Tbe Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad
la a railroad 1.362.84 mile In length, of which 83.65 are
In the State of Nebraska.
It is not a trunk line, but one that depends upon the
rrowth of the country immediately tributary to It for it
business. The owner of this railroad hope that the pros
perity of the country through which It run will In time
make it prosperous.
In 1900 this railroad received in gross
earnings 14.121.457.93
They paid for operating expense 2,689,642.25
Net earning 1,431,815.67
This amount make a net earning of $1,050.53 per mil
(or the aystem, and they reported $1,110.42 as such not
earning to the Auditor of State In Nebraska, which,
It will be teen, gave this Stat credit for the Increased
amount received from business which originated on the
branches in other State. Out of the $1,431,845.67 they
paid $1,007,851.09 for interest on bonds outstanding, and
$181,599.74 was paid for taxes, which latter amount wa
equal to 12 7-10 per cent of their net earnings.
No dividends were paid by this company, and during
the years 1895, 1896 and 1897 there wat a large deficit
In the revenue.
In case the taxes on this road were paid on the Wis
consin bests of taxation, it would hare been $120.92 per
mile. Instead of $151.95 tn the State of Nebraska
To make a fair comparison with thla railroad It Is
necessary to select road that do a similar buslnen la
other States, and the following table give thl result:
