THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: SATURDAY, JL'NE 21, 1002. HARD COAL OUT OF SIGHT local Supply Nearly Exhamted and No respect of Renewal. EFFECTS OF STRIKE GENERALLY FELT Une Owners Kspeet to I)eal Willi Fnblle Arbitrarily with Miners and Outlook In Sot Encouraging. The anthracite coal supply In Omaha Is .becoming so short that Jobbers hsve la (some Instances been compelled to refuse wholesale orders, and the reporta from the ,coal fields are by no means reassuring. This week a local Jobber received an order 'for two cars of hard coal for Immediate delivery at a point on the Burlington road, 'and not having sufficient stock on band ;to supply the demand Kent the order to his Chicago correspondent. The answer to 'that letter has Just boon received and lis to the effect that the house would have 1X0 refuse the order as It had not sufficient (onl to supply Its regular customers. This eompany controls forty-nine collieries In 'the anthracite district of Pennsylvania and the manager writes that Its shipping docks In Chicago are empty; that the supply In Fensylvanla Is low and that all It has (control of Is what Is enroute from the Belds to Chicago. Tho manager adds: "There seems to be o new Information about the strike; both Mldea are evidently determined in their position and It seems to be a test of endur- nee. No one, so far as I have been able to ascertain, has the slightest idea when the trouble will be adjusted." Local Situation DUcooraalnK. ' Locally the visible supply has been re duced by eales to consumers who have de elded to lay In their fall supply at present prices. The rule adopted last spring as to tho wholesale price of hard coal Is still In force, which makes a low price In April la Chicago, advancing by stages of 10 cents a month per ton until September. Local dealers believe that after September 1 the miners will make a decided advance and ay that they would not be surprised to aee tho wholesale price go to H In Chicago by October 1. That price In Chicago would tnean at leaat $12 per ton In Omaha and maybe the price would go to $12.50. Dut 'It Is I not so much a question of price as of supply. One Omaha bouse which ordered 10,000 tons last spring for Immediate delivery received 6,000 tons, and the mining company now writes that it will be Impossible to deliver I the remainder until the mines resume. This mining company, while refusing to deliver orders. Is taking them for future delivery and announces a rule which If generally fol lowed will work a hardship on many com munities. It says that as soon as opera tions are resumed at the mines It will fill orders In the order received, regardless of quantity. As some of the Jobbers have made lnrvn orders it la believed that this Com pany will be so filled up with orders that it will be unable to supply the trade which , comes In the fall months, and that if all i follow this rule communities whose dealers i are backward about sending in orders will r' be compelled to run on a short supply. TROUBLE WITH POLICEMAN 'Dr. Solomon and Officer Sawyer Clash and Police Conrt t Trial Follows. I Dr. J. J. Solomon was fined $5 and costs In police court Friday morning for disorderly conduct and will appeal the case. The bearing lasted several hours and many wit nesses were examined. Or. Solomon runs lm drug store at 1837 Vinton street and was arrested Wednesday on a charge of being drunk, and according to the testimony of Policeman Sawyer, the doctor put up a strenuous fight before he would consent to Co to the patrol box. The officer testified that he had gone to Solomon's drug store to get the name and address of a little girl who had been run over by a bicycle and that after leaving the store the doctor fol lowed him down the street and asked for JaU nam. After Sawyer had written bis 'name for Solomon the latter again ran after 'blm and wanted him to come back and wear that the signed name was his, and when this was refused, the officer said, folomon created a disturbance and was ar ested. Solomon denies the officer's story. f Summer Weariness When you are exhausted, find haven't ambition or atrerjfftu to do anything, take llorsford's Acid Photphat. 'I sec that the chief of police is prepar ing to enforce the ordinance against expec torating on steps and approaches to build ings, etc.," said City Engineer Rosewater. "That 1b all very well, but there are other ordinances that are now virtually dead let ters so far be police regulation Is concerned which could be enforced to better advan tage. For example, there Is the ordinance against the hauling of garbage through the streets In vehicles that leak and strew the refuse along the pavements. What Is the use of our sweeping the streets If they are to be littered up In this way! Then there is the ordinance against dumnlng store sweepings In the gutter, nnd against dump ing weeds rut from lots In the residence districts In the streets, to be swept Into the catch basins and clog the sewers. "The ordinance against hauling garbage through the streets in vehicles imperfectly constructed for the purpose has never been declared Invalid by the courts. It Is still In force, but it Is not enforced. The courts have always held that tho hauling of garb age must be subjected to regulatons, that it may not become a publli rulsance. I think It will b well enough to regulate expecto rating after some of these more serious matters have been regelated." An ordinance against expectorating on sidewalks, on stairways, steps, approaches to buildings, in street cars, etc., was passed by the city council about nine years ago, but was afterwards amended by eliminating the word sidewalks. All the remainder of the ordinance Is still In force. Don't make the mistake by not visiting the big store of Hayden Bros. Saturday Read what they have to offer on Page 7. Announcements of the Theaters. In the coming of Sorrentlno's Banda Rosea to the Creighton Orpheum is to hear one of the world's greatest concert bands the first in all Italy, beyond ques tion, and a worthy rival of the best In this country. The band comprises forty five men who are garbed In brlliant red coats. Their appearance upon a concert platform is interesting in tho extreme, and being southerners and from a land where music is a part of everyday life, they play with an appealing force not to be had from any other nationality. "Untamed steeds of melody," they have been called. A large part of their program Is devoted to operatic selections, in which they are said to be absolutely supreme. Sorrentlno, the con ductor of the band. Is a musician to his finger tips. He Is the composer of "Wil low Grove" and other popular marches, but his best work Is in the arrangement of operatic music for his band. He has an enormous library, and his concerts will be found to be very different from anything that has been heard here before. America's Summer Resorts. SOCIALIST LABOR PARTISANS They Will Meet Early la July to Outline Campaign for the Year. On the first Sunday In July there will be a meeting of the socialist labor party of the state for the purpose of outlining a plan of campaign for the coming year. The socaHst labor party here co-operates with the socialists of Europe and Its demands In this country are practically identical with the demands ot the socialist parties of Germany, France, Belgium and England. It has no use for temporary expedients, but goes the whole way, asking for nothing less than an overthrow ot the entire exist ing social system. The socialist labor party la not numer ically strong, but, according to the state ments of members of the Omaha section, plans will be adopted to counteract the work of the Wayland socialists and to show that the socialist labor party is the only simon-pure article.
