HEW YORK STOCKS AXD BOKDB.
Anlsaatloa Make Appearance Today
aad Stocks -Score Recovery.
NEW YORK. May 20. Prices of stocks
scored quite a substantial recovery today
and ended pretty near the top level and
steady. There was a much more cheerful
feeling with regard to the outlook for
values and rather urgent- pressure to sell
ws th feature yesterday.
The feature waa seen among high-priced
stocks, but this gave way to sudden re
coveries. International Power recovered t
point of Its 18-polnt . break yesterday and
there were- wide gains scored by the elec
tric and express stocks, which were notable
sufferer yesterday. There was not much
news on which to base the rise.
Sentiment wa favorably affected by the
large absorptions of, United States Steel
at rising prices. f
This soothed the anxieties which were
caused by yesterday's rumors that a for
midable bear party had been formed In the
stock- as an outgrowth of the criticism of
the stock conversion and bond Issue plan.
The notable strength of Canadian Pa
cific and it subsidiary roads, Minneapolis,
St. Paul A Sault Bte. Marie and Duluth,
South Shore A Atlantic also had a notable
sympathetic effect on the whole, market.
This movement began abroad before the
opening hsre and was not explained by any
peel ft c new. ,
London was a buyer on a considerable
scale after the holiday trade and the con
fident predictions - were heard that peace
would be declared at an early day in
South Africa. . - i
The format announcement of the terms
for the taking over jointly by Louisville t
Nashville and Soutnern railway of the
Chicago. Indianapolis & Louisville stock
In return for 4 per cent bond wa
chiefly reflected In the price of Louisville.
The presence in the Wall street district
of Secretary Easley of the Civic federation
and his consultation with Important repre
sentative of the anthracite gives rise to
conjecture that measures were In progress
for the settlement of the anthracite miners'
strike. Wall street opinion remains con
fident that a settlement lie within the
reach at almost any time.
There was also much less apprehension
today of a spread of the labor trouble
Into the bituminous coal nelds which was
considered a formidable prospect yester
day. The buying of stock by London was a
factor In the easier tone of foreign ex
change which relieved the feeling yesterday
that a prompt return of exchange to the
gold export level was to follow the relax
ation of money rates. .
Sugar was helped by the reports of n
agreement upon which a Cuban reciprocity I

firm on the better conditions reported In
the copper trade. The market closed
quiet and steady. ,
Bonds were dull but were about steady.
Total sales, par 'value, $2,419,000. United
States refunding and new 4a were'tt per

CATTLE RecelDts of cattle were llarht
today for a Tuesday and the number
actually on sale-was extremely small. There
were torty-aix car ot Texas cattle in
cluded In the arrivals that were billed
through and were not offered on the mar
ket.' o there were lee than 100 car on
le. Buyers seemed to be anxious for
supplies and a a result they were out
any and the general market ruled active
and steady to strong on desirable grade.
Offering included the usual proportion
of beef steers and the quality wa again
good, a la shown by the fact that there
.were a good many bunches good enough
to sell around $7, and a high as $7.20 wa
Said. It was a good, actlye market en all
eelrable grade, and the price paid could
afely be quoted steady to strong, as com
pared with yesterday. The less desirable
grade, of course, did not change hands
quite as freely aa the choice bunches, but
still they sold for fully aa much as they
did yesterday. Practically everything waa
disposed of in good eaaon and the market
cloaed strong. "
The demand tor cow stun: was aiso quit
liberal and the market ruled fairly active
and - ateady to strong. Th strength was
not confined to the better grades, and In
fact the market seemed to be rather un
even, so that while some sales looked con
siderably s'ronger others looked only about
steady. The situation, though, could best
be aescnoea oy cnuuig tas uuaraet sieauy
to strong.
Bulls, veal calves and stags also com
manded steady to strong price where the
quality w at all good.
r In the yaroa, so inn tne maraei was
not very thoroughly tested. The few sale
that were made, though, looked fully
.... There were only Ave -cars of cattle
shipped to the country yesterday. ; Repre

HOGS There wa S good liberal run of
hogs here today, ao that an Increase In
the receipts for the two days this week ss
compared with the same days of last week
Is noted. As compared with the same days
ot last year, however, there is a Dig ce-
crease.
The market today could be quoted
steady to 6c lower. Packers started In to
buy their droves a nickel lower than yea
terday, owing to the 6o decline reported
In Chicago. Seller, however, were holding
ror more money, so tnst trading on the
start was rather slow. Buyers Anally bid
a little better, so thst In a good many
cases hogs sold at about steady prices.
The market was not particularly active at
any time, but still practically everything
on sale was disposed of In good season.
Ths quality of the offering today waa
nothing extra and prime heavyweight
were very scarce. The bulk of the better
weight hogs sold from $7.16 to $7,25 and the
medium weights went mostly from $7.00 to
$7.10 and the light stuff sold from $7.00
