' Tta'aaater' Strike Affrrla
Hoc Prtdicti,
CHICAGO, May 29 Bull speculators In
rains who figured confidently on a rally
In prices after yesterdays serious slump,
came to grief again today. For a time they
took hold of the bull arguments and up
held the pits, but made-to-order weather
and Indications that the farmer was runn
ing his old holdings to market pushed all
prices down to a new level. July wheat
closed c lower, July corn He depressed
and July oats H'Sc down. Provisions
closed 2S! lower to Vic higher.
Most of the Influences in the whest pit
favored sellera. support from a strong
quarter and the comparative firmness of
the foreign market k pt prices fairly firm
for the first hour. Cables showed a little
decline, but were not bearish. For a time
.corn helped wheat, but It soon became
apparent that the beam had the situation
In hand again. The weather In the win
ter country was warm, with rains, and In
the northwest clear and warmer. He.irs
laid great stress on this argument and
Were thriving on crop prospects. Receipts
were Increasing. In the way of novelty
car of Texas new wheat was shipped In
and on Us harvesting the southwest sold.
No additional export business csme to the
relief and everything slumped. July opened
H'oWc to a shade lower at "2SW72c and
dipped to 72c, closing weak and c down
at "2&"2l4c Ixcal receipts were 21 cars,
1 of contract grade. Mlnneapollsand lu-
j luth reperted 20 cars, making a total for
the three points of 224 cars, against 121
last week. A year ago the day was a
holiday. Primary rccelpta were 814.0OU
bushels. Seaboard clearances In wheat
and flour equaled 370,000 bushels.
Everyone with Interests In corn was
alert at the opening to see what stand
the farmera would take on the Chicago
hlds sent out last flight. The country
again let go of. between 300.000 and 4i0.'i0
bushels. Cables, however, showed Indif
ference to our slump yesterday and the
big bull crowd supported fairly well for
time. This kept July Arm early to Its
yesterdays closing price. Then came ths
advice that the receipts tomorrow would
be 2H6 -cars. Trade turned very bearish,
bears sold short and when the small sup
port of the Wall street crowd was taken
away price dropped lc. Good crop re
ports keep coming to market and weather
reports are a good aa can be desired.
The cash demand was only fair. July
opened a shade higher to Hc lower at
3o to 2.c, and slumped to 62c, and closed
weak and r under at 62M,(g14c Receipts
were excessive at 224 cars.
The only feature to the trade in oat
wss the nervousness, accompanying the
"May-July" delivery, small trade and
In this option caused fluctuations of lc.
Otherwise the market waa dull and un
changed. July, new, sold from 3'c on
the weakness lit the other pits to 36,0
and closed weak and VoNo down at 3674c.
Receipts were liberal at 229 cars.
The strike of the teamsters of the big
Chicago packing houses began to have a
bearish effect on provisions today. At
- the opening price were strong on a run
of hoga 13,000 head under the estimate.
Packers manipulated the pit for higher
prices and then unloaded lard and ribs on
tha crowd. This, together with the grain
weakness and the strike, lost the pit all
Its early gains and brought net recessions
In some options. July pork closed 2Wo
down at $17.06, July lard a shade lower
' at lio 14 and July ribs 24c up at 19.66.
Estimated receipt tomorrow: Wheat, 20
cars; corn, 295 cars; oats, IDS car; hogs,
30.000 head.. x
Tomorrow being Decoration day and a
legal holiday, there will be no business
von the Board of Trade.

