higher, July corn Vc up end July nuia
y,'nc advanced. Provisions showed
marked Independent strength and closed
foe to 12'4jC higher.
From the ouiset wheat was bullish. Liv
erpool made good advances and Furls, In
addition to yesterday's strength, showed in
creases of lVul'V. Foreign maraets were
extremely nervous over Ihe prospects of

wheat was ripe and awaited cutting, but
that the ground was In such aoaked con

this bullish and a general Improvement In
outside busln-ss on the Hoard of Trade,
shorts considered it time to cover, bentl
jnent wns bullish and grew more stronmy
so every moment with advancing prices.
There was a fair cash demand and the
future market showed no ajft spots. It
was supposed that there was a large long
Interest In July wheat but If such were
the case not enough of the holdings were
unloaded to make any perceptible change
In the sentiment. Business was more active
In wheat th:in for a long lime. July wheat

close, T.c up, ut 74V.C Trading was very
good in deferred futures, Local r'!il

neapolis and Duluth reported 2: cars mak

against 215 last week and 293 la year ago.
I'r.mary receipts were 339,000 busheis, com

board clearances In wheat and flour equaled
171,l) bushels. Argentine shipments were
7o4,000 bushels, compared to K04.0H) bushels
lust week. The seaboard reported 15 loads
taken for export.
Corn was strong and higher most of the
(cession, but ruled comparatively quiet.
The big bulls were seemingly dormant,
ewaltlng another opportunity to arry out
their manipulations. Trad was small and
wns done mostly by commission nouses.
There was a fair demnnd In the most dis
tant futures and nothing new developed
In the July "deal." Strength of wheat
and the wet weather were the bullish In
centives. There was almost no eel lug
Pressure. While receipts were increased at
9 cars, only 22 cars graded contract. July
sold between t'Ao and 66c and closed firm.

trade was not large n the buying side, the
position of oats was so strong that Juy

161 cars, only 10 of contract grade
Provisions showed marked and Independ

atarted out strong, but gradually eased off.
All the product list responded to the early
strength st the yards and made sharp nd
tvancea. Cash stuff was in good demand
at higher prices and all the smaller offer
ings were quickly absorbed by packers
brokers. A slight dip followed the steadv
close of the hog market, but the end of
the session showed prices almost at the

Market Slides Into Somnolent State
Trlth Small Volume ot Deallngce".
NEW YORK. June 20. The speculative
liquidation which broke prices yesterday
was no longer in evidence today, but the
market slipped back Into ft rather apathe
tic condition, the dealings dropping well
below 5(10,000 shares again. Of this total a
large proportion was concentrated in a
few leading stocks, notably I'nited States
Steel, Missouri Pacific, St. Puul and the
Wabash3.
The evidence of support for United States
Steel wns an effective Influence In steady
ing the market, as yesterday's sharp break
In that stock had unsettled sentiment in
tho whole market. There was evidence of
rebuylng of stocks by the large Interests
which liquidated yesterday and the day be
fore. This served to relieve a latent feel
ing that the recent bull campaign had been
a preliminary to a prolonged bear cam
paign. Today's strength was restricted to
a lew points and was -not very well main
tained, the closing being dull and heavy.
The Southwesterns and St. Paul absorbed
a large share of the strength. St. Louis
Southwestern preferred rose nearly 3 points
and In connection with a slightly greater
rise In Chicago & Eastern Illinois gave rise
to a report that the latter road was to be
purchased by the former.
The movement In the western roads was
not accounted for by the crop news, which
was rather unfavorable as to grain. The
country coalers were rather neglected and
moved In a narrow way.
Reports by the banks of a gain on the In
terior currency movement up to Thursday
night of over $3,000 gave rise to the hope of
a favorable bank statement, as the offset
absorption by the sub-treasury for the
same period was only $397,000. Bankers ex
pressed the opinion this evening that the
statement would show a considerable ex
pansion In loans, but the continued ease of
call money does not Indicate that the sur
plus has been materially impaired
More attention was given 10 the sterling
market, which advanced an additional frac
tion. London selling stocks here freely
Continental excha.ige was easy, while
sterling at Paris fell another fraction.
The Bank of England gained neurly $3,.
000.000 In gold yesterday, which Is a reas
surlng development for the whole financial
world. In view of the heavy semi-annual
requirements upon that Institution. Heavy
pension payments during the week are the
cause of the light demands of the New
York sub-treasury upon the money market.
It Is a notable fact that the government's
surplus, revenue Is still under $l.0o0,ooo for
this month, compared with nearly $11,000,
000 for the same period In last June, and
reports from Washington Indicate that the
treasury authorities hardly expect the
year's surplus to reach the estimated figure
or j'jo.ooo.ooo. witn ten nays remaining or
ne fiscal year tne surplus is sua oeiow
$0.000.000.
The rains in the west, wnicn are qelay-

CATTLE There were hardly enough cat
tie here to make a market, and th.. condl
tion of the trade. was much the same as !t
has been In some days. Desirable grades
are In demand, while grassy stock are weak
sellers.
Beef steers made up a large part of the
limited run and included several lots of
pretty decent drylot beeves. Packers,
aa heretofore, were out after the decent
grades, and prices tended strong on the fair
to good steers. jmn and grassy cattle
sold about in yesterday s notches for any
thing at all useful.
Tho market for cows and heifers was
lightly supplied and practically unchanged
from yesterday. The supply was small and
there were few fed cattle In sight. Pack
ers picked up the decent grades at stea-ly
lo strong figures. Bulls, stags and v. -a I
calves sold generally steady If good, with
the market Inclined to weakness on In
ferior offerings.
The stock cattle market shows very little
change from that of the last several days.
There were few received. Oood feeders are
In good request, and other grades are jlow
weak sellers. Stock cows and heifer are
also rather poor sellers at uncertain prices,
