STIRS WHEAT TO SHORT-LIVED ACTIVITY
Oats Are Doll aad Fcatareloss and
Cloae Lower, While Provisions Are
Boosted by Packers After
Safferlaa- Slamp.
CHICAOO. June 11 Corn wn the Jack
screw to the speculative pits today. Bull
manipulator got under the coarser grain
and by lifting It rained wheat slightly. In
spite of generally bearish conditions. At
. the cloae July corn was le higher, July"
wheat wgc higher and July oats fj-Hc
lower. Provisions rallied from a sharp
lump to cloae 2c lower to 10c higher.
Corn waa momentarily weak at the open
Ing In sympathy with wheat and on the
clearing weather and aome early short
aelllng. The trade waa soon dominated,
however, by the Idea that the big bull
party had not abated any of Its prevloue
intention to boost prices. When there wna
a fair show toward recovery from the
opening depression there waa a movement
on the part of the shnrta In July that Indi
cated that they thought Is best to suffer
losses now rather than later. An attempt
to cover a hlg line as the prlrea advanced
acared all the little fellows In the face of
bearish statlatlcs. July, which opened as
low aa 63c, kept steadily advancing.
Around 64c there waa liberal unloading of
longs, who had bought near 6c. But this
stayed the upward movement but slightly.
The trade was In a position where prob
able manipulation waa more Important
than anything else. This Is expected to he
the case for some time. I'nder these cir
cumstances the pit experienced fair ac
tivity. Julv closed strong at Its high point,
lo up at 64e. Receipts, 3f9 cars, but con
tract stuff was small. Exports from the
eaboard were nothing, against 340,0H
bushels last year.
Wheat waa relieved from dull monotony
by the action In corn. Early liquidation
from the clearing weather weakened this
pit, but trade hung tire and haggled for
some time. Cables were better, indicating
cold weather In France. Statistics were
generally bullish, but crop prospects were
very good. When corn began showing Its
strength wheat developed l'B short-lived
activity. There was almost no buying bus
iness and this prevented an otherwise prob-
fble sharp rally. As It was there waa
Ittle Inclination to sell short, and July,
after opening HiffVic to He lower at "ilo
to 710 and dipping to 71tc, rallied to a
firm close. frio up at 72c. Very little
cash business was reported. Receipts, 19
cars, 4 contract: Minneapolis and Duluth
reported 443 cars, a total for the three
points of 462 cars, against 398 last week
and 470 a year ago. Primary receipts were
6o6,000 bushels, compared to 6X2.O00 bushels
last year. Seaboard clearances equaled
237.0(10 bushels. World's shipments were
7.4iO.O00 bushels, against 9,400,000 last week
Breadstuffs on passage decreased S,068,fl"0
. bushels. The visible supply decreased
z,B13,0u0 bushels.-
Oats were dull and featureless. The fair
weather prospects and the probability of
large crops offset the steady cash demand.
Receipts. 146 cars; also had a slightly bear
ish effect, being liberal. These Influences,
together with the opening slumps In wheat
Snd corn, caused a break In this pit and
uly pew sold early at 394c. The rally In
corn brought a slight recovery, but July
closed weak, a lower at fctt9Hc.
Trade In provisions was small and dull,
although prices In pork fluctuated widely.
A run of 60,000 head of hogs depressed the
Sog market and Influenced free early llqul
ation In provtBlona. Packers soon came to
the support, however and boosted pricea
harply. There waa aome talk, that the
"big fellows" were not entirely In harmony
today. July pork "f1'1 " '70 early and
closed 10c up at $17.62; July lard cloaed
unchanged at $10.20 and July ribs 2Vie lower
at $10.87H., , ,
Estimated recelpta tomorrow: Wheat,
45 cars; corn, 370 cars; oats, 206 cars; hogs,
' 23,000 head.

KEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS.
Few Prominent Stocks Advance, bat
Galas Only Partially Retained.
