Corn was held firm by bullish manipulation moat of the day, but succumbed to the pressure. At the clone July wheat waia lower; July corn. HS-'ic down, and July oats, a ahade lower. Provisions' closed 687V4o to 12l0 depressed. It waa a dull day In wrhea until shortly before the elope. Early In the day there waa some small strength on better cables, confirmation of good eotport. business yes terday and light receipts. July opened a shade higher to unchanged at 74Cg74Vc to 74o and went up to 74Wc Kansas City waa weak. Jn the last hour oC business the bears took advantage of an apparent lack of energy In the wheat market and put on pressure. Liquidation brought out some stop-loss orders; there waa mo export sup- Sort and prices slumped to- a weak close, ulv, a? down, at 73'fc73Hc. Ixrcal rncelnta were IS cars. 1 of contract grade; Minneapolis and Dul ath reported 103 cars, making a total ror i.je inree points of 11. cars, aanlnst 109 last; week and 230 a year ago. Primary receipts were 189,000 busneifl, compared witn zaavruv ousneis imki year. Seaboard clearances Jn wheat and flour equaled 374,000 bushels. Argentine shipments were 1,104,000 bushels, against 624.000 bushels last week. Corn ruled the atronaest of 'the pits until wheat broke. Country offerings were smaller and cash business was good. Trade early was active and .Jiere was fair buying at the advance. ' The outside In terest in the market was V'rry small, ai. thouah the southwest sent In some bullish reports on the cash situation. Wheat had a weakening effect aa the market grew 'dull. After several noura or attunes ioi Inwail th enrlv Activity. ITiuldatton set In and prices ell oft rharpiy. July sold an high aa 624c, but closed weak, MiWc depreased, at 61"c. Receipts were only i7 cars. The oats pit waa the center of more Interest than foe several days past. The sreneral tone most of the day waa strong. but trade was light, and the weakness In other grains worked against the eariy advances and the close showed a net loss. Indications today were that shorts In May optluna will be equeesed by the biff bull bouses. Mav was Dushed UD to 44c for a time, although It closed at 43He. The demand was fair and offering light until just before the close, when uiey Decame more liberal. July sold at 3"He nnd closed steady, a shade lower, at 37Kif33'c. tie ceiDts were 161 cars. Provisions had too narrow a. market to allow of the general liquidation that was forced by longa unloading. The result was a decided slumu after a' very tlrm start. Hogs were steady and there was ome small early support. AVhen the packers, however, had pushed' the price up a little, stuff was thrown, overboard . and the close was weak. July pork closed x32Sc lower, at JiWOQ'n.OZtt: JuCy lard, W 7Ho down, at $10. 4, and July ribs, t'tf'Vic lower, at $9.67V. Market Stagnation Prevented Only by Strength la Specials. NEW YORK. Mav 23. Today's stock market was dull to the point of stagnation. The higher prices In London Induced an Improvement st the opening here, but It was lost through mere Inncllon. Until the last hour there was hardly enough motive power to show any direction in the move ment, with tne exception of soma special stocks. There was milt a demand for National Lead stocks, due to the expectation that the company would benefit from a proposed combination In an allied branch of the trade. The American Linseed stocks rose on rumors of a combination of the vegeta ble oil interests. The firmness of Amalgamated, Anaconda nd Smeltlnr was due to the continued re ports of widening demand for copper both here ana anroaa. There was a renewal of the recent strength In Canadian Pacific, but when the advance reached 14 It halted. Pacific Mail's -polnt rise was unexplained. The George A. Fuller stocks made wide dvances and the New lork puuuc utili ties and Colorado Fuel developed late trength, the kilter rising 2. The appear ince of the preliminary figures of the week's movement of currency awakened more animation than at any tlmo during the day. Outside of those stocks already mentioned the effect was not notable, ex cept in St. Paul, Union Pacific and Atchi son. The currency figures Indicate a net gain by the banks on the Interior movement of nearly 15.000, which Is supplemented bv a gain on subtreasury operations of I5f,0i0. New York exchange at Chicago fell back today to near par, compared with 60c premium early In the week. There was transferred through the subtreasury 120,000 to New Orleans, following tha like amount transferred yesterday. There was a can yesterday for a 25 per cent Installment on subscriptions to the steamship merger, which calls for $12,500,000. of which about 60 per cent Is payable In New Y'ork. The bond market was dull, but firm. Total sales, par value, $2,290,000. United States bonds were an uncnangea on me last call. CATTLE There was a very light run of cattle here this morning, but still the re ceipts for the week are a little In excess of last week, but there Is not much differ ence as compared with the same week of last year. About the same conditions pre vailed on the market as yesterday, that Is, good stuff sold at strong prices, but com mon kinds were neglected. There was about the usual proportion of beef steers included In the offerings this morning, and the quality was good. As high as $7.20 was paid this morning for several bunches, as will be seen from the sales below. The demand for the good to choice grades was quite active and every thing answering to that description was disposed of in good season at steady to strong prices. The common kinds did not move us readily and did not bring in most cases over Steady prices. Everything, though, was disposed of In good season. There were only a few cows and heifers on sals this morning, and the same as was the case with beef steers, the better grades were In active demand at steady to strong prices. A bunch sold as high as $6 25, but they were of good quality. There did not seem to be much of any Improvement in the demand or the prices paid for the com mon to medium cattle. As a general thlfig they sold in Just about yesterday's prices. Bulls, veal calves and stags also sold freely at fully steady prices where the quality was good, but common stuff was more or less neglected. ... There were very few stockers and feed ers In the yards today, and anything oe slrable sold at good, steady pricea. As the end of the week Is at hand buyers were more cautious than usual about tak Ina the common stuff. Yesterday there were about 16 cars of feeders shipped to the country. The hogs began mov. Ing toward the scales fairly early, so that It was not long before the bulk of the receipts was out of first hands. The great est strength was, of course, on the better weight hogs. Toward the last end of the market the feeling did not seem to be quite as good owing to the reports from Chicago showing that the market closed weak at that point. The bulk of the good weight hoas sold today from $7.10 to $7.25, and the medium weights sold from $1.00 to $7.10, while the light stuff went from $7 down. Representative sales; No. At. So. Pt.
