WHY VOLCANOES BLOW OUT
Professor Kemp of Columbia Discusses the
Heat and Energy of tie Earth.
TREMENDOUS PRESSURE IN THE INTERIOR
Causes Which Drought Aboat St.
Pierre's Itestrnetlow awd Laid
Waste Much of the Island
of St. Ylaeent.
The recent volcanic outbreaks In the
West Indiea have aroused great Interest In
this particular form through which the In
terior heat and energy of the earth mani
fest themselves, and have raised questions
of a scientific nature In the minds of a
great many who had not previously given
them much attention. These questions are
not only attractive, but direct Investigation
of them Involves some elements of danger
and they are, withal, a bit uncanny.
All that we know in a general way about
volcanoea and their attendant earthquakes
been accumulated by patient observa
tion of both active and extinct cones and
by interpretation of the observations In ac
cordance with sound principles. Geology
In this particular does ua all great service
because it brings to our aid In connection
with the outbreaks in the Lesser Antilles
the results of much careful work In all
quarters ot the globe, lasting through cen
turies and performed by many observers.
If,
then, we briefly state the order of events
the West Indies we may afterward see
how well they conform to a few general
principles, which have been eatablisbed in
this manner.
Mount Pelee, in Martinique, and La Sou-
frlere, in St. Vincent, have been recognised
as old craters since their discovery, but it
Is a long time, ninety years In fact, since
the latter was active. A lake even accu
mulated in one of the craters. Gradually
In the early part of May there were symp
toms of reviving activity. Earthquake
shocks were felt In their neighborhood,
clouds of steam and other gases started up
from the old venta and showers of dust and
stone were Mown into the air, because the
vapors burst forth with explosive violence.
As the days passed the violence increased
and soon an explosion of special efficiency
in Mount Pelee tapped off a flood of molten
rock which coursed In a destructive tide
down the mountain. A day or two after
ward a furious outburst cast the hot dust
and clouds of lava over St. Pierre and ut
terly destroyed It.
On St. Vincent, at this writing, dust and
larger fragments and gases have been the
main emissions ana have caused the prin
cipal loss of life and damage. It is re
ported that the bottom of the sea has sunk
several fathoms near Georgetown and that
thus a considerable dislocation of the crust
Is indicated.
Islands liaised From Sea's Depths.
All the Lesser Antilles from Saba through
the Grenadines and Grenada are of vol
canic region and they hall from the depths
of the aca. We have no means of knowing
their exact structure, but from our fuller
knowledge ot Vesuvius, as shown in the
accompanying diagram, we can draw a
pretty close inference.
Vesuvius rests upon the following da
scribed foundation, aa has been shown by
deep borings in Naples and by the moun
tain rldgo of St. Angelo farther southeast.
The lowest atratum la limestone ot un
determined thickness. The volcano occa

then 700 feet of calcareous aandstona.
On the top of the largest named (first aa
a submarine vent and apparently in about
600 feet of water) tha young volcano ntillt
up a great layer of dust and fragments WO
feet tht.k. Throughout this material are
found marine shells. When the 60(1 feet
had been accumulated the vent had risen
bove the water and was able to construct
the old crater known to the ancients. But
before human records begin the activity
eased and at 700 II. C, the cone was cold
nd dead. Suddenly in the year 63 A. D.,
it showed algns of activity and sixteen
yeari after the usual warnings it broke
out explosively in 79 A. D., and burled up
Pompeii with lta thousands of inhabitants.
From that time to the present it has been
qul-t only for comparatively short periods.
In much the same way the conea and
Islands of the Lesser Antilles must bava
een reared. During periods of activity
beds of fine and coarse fragments of vol
canic rock have gathered tn great quantity.
Floods of lava and large maases Intruded
Into fissures have bound them Into a aolld
ggregnte; islands and island cones have
been raised above the sea until the present
conditions have been reached. '
Cause of Krnptlons.
Now, why do volcanoea break out? A
number of points are Involved la an answer
to this question. We know in tha Srst
place that the earth grows hotter as wa
descend and at rates that have been meas
ured in deep mines and bore-boles as shown
tn the accompanying table: .

If we select an average rate of about
ixty feet of descent for an Increase ot
one degree Fahrenheit and carry It out
for twenty-flve miles, we reach a tempera
ture of 2,200 degrees, which la Just about
that of ordinary molten lava. Coupling
this with the facta known about volcanoes.
it waa natural for early observers to coa-
clude that the Interior of tha earth wa'
molten and that mankind lived oa a crust
twenty-five miles thick or more.
But the astronomers and mathematlclana
soon reminded the geologists that tha eartb
la a rapidly rotating body which Is sub
ject to the deforming effects of centri
fugal force and to the attractions of tha
moon and other heavenly bodies which are
believed to cause the oceanic tides. They
made the point that tha earth behaves Ilka
a body aa rigid aa steel. They therefore
rejected tie conception ot a fluid core aa
Impossible.
Earth's Interior Preaaarv.
Next mathematlclana attacked tha prob
lem on a lot her aide by reminding tha
geologists that the interior portlona of tha
globe must support tbo outer portlona, and
that therefore the interior Is subject to
great pressure as tha following table by
Prof. R. 3. Woodward showa:

Iron work and metal and other sub
stances melt at well known temperaturea
under the ordinary conditions of dally life,
but if we aubject them to great pressure)
the melting points rlae. Hence with re
gard to the rock of the interior when It la
under great pressure it doea not melt at
2.2P0 degreea. We cannot aay Just at what
temperature It fuses, but It la quite likely
that the increase of temperature may never
overcome the increase of pressure. It fol
lows that the earth la aolld clear through.
But volcanoea must derive tbelr lava
from some aourca and so wa bava coma to
believe in the exiatenca ot locat reser
voirs of molten rock underneath tha vol
canic districts.
Propwlslve Force.
The distribution of volcanoea la evidently
along great lines of upheaval In tha earth
and tbey and earthquakea are connected .
with fractures which penetrate tha crust.
Soma force is, however, necessary to bring
the lava to the aurface. If the part of tha
earth which la one aide of a great fracture
slnka It may force the lava In tha underly
ing reservoirs to rise through tha flaaurea
and we are reminded ot the reporta whlcb
state that the sea bottom baa aunk off 8U
Vincent. Gravity la tbua tha propulsive
force.
Others, however, lay emphasla on tba
vast amount of vapor held tn tba lava at
such high pressure and temperature that
It bursts with inconceivable violence and
ascends In columns miles high In tba air
when once It reaches the aurface. They
therefore trace tha expulsion of tha lava
to lta accumulation and final break for
tha upper air, bringing tba lava with It la
an Irresistible, tumultuous rush. There ara
serloua objections to the old belief that
this vapor la aea water or any other form .
of aurfaca water which percolatea down- :
ward, but It Is regarded by our moat re
liable observers aa having been In tba
rocks from tha time In which they first
became conatltuenta of the eartb.
Volcanoea are shifted from time to time.
Aa the geologists reckon time our western
atatea have not long been free from them.
Mr. J. 8. Dlller of tha United States ceo
logical survey baa found ona sear Laaaao'S
