KW YORK STOCKS AXD BODS. Early ActlrKy la Short-Lived and Market Quits Stagnant. NEW YORK, June 6 -The dealings In stocks dropped back again to near the low level of activity for the year and the day's r.et changes are narrow and unimportant. So far as there are gains they are the residue ot a little spurt in prices wnn which the day started. It was caused by a rumor that the coal strike had b-. i set- led, which came bv the wav of London, with a light volume of cabled orders to buy. The principal buvlns- came from yester day's short sellers snd as soon aa the rumnr was authoritatively denied the buying movement fell away and the market fill bark Into Its state of neglect. There was a sham rallv In Canadian Pa cific on a resumption of the pool operations in that stock and this movement had some sympathetic Influence on the rest of the list. Suaar at one time recovered all of Its quarterly dividend on the score of an ad vance In price In some grades of sugar. None of these movements were maintained. The latter market was Inclined to depres sion and there seemed a feeling of resigna tion to a season of dullness. The strength of today s corn marKet and he reports which accompanied It of exces sive rains and floods In the southwest were a reminder of the possibilities of future mishaps to the corn crop and an Incentive to caution against speculative commit ments on that score. The bank statement promises to be color less. There have been sufficient receipts on balance from the Interior to about offset the week's $2,0f0,f00 loss on sub-treasury operations. There is no Indication of any substantial reduction Jn the loan account of the ba.tks and some Institutions report an increase In that Item. A reaction 'n foreign exchange was viewed with satisfac tion and relieved the apprehension caused by the week's advance of a disposition to withdraw credits. The market closed stag nant. The bond market was also less active and the movement of prices narrow and Irregular. Total sales, par value. $2.n5O00O. United States bonds were all unchanged on the last call. The market today was fairly active on anything desirable and not much change from yesterday was noticed In the prices paid. Packers seem to be anxious for the good to choice beef steers today, and as a result the few on sale changed hands In good season at Just about steady prices. When It came to the medium and common steers the market waa slow, the tair: as usual, but still there was not enough change from yesterday In the prices paid to be worthy of mention. The cow market was also Just about steady. Good dry lot cows were easily dls nnaed of. but the medium and common grades sold very unevenly and as compared with tne nrsi or lasi weea anyming out the very beat grades are right around 50c lower. The cows showing grass are In a good many cases selling worse than that, but such kinds bring such uneven prices that It la hard to tell what they are worth. Packers claim that grass cows are killing out in bad shape, and for that reason they are pounding the market down aa rapidly as possible. Bulls veal calves and stags all sold In Just about yesterday's notches. There are only a few stockers and feed ers on sale, and In fact there were not enough to make a test of the market. It was evident, however, that buyers were not anxloua for supplies, as the close of the week Is st hand and not much demand from the country la expected the rest of this week.