NEW - YORK ' STOCKS AND BOXD9.
Reading Lead Activity-Had Market
Tone Is Firm. ' '
NEW YORK, May 2.-The new commit
ments In the stock market today were of
entirely Insignificant proportion, owing to
me tear or possible developments or tne
triple holiday. There was some closing up
of open accounts, however, and as thee
proved to be mostlv on the short sloe, tno
tone of the market was rather firm In
sympathy with the leaders. The move
ment In the general list was listless and
very narrow.
The leader of the market In point of ac
tivity was Reading, and Its advance of
nearly 2 points was attributed In some de
gree to the demand from shorts to cover
In the fear that a strike settlement might
be reached between now and next Monday.
The Immediate news today did not favor
such a presumption.
resident Fowler of the Ontario ft west
ern emphasized an emphatic denial of re
ports that concessions to the strikers were
contemplated on the part of the operators.
The reported utterance of F. P. Sargent
of the arbitration committee of the Civic
Federation that he believed a sympathetic
strike was probable among the soft coal
miners was given some attention, but this
did not reassure traders short of the mar
ket sufficiently to Induce them to remain
uncovered for an Interval of three days.-
The advance In Canadian Pacific was
also renewed, in spite of denials oT re
ported buying foxcontrol in behalf of
Northern Securities Interest.
An Interesting feature of the week's cur
rency movement Is the shipment to Canada
of some $2,000,000 by Canadian branch
banks, which Is supposed to be due to
transactions In Canadian Pacific. Notwith
standing this movement and the absorp
tion of nearly a million dollars on sub
treasury operations, the receipts of cash
from the interior on balance are estimated
thus far this week at nearly $3,000,000, thus
promising a strong bank statement for
next Saturday.
The promise today of the British parlia
mentary leader of a statement on next
Monday concerning the peace negotiations
was regarded In speculative circles as
tantamount to an announcement of peace.
Today's bond market shared In the dull
ness of the stock market and the closing
waa semi-stagnant below the best. Total
ales bonds, par value. $1,123,000.
The following are the closing price on

CATTLE There was a light run of cattle
here today, so that the supply for the week
to date is considerably smaller man ror
the same day ot last week or of last year.
The better grades of all kinds of cattle
did not show much of any change from yes
terday, but the tendency of prices on com'
mon grade was undoubtedly downward.
While the beef steer market could not
be quoted active, still anything aieslrable
sold without trouble at lust about steady
prices. As high as 17.30 waa paid for a load
of long yearlings that only averaged 1,167
pounds. When it came to the medium and
common klnda the market was slow and
sellers found it a hard matter to get what
they considered steady prices in ail cases.
Practically everything, though, was dis
poned of In good season.
The cow market was rather slow all
around and except in a few cases the
tendency of prices wa downward all
around. Some ot the very best grades
brought just about yesterday' price, but
aside from those the market waa lower,
The decline waa uneven, owing to the fact
that the tendency has been downward for
some time because of the break at other
markets. Sales were made here today that
looked 10c or even 15c lower than the same
kinds sold for yesterday. But In spite of
that fact the prices being paid on thla
market are well In line with the quotation
at other point.
Good to choice bulls, veal calve and
tags all commanded steady prices today.
but where the quality waa not up to the
proper standard tne market wa slow and
weak.
There were only Just a few bunches of
stockers and feeder on sale today, so the
market did not snow mucn 01 any change
from yesterday. tne aemano rrom the
country so far thl week ha been noth
ing extra and for that reason speculator
are not very anxtou for the commoner
kind. Yesterday there were 14 cars of cat
tle shipped to the country. Representative
sale:

HOOS There wa another liberal run of
hogs here today, so that the receipts for
the four das of this week are consid
erably in excess of the same days of isat
week and also or last year, ine iibie
above will show the exact ilgure.
Today s market wss all tlin way rrnm
steady to 10c hither It waa. In fact, what
Is called a hump-back market. On thal
start hogs sold at just about steady prices,
but as the morning advanced the demand
seemed to be more active and the market
strengthened 11 n. Alter the first round
hogs were selling generally a nickel higher
and then o'gloc higher. The bulk of the
offerings was disposed of In good sear-on.
but some hugs that arrived late tn in
forenoon did not fare as well. Packers
seemed to be pretty well filled up, and as a
result they did not care to buy the late
arrivals unless they could get them for
less money. The close then wss Slow ana
weak. The ajallty of the offerings was
just about the same as yesterday.
in most ot tne gooa, nesvy wrigm noes
sold from $7.15 to 37.25. while tho medium
weight sold from 17. (4 to 6..10. ana tne
lighter loads went from 7.06 down. To
day's advance carries the market back to
about where It was the latter part of last
week, the loss of Monday now being en
tirely regained. Representative sales:
