errors were chalked up against them. Had Hopes of the Seconal. Hope sprung In the breast of tho multi tude when the cone sounded for the second iame. It was a well known fact that Charles Nichols waa to do the pitching and the prediction waa put down in cold letters, "Tho blue stockings can't lose." The en trance of Nichols was greeted with the deafening discharge of 100 guns, everybody stretched and then all sat down and pre pared to enjoy the feast of victory. And tho unexpected happened. What tho vis itors did to Mr. Nichols should be written in red ink. And the change' in the lineup of tho Manntngltes did not alter the, caae. Rlsley was brougnt irom lert as a suosu tuts for Roblnaon, while Allen succeeded Hlckey at second. Rlaley was somewhat of an Improvement at third, but If Allen has ever played In fast company there was no evidence of It in his work at second or at the bat. Carter made a good start from the stand point of the Bluee, for he was tho first man up for Omaha, and Nichols handed him three wide ones., which bo struck at. Graham, however, sent ft grounder down to Allen, which that gentleman fumbled. Ho went to second on Stone's fly to left and cored on Stewart's drive to the same quar tor. Stewart waa batting like a fiend and be was a veritable Insignia of sure death to Charlie's twisters. Tho Omahans were blanked la the second, but In the third they gave tho manager of the Kansas City West- era league team a taste of high life. It waa nothing but skyrockets and Nichols was lost In his owo smoke. Stone singled to left and Dolan attempted to sacrifice and accomplished bis purpose and then some- be beat out the bunt. Stewart sacrificed ad Thomas' smashing drive to tho left garden seat Stone and Dolan across the plate. Thomas stole second and went borne with the third earned run of the 4nnlng when Gondlng bit safe to right. Owen's trlkeout retired the side. If Nlobols felt that he had been up gainst the busssaw In the third, greater trlala la the aeventh made him forget the past. He bad been slammed to the four corners of the lot, but be waa not prepared for this new onslaught. Oraham was tbs first man up and be etruck at. the first ball pitched. It went high and far, too, and by the time lh center fielder had found It In the weeda out near the railroad tracks Graham had completed the circuit. And thla waa not U. Stone followed with ft corking three acker Into the left, garden. Dolan waited .for four wide ones; Stewart hit to Shannon, 'who threw the ball Into the vicinity of tho right-field bleachers, Stone and Dolan scor ing. Stewart went home on Thomas' bit to center. CHICAGO, July 4-In ths presence of 20 000 people. O. C. Bennett s Aladdin this rternoon won the Bhendan stakes at Washington park, defeating the American -derby winner, Wyeth. and the colt which finished second In that race. Luclen Ap fteby. By a singular coincidence only the hree colts which ran one, two and three In the derby stsrted In today's race, which had moat of the western derbv colts ss ellglbles and the result, brought out victor the colt which hnd come In third In the big event on June 21. Under the condi tions of the race Aladdin had seven pounda the better of the weights, as compared with Wyeth, and five pounds as compared with Luclen Appleby. The distance of the race was a mile and A quarter, a quarter of a mile short of the derby. Wyeth opened In the betting at 7 to 6, Aladdin at 2 to 1 and Luclen Appleby at 12 to 6. At. post time Wyeth and Aladdin were each" 1 to 5. while Luclen Appleby's price re malned about stationary. The three colts Trrr?J.."ent way to a perfect start and Aladdin at once took the lead. He came past ths stand a length and a half in front of Wyeth. Luclen Appleby, as usual, trailed behind. At the first turn Coburn let out a link suddenly and had a lead of three lengths before the other boys knsw what was coming. Then Lyne pushed Wyeth, but the derby colt did not mske up the gap between himself and the lesder with any great rapidity. At the half mile pole Aladdin was running smoothly in front, two lengths to the good. Around the bend Wyeth wss sent along as fast a he could go. On the turn for home he tried to pass Aladdin on the outside, Jut Coburn pulled out and carried his challenger clearly out of ths way. Then straightening hie mount out, Coburn hurried Aladdin along down to the finish, and although Lyne whipped Wyoth. the latter never seriously threatened the leader and In fact narrowly escaped being beaten out for seo ond money by Luclen Appleby, who closed strong and steady. Aladdin won by two lengths, while only a neck separated Wyeth and Luclen Appleby. The track was slow and ths tlms was 2:16 1-6.
