efTICAGO. July I. The grsln market,
excfptli.g th manipulated corn delivery,
took a slump In prices today In acknowl
edgement of fairer weather prospect.
September wheal closed V: under yestr
day, September corn 1SC down and Sep
tember oata IhkC lower. Provision closed
higher.
The wheat market dove for a lower level
Immediately upon the opening. Feeling
was bearish on the weathur map and
purely speculative ale were augmented
by a considerable quantity of long stutl
let out on stop-loss order from ehori- mar
gin people. Much of the trade In this pit,
a In corn and oata, waa in the way of
evening up In preparation for the holidays,
during which time trader did not care to
take liberties with the weather. Beptem
ter wheat opened HtJ" to S'J-hc lower at
13a to 73e and 'lu during the foreenoon
to 73Vc. The slump naturally checked
hort selling, but bid during the remain
der of the day dlu not have to be much
over the bottom price to bring out all
kinds of offer. The clone wa o lower
at 73V4(&73Vc July waa less active than
the moderately animated Heplember and
closed lo down at 7be. Local receipt
were 48 cars, 4 of contract grade. Minne
apolis and Duluth reported Uu cars, mak
ing a total for the three place of 36 car,
against 3ft) a week ago. Seaboard clear
ances were ifJ0,(JO bushels. Primary re
ceipts aggregated 3fisK) bushels. The cor
responding day a year ago was a holiday.
The story of the day In corn is but a
repetition of the wheat market record,
ave only that July, owing to Its concen
tration In Individual hands, after sinking
lower from sheer neglect early, was
boosted near the end of the session by a
hort, who "wanted a few pecks," and
the close was lc over yesterday at 77c.
September, however, needed more than the
example of July to hold It up and there
tore followed the dictates of weather re-
forts and sought a lower level. Llqulda
inn continued all day. Spasmodic support
brought fractional rRllies, but this dlci not
disguise the undertone of weakness. Sep
tember (old between Kc and 61 Vic and
closed 110 lower at 61c. Hecelpta were
103 car.
September oat old between S4Tc and
tic and cloaed lo lower at 34Ve. The mar
Let rallied sharply to 847e. following the
opening on profit-taking by people who
went short yesterday, but thereafter the
rlce clung close to the bottom under the
Prime pressure that existed In wheat and
corn. Kecelpts were 116 cars.
, Provisions were quiet. The opening was
a trifle lower In sympathy with the cereals,
but a few buying orders executed by
brokers supposedly acting for Influential
longs led to a slight advance. September
fork closed 10c higher at $18.7H; Septem
ber lard, Sc up at $10.75, and September
ribs. 5c advanced at $10,724.
Estimated receipt tomorrow: Wheat, SO
car; corn, 116 cars; oata, 140 cars; hogs,

Richest Prices Are Made.
NEW YORK, July 2. The stock market
was very dull during, the greater part of
the session, but was stirred into some de
gree of activity In the final hour, when the
highest prices of the day were made. The
rlee was in the nature of a demonstration
aitalnat the short Interest, which h-td
looked for a flurry In the money market
before the close that would enable them
to cover at a profit. The flurry failed to
materialize and when the shorts attempted
to cover they bid prices up on themselves.
There was a sharp reaction In the Anal
dealings snd the market closed easy.
The tone during the day was notably
Arm and the market much of the charac
ter as for some days past. The clearing
weather In the southwest and the great
Improvement In the crop harvesting con
dition was the basis of the strength in the
market and the grain-carrying roads led
the advance.
The money rate opened at per cent and
there were fears that the demand Incident
to carrying over for three days would
stiffen the rate before the close but the
rate on the contrary declined. The hope
Is entertained that easier money condition
will soon follow the completion of the

Sterling at Paris, wever, advanced
sharply today and relftxed tha pressure for
gold. ,
Another development '.i the weakness of
New York exchanges: Chicago, which fell
to 60 cents discount today. Chicago re
ports a heavy demfcuAfrom northwestern
points for currency, ;. There has been no
los by New York 4)nks on Interior ac