NEW YORK, June 11-The character of
today s stock market remained the same
as that of last week. There were opera
tions for a rise In a few prominent stocks,
put they were not aggressively pursued and
left no definite net results.
St. Paul, Missouri Pacific, Union Pacific,
Cansdlan Pacific and the Atchisons were
the most largely dealt in. It will be seen
that none of these saved as much as a
point of net gain on the day, although
Canadian Pacific roae at one time 1 over
Saturday and fit. Paul 1.
A number of the minor granger stocks
were lifted at different times and the Chi
cago c Northwestern stocks both made 8
points advance. Late In the day, after the
Indifference of the general market to this
leadership was demonstrated, there was an
advance In the readings. This proved
equally inefficacious and the market closed
dull and easy, considerably below the best.
The movement In the western stocks,
while obviously professional, seemed based
on assumption of a favorable outcome for
the corn crop and on the argument of
probable dividend Increases. Nobody as
sumes that the Missouri Paclflu dividend
this week will be changed from the 2
per cent semi-annual rate and the heavy
outlays being made by Union Pacific are
against the presumption of a present In
crease. But the example of the Chicago &
Northwestern increase is an influential
one and affects especially St. Paul.
The buying of thla group of stocks at
the opening was sufficient to carry up the
price In the face of rather heavy London
selling. Induced by snxlety over the Illness
of the king of England. The leaders of
the campaign for the advance profess to
feel assurance that the July 1 settlements
will bs effective without any stringency of
money.
Last year the' money market became act
ive about this time and at the close of the
month call money ran up to 25 per cent
and prices In the stock market collapsed.
During July of last year the difficulties in
the money market continued and their
effect upon the atock market waa aggra
vated by the damage to the corn and the
steel strike. Between June 22 and July 27
there was a contraction of over $46,0uO,0"0
In the loan account of tha banks and It
was not until the last of July that the
banks began to expand their loans again,
after large receipts of cash from the In
terior and from subtreaaury disburse
ments. The foreign trade statement for
May Just issued shows a decrease in ex
ports of upward of $22,000,000, showing that
the exports of manufactures fell somewhat
below those of May last year. In addition
to the heavy decrease in agricultural prod
ucts. For eleven months In the fiscal year the
trade balance In favor of thla country Is
thus reduced nearly $168,000,000 below that
for the corresponding period of last year.
The Industrial department of the stock
list was generally heavy. United States
Steel stocks were slightly depressed by the
making permanent of the Injunction
against the stock conversion ' and bond
Issue plan pending the appeal to the up
per court.
There was a fair demand for bonds and
prices were firm. Total salea, par value,
$2,466,000. United States 2s coupon declined
2 per cent and the old 4s advanced
per cent on the last call.
The following are the dosing prices on
the New York Stock exchange:

CATTLE Included in the number re
ported today were twenty-seven cars going
inrougn 10 me norxnwest ranges. Besides
these, there were several loads ot grasa
beef and butcher stock and a fair number
of etockers and feeders, leaving tew beef
cattle on sale.
Beef steers were In moderate sunnlv and
the demand was also rather limited. De
cent dry lot grades soltf quite freely at
steady prices, while there was a rather
weak reeling to tne trade in a-rass and
common shortfed grades. There was noth
ing toppy received in tne way of beef
steers.
The situation In the market for rows
and heifers shows no material change from
tnat 01 last weex. uooa mitcner stork
moved reasonably freely at fully stesdy
flaures. Thin, graaay grades were In
rather pooi demand and the trend of prices
was lower.
Bulla, stars and veals sold In much the
same notches as last week, with the supply
jusi aDout onser. oy ine aemanu.
Htocxera ana leeaers movea stow y at
weak to lower prices unless particularly
choice In Quality. Unless very desirable,
stock cattle are hardly wanted and values
tend lower. Stock cows snd heifers were
also slow sellers at weakening prices,
