Deeper Disconcertion Over Coal Strike and Market L'ncertala NEW YORK. May 22-Today's stock market was extremely Irregular through out and closed with that tendency rather emphasised. The same stocks changed tneir course in some cases and the pre' vailing disposition of the speculation waa hard to diatinguish and was in fact much confused and mixed. The anxiety over the coal strike was rather deeper on account of the Implied threat of the engineers, firemen and pump runner in the anthracite mines to come out unless an eight-hour day Is granted them. This would bring the struggle to an scute atage, as the safety of the mines is dependent upon this work being done. Some of the steel stocks were heavy In tone as a result of the effect of the coal strike, which Is beginning to be felt In that Industry. This did not prevent a jump of 10 points In Lackawanna and a late spurt In Dela ware & Hudson, The culmination of the recent extended rise In Canadian Paclttc and Its sharp reaction naturally had some sympathetic effect upon the rest of the maraei. There was no need to account for the setback any more than there has been to account for the rise and the movement seemed to be due purely to speculative profit-taking. The late break In the stock to below 133 helped to unsettle the close. A break of 6 points In Ann Arbor pre ferred probably was the result of the set tlement of control of that property. The United States Rubber stocks suf fered from the poor financial showing of the company for the past year. 8t. Paul offered a strong leadership for the grain carriers, but it was not followed witn avidity and union paclno was rather persistently heavy, offsetting the effect of St. Paul's advance of 2 points. The news from the crop region was conalu ered encouraging. Another center of strength was Amal gamated copper. The gains In the Ameri can Smelting stocks and In National Lead were allied In this, all by the outgrowth of the growing 'tendency or raw copper, ine meeting or support ior sliver is benefit to the smeltlnir stocks. The speculative Interest In small rail roads keeps alive and was fostered today by the rumors of the acquisition of the coiumDUs, snawnee & nooning in tne in terest of the Wabash, authoritatively de nted and of a new combination of llarri man railroads, including a number of small sales, for which no official sanction could be obtained. The money market continued quite easy. with call loans ruling at 4 per cent or lower and with the sterling exchange market showing no disposition to advance again.