BRADSTREKT'S REVIEW OP TRADE.
Weather Greatly Depresses Crop Out
look and Retards Many Lines.
NEW YORK, July 3. Bradstreefs says:
Weather an . crop conditions have been
first In evidence this week, divers Influences
affecting different sections to help or de
press trade. Throughout the northern half
of the country from the Atlantic coast to
the Rocky mountains, except In some parts
of tha northwest, cool, wet weather has
arrested or Injured crop development, and
checked re-orders and fall business with
Jobbers.
On the upper South Atlantic coast crop
conditions have been favorable and trade
has been measurably helped there by
extremely hot weather except In the mid
dle section, raina affecting crop and trade
conditions. Warmer, dry weather is needed
In the northern and western section of th
country If summer trade Is to reach Its
full development.
Eastern cities note the check given by the
weather to retail trade and the summer
resort business. Grain markets have been
considerably excited kvy the heavy and al
most torrential rains reported In the cen
tral west. Winter wheat harvesting has
been Interfered with, the oatacrop ha
been damaged and the growth or the corn
crop ha been arrested. To just what ex
tent Injury has been done remain (or
warm, fine weather lo disclose.
Th'- situation has not changed materially
!n Industrlnl lines. Signs of the ift coal
strike In Virginia and West Virginia fall
to Increase and a number of mines
have resumed. The Kentucky and Illinois
coal miners announce that they will not
strike and thus violate their contracts.
In the Birmingham district the miners and
operators have failed to agree and a sun-
Sension or work was inaugurated Julv I.
lulldlng trade troubles are not ao notice
able as previously. The class shutdown
has become universal, but this Is the usual
vacation suspension.
A favorable development has been the
voluntary granting of higher wages to
inn.ouo men In the Iron and steel industry.
The anthracite strike drara on. but a
change Is looked for next week. The soft
coal miners and coal-carrying roads are
reaping a rich harvest. Small supplies of
coke operate against the fullest develop
ment of Iron production
Between the hl;h Driers for material
and tha total absence of storks Inquiries
Diisinen m iron ann sreei stirrers.
Trade In dry nods, boot and shoe and
slimmer wear of all sorts Is restricted. Raw
Wool is in quite active demand In the weat
nd in firmer tone - In the east, where
stocks are small and manufacturers ts need
or supplies.
Lumber is rather nufter at tha east
but stocks of-all kinds are low and prices
ar nrmer inrre end at ine west.

CATTLE There was an extremely light
run of cattle here today for a ihuraday,
but the general opinion was that It waa
owing to the fact that tomorrow will be a
holiday, and shippers are Inclined to be
afraid of the market at such times. As
will be seen from the table of receipts
above, the supply for the four days of this
week la smaller than for the same days
of last week, but about the same as for
the same days of last year.
There were hardly enough steers on snle
today to make a market, but the few that
were offered were picked up In a hurry at
strong prices and some sales looked con
siderably higher, f or tne week to date it
Is safe to say that the market on the good
to choice grades Is fully lOyloc higher, and
In some cases more. Packers all seem to
be anxious for cattle showing flesh and
quality, and the market today was at the
high point of the year. The Inferior grades
nd especially sucn as snow grass, are
no more than steady, with the close ot
last week. It Is thought that a prime
bunch of cattle would easily reach 33 or
better at this point.
The cow market was also active and
strong on the better grade thla morning
and everytning was soia in good season.
The good dry lot cows and also tbe good
to choice grass cows are about 1015c
higher than thoy were a week ago, but the
tendency of prices on the canners and cut
ters has been downward, and as compared
with the close of last week they are prob
ably lfjl&c lower.
Buns, stags ana caives ars selling in
about the same notches they were last
week. Anything good sells freely, but com
mon kinds are neglected.
There were very few feeders offered today
and not many were wanted, as not much
demand from the country Is expected be
fore next week. t"p to today the market
has been stron5 all the week, but price
eased
off a little today. Representative

Cat shows coruuderaDl decrease as com
pared with the lima days of last week.
The table of receipts above will show tha
fjacl figures.
Tha markot opened a little slow this
morning owing to unfavorable advices from
ether points and the prices paid were
weiik to a nickel lower than yesterday.
Some hogs the first round may have sold
right close to steady, but aside from the
early sales the market was not far from
a nickel lower. Trailing was not 1'artlcu
larlj active at any time, bat rttTl prac
tically erythlng was disposed of In good
season. The same as usual the better
weight hoga were picked up first and then
the light stun change. I hands slowly at
rather uneven prices. The bulk of the good
weight bogs sold from $7.65 to $7.75 and a
few loads went above that figure. Medium
weights went largely from $7.55 to $7.60 and
the light stufl I rout $7.56 down. Repre

SHEEP There were only three cars of
sheep here today, so that a good test of the
market was not made. The three cars con
sisted of Idaho wethers, which averaged
98 pounds and sold for $8.20. The general
opinion was that It was a good strong
price, all things considered.
For the week there ha been no radical
changes In ruling prices. Monday the mar
ket held about steady, but Tuesday buyer
took oft liVyl-ic. On Wednesday the mar
ket was steady at the decline and today the
feeling was a little better, so that as com
pared with the close of last week the mar
ket could not be quoted over a dime lower
or 16c at the most.
There were no feeders offered to make a
test of the market today, but they have
commanded strong prices all the week.
