NEBRASKA BEATS CREIGHION
Snappy Game Won by Clean Work of Team
from Lincoln.
LOCALS' ERRORS COME AT WRONG TIME
Loose IMai lea for a Couple of Innings
Cilves VlBlfnra a Big Lead
and Lornl t an eer
iatrh t p.
The Crelghtoo university base ball team
was completely defeated yesterday by tbe
university of Nebraska ty the srore of
8 to 3. This was ere of the biggest borne
contests of the year and the Creighton
men, though they knew that tbey bad an
other chance with Nebraska at Lincoln,
were determined to win thl game and
show their patrons Just bow fast an aggre
gation they are. And an excellent attend
ance they had. Nevtr has an amateur
contest brought out a better rrowd. The
main body of students and 100 or more'
visitors were on hand when the first con
test between tbe second team and th
Havena aggregation tookTlace. but by the
time t'mplre Malone called the game fully
1.500 energetic and entbusiaBtlc fans filled
the bleachers and reserved sections. In ad
dition to the usual liberal share of women
were three er four parties of convent girls,
a ho looked very chic ln their black and
while costumeo, and also a delegation from
Brownell Hall.
Creighton took the field and the manner
ln which Welch retired Hood, Bell and
Rhodes ln one, two, three order set the
rooters on fire. Lynch, the first Creigbton
man up, caused an explosion by getting a
two-bagger from the famed LtLherby.
Lawler sacrificed htm to third, but that was
all. Welch fanned. Creigbton got his base
on balls acd Clark followed Welch's ex
ample.
In tbe second inning a wild throw of
O'Kerfe to first pulled De Putron to sec
ond base: Raymond pushed him to third,
and Welch struck Letherby out and saved
the Inning when things looked very blue.
In the Creigbton half, Mlnnicus and Lynch
fanned the air ln vain; Welch mads a neat
hit for two sacks, but was unable to make
more than third before the third out.
Nebraska Scores First.
Nebraska began business in the third.
A fumble of Lawler's Disced Bender safelr
on first and pulled Rhodes to third. Then
costly and surprising muff of Foley's on
a throw irom third scored Rhodts and
Bender. Oace again was Creigbton blanked
in ltg half, and Raymond's home run, which
scored De Putron, gave Nebraska two more
runs ln the fourth. In the fifth Nebraska
found Welch and before tbe Inning closed
four mere runs wre chalked up. After
that Creighton began to give a. fine exhibi
tion of ball. Nebraska men were finished
ln one, two, three, order and tbe hitting
of Welch, Lawler and Creighton scored
tbe Omaha lads for three runs.
In general, the contest was a first-class
exhibition of collegipte ball. One thing is
certain, . the Creighton team can put up
a better article of ball than It did yester
day. Only three of Nebraa's runs were
earned. Tbe reet were obtained by the
many and unusual errors of the locals
Welch was not st his beet, and besides, be
played a very poor fielding game. Eddie
Creighton on third waa the Creighton star,
his fielding being of tbe cleanest order and
his one-hand stop of Bell's drive In the
sixth was phenomenal. Clark's base-steal
ing was worthy of mention.
For Nebraska, all were stars, and never
has Omaha seen a cleaner or snappier
playing college aggregation. Letherby
pitching was of the gilt-edge order. Four
Hires was a Creighton man firmly estab
TlBhed on third, when he would make tha
Decessary strike-outa. Raymond, Gaines
and Hood excelled at tbe stick and Doane
caught in peerless style. Infield and out
field worked like clockwork and tt la no
disgrace for any team to lose to a team
like Nebraska. However, Creighton has
better material ln itself than it showed
yesterday and undoubtedly tbe game at
Lincoln on Saturday next will be closer
and better. Score:
NEBRASKA.
