CITTCAOO. June 17. Corn was on the
rampage today, and. headed by the bull
crowd that has cornered July options, led
the unfortunate shorts a rapid and ex
citing chase. Early In the day the word
went "round that the screws were to be
put on the shorts long before the nettling
day. Nervousness pervaded the pit and
aoon the ahorta began to accept the In
evitable and got out of their deals with
aa little lost aa possible. A tight hand
wai hold on much of the corn early, but
aoon the market ran away. The bulla did
rot seem to rare to keep It In check and
the day cloaed with a net gain of 3 He In
July corn. Other pita were neglected In
the Interest that centered In corn, and
July wheat cloned a shade down and July
oata a shade lower. l'rovlslons closed Shi
j74c lower.
The corn pit wsa In a constant boll from
tart to finish. It wai a day for corn
mnri nrftfttrn 11 v evervthlna- else was lost
alght of. Pit conditions were mixed. There
la little doubt that the principals back of
the corner In July, which Is credited to
the Otttes' and Wall street crowd, are
trying to move out all contract atuff. The
country probably could furnish plenty of
tuff with which to supply the shorts, but
the wet weHther worked against the grad
ing. Of today's receipts only 10 out of 378
cars graded No. 2. Trlmary receipts were
Increased to 477,000 bushels and private
levators were making good Increases In
stocks. But, all told, there was cause for
fear among the shorts, for It Is thought
by old speculators that the long-expected
aquerse Ts at hand, otherwise the bulla
would not allow the price to run away
as It did today. Contract stocks today
were a little over 2,0n0.ono bushels. The
bull crowd Is credited with having lB.OOO.ono
bushels of July. Predictions are for 76a
corn, as a result of this situation, and
fluctuations today warranted such predic
tions. July opened unchanged to He up
at 64c to 64"4c after having sold yester
day as low as 63c. A sharp ten minutes
buying sent the price to 60e. "The bulls
supplied enough long stuff on profit-taking
to let the price slip back to 66V,c, but then
the shorta became panic stricken, the mar
ket turned erratlo again and July shot
to 67M.C, where It closed very strong and
8M,c higher than yesterday's close. The
Oates crowd was on both sides of the
market, but sold more than It bought.
Ueferred futures were traded In lightly,
but wers Influenced somewhat by the ad
vance In July. Cash business was not so
good as recently and country offerings
were small. Cash stuff was selling E'usc
under July prices.
Wheat ruled steady. It was strongest
early on higher Paris cables and showers
southwest. Traders Bald the wet weather
was Interfering with harvesting and for
this reason would sell little. The absence
of any heavy trading worVed against
prices and. although July corn strength
helped wheat somewhat, fluctuations wore
very narrow. July opened unchanged to
ic up at 72ra72'tc and sold to 72c Light
selling caused a dip to 71T4i 78c and July
closed steady and a shade lower at Tl&
72Mbc. The chief bearish Influence at pres
ent appears to be the scattered first ar
rivals of new wheat here and In the south
western markets, although good premiums
re reported on sales of new wheat. IcaJ
receipts were 48 cars, 18 of contract grade.
Minneapolis and Duluth reported SS cars,
making a total for the three points of 148
cars, against 150 laat week and 437 a year
ago. The worlds available supply de
creased 4,461,000 bushels. Primary receipts
were 279,000 bushels, against 486,000 buaheW
Inst week. Seaboard clearances In wheat
end flour equaled 142,000 bushels. The sea
board reported 31 loads taken for export.
OaU were dull but steady, fluctuating
within a range of only c. There was not
much stuff offered, although receipts wers
liberal at 226 cars. Trade paid more at
tention to corn. July early sold at 89c,
dipped to 86c and closed a shade lower
end steady at 29Hc
The provision trade was almost nil. Hors
were easy at the yards, and after a little
early support prices In the pit slid back
slightly. July pork sold at $17.86 and closed
7Vo down at $17.56, July lard cloaed 5c
down at $10.15 and July ribs 2Vc lowor
at $10.40.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat,
0 cars; corn, 175 cars; oats, 110 cars; hogs,
W.000 head.

Animation Consplcaoos In Spots and
Market (salts Active and Steady.
NEW TORK. June 17. Yesterday's vol
ume of activity In streaks was about main
tained today and the degree of diversity
of the trade was very similar. The move
ment of prices was rather Irregular, tn
spite of the striking gains by some of the
stocks which led the market In point of ac
tivity, a movement to- take profits in St.
Paul sdded to the lrresrular annearanoe of
the market, as the grain carrying railroads
generally showed some conspicuous points
or strength.
The upward movement In the Readings
was also pronounced and the dealings Tn
that stock were on a very large scale, even
alter allowing ror its enumeration as nait
shares. The forces hack of these move
ments were concentrated and their opera
tions were not conspicuous outside of a few
Stocks. It was not clear that the large
buying movements in all cases were from
Identical sources, but It was evident that
the operations were In concert.
The brokers who were buying Reading

absorption of Missouri Pacific seemed to
come from other sources, said to be a
pool which has operated In this stock for
many months. Union Pacific maintained Its
recent stable tendency and the Atchlsons
were not so active as yesterday.
Heverai minor stocxs among tne gran
gers were active and strong, notably the
8t Joseoh A Grand Island stocks, under
TTte combined Influence of the approach of
the dividend period ana rumors or ab
sorption by Union Pacific.
There was great irregularity among the
Industrials, but the most Important stocks
n that department were heavy. There
was active liquidation In sugar, owing to
unfavorable opinion of the chances of Cu
ban reciprocity in the senste.
United States Steel stocks were o im
pressed by yesterday's Injunction. Gen
eral Electric was easily forced down 9
points on light selling. There was demand.
on tne otner nana, tor presseo steel car,
American car, snuff, bicycle preferred and
New York dock, the last named rislna tiw;
points. There was no news to explain the
movements among the leaders, beyond the
progress of a speculative campaign.
The excitement In the corn market seem
ingly did not affect the com carrying rail-
roads, as 11 was not aasociaiea wiin paa
D reports. The f&lllns- of showers In the
cotton belt was learned with satisfaction
and the strength of wheat In foreign mar
kets, which was reflected here, was a fa
vorable Influence on the price of securities.
There was nothing In the news from the
coal strike to account for Reading, though
assertions were heard in Wall street that
the collapse or tne strike was probably
near at hand.
There was no uneasiness apparent on the
aDnroach for the time for the semi-annual
settlement end the known requirements for
several syndicate operations, including the
fiayment of $8,000,000 for the Western Mary,
and railroad at Baltimore this week. The

CATTLE The run was talr and Included
some very desirable beef steers. The bulk
of the offerings consisted ot ordinary to
fair butchers' stock, range cattle and
Blockers and feeders.
Beef steers made up a fair proportion of
the supply and among the offerings were
a numoer of loads 01 very decent steers.
The Inquiry was lully equal to the supply
and desiraole steers found ready sale at
good, strong figures. Partly finished grades
showed slight change in value. Urassy
stuff. If common, moved rather siowiy.
However, no special change In the general
Trade was apparent.
Cows and heifers. If good, were free
sellers st good, strong prices and the
decent graces wers picked up early. Grass
cows and heifers, while selling to nil In,
showed no special change as to value ex
cept a tendency to lower prices on the in
ferior grades. The movement was fairly
brisk and a good clearance was made
early.
Bulla, stags, veals and odds and ends of
all kinds were picked up to fill In at prac
tically unchanged figures.
Btockers and feeders. It choice In quality,
were In steady request at recent quota
tions. Coarse offerings are more or less a
drag on the market and values are uncer
tain, the trade dragging from day to day.

HOGS The receipts today were pretty
liberal but hardly up to the usual Tuesday
run of late. Conditions were rather
against sellers, ss weak markets prevailed
at other leading centers. The market
opened slow, with a lower tendency all
around, and while the right toppy grades
were not so much off, the commonlsh loads
were generally quoted around 6c lower
than yesterday. Choice shipping lots and
good butchers and heavyweights sold right
close to steady and from that on down to
5c off on light and common packing grades.
Good heavy and butcher hogs sold mostly
front S7.25 to 7.3o; medium and heavy
mixed, I7.2iij7.30, and lighter grades on
down. There was slight change in the
market throughout trie day. Represents,

8HEEP-8upplies were liberal eonslder
lng the limited demand and values today
on mutton grades dropped 10 15c. Idaho
wethers sold at 24.70 today, against 14.90
yesterday, and other lots sold proportion
ally lower. The demand seems fair at the
prices, but trade was necessarily slow, as
buyers claim values are very high here as
compared with other markets, and sellers
take a different view.
