1 THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: MONDAY, MAY 10, 1002. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Listless Interert in Closing Session of Week on Eo&rd of Trade. PRICES Of CEREALS SHOVED BY BEARS Weak Spots Prevail In Wheat, Cora how Late I nsteadlnees, Oata Dall and Provision Hassle Idly and Break Even. CHICAGO, May 17. Grain trade round little of Interest In the closing session of the week on the Hoard of Trade today. The Influencing factor" were not suf ficiently marked to Induce good specula tion, save Rome weakness In corn late In the day, that started a short lived spurt of activity. The pits closed with July wheat He lower, July corn Hft'fcc lower and July oata VqV.c down. Provisions haggled Idly all' day and closed a shade lower to a shade higher. There was both weak and strong spots In wheat during the morning, but the ad vantage favored the former. The local crowd was Inclined to sell. Weather was Ideal for crops save In the northwest, where continued rains were still retard ing spring seeding. Advices from Mani toba crops stated that seeding had been done and that there was still 20.00O.flu0 bushels of wheat on hand. Prices went He under Chicago, whereas a week ago it was lc higher. Liverpool sent no cables. London was weaker. A little better ex port demand was reported and strength ened the pit for a time. Early In the ses sion the spread between July and Sep tember widened to Smc, but the crowd be came uneasy over the possibilities of an oversold September market, and covered some accounts. Fluctuations were narrow. July opened H'S'ie down to unchanged at 744o to IVyiTbc and sold to "ac. Corn weakness depressed It to 744c but the close waa only easy, c under at H!p 74c. Receipts. 23 cars, 8 of contract grade; Minneapolis and Duluth reported 89 cars, a total for the three points of 112, against -74 last week, and 235 a year ago. Pri mary receipts, 285,000 bushels, compared to 160,000 bushels a year ago. Seaboard clearances equaled 672, UK) bushels. Conditions In corn were similar to those In wheat, weather fair, prospects of larger receipts, etc. The early market was fairly steady, but Kansas City and St. 1oula turned weak late and gave as the reaaon the much freer offerings from the coun try. Acceptances of Chicago bids by the country were bearish. July sold down from H1HC to 61c, and on a little sup port by the leading bull house reacted somewhat, but closed weak and SUbic lower at lHc. Receipts, 40 cars. Oats were dull and listless. Some buying by the leading bull In May options strengthened July new stuff. On tho in fluence of the other grains and fair re ceipts, prices eased a trifle. The cash demand was still fair. July fluctuated only and closed So lower at 36c. Receipts were 138 cars. Provisions showed remarkably light ac tion owing to the light run of hogs at the yards. Offerings were liberal, especially In lard, but the buying was limited, and prices showed almost no changes. July pork closed unchanged at $17.35. July lard a shade up at 10.3o&l0.32H and July ribs a shade lower at J7.Sk). Estimated receipts Monday: Wheat, 30 cars; corn, 76 cars; oats, 146' cars; hogs, H8.0 head. Hogs for the week, 146,000 head. The leading futures ranged as follows: Articles.! Open. Hlgh. Low. Close. Mav 17. Prices made a decided recession In the first hour of to day's short session because of the appre hension over the reports to maice tne an thracite miners' strike a national strike, but practically recovered after the bank statement appeared. A fall of nearly 2 points In Colorado Fuel and heavy selling of United Ststes Steel to below 40 unsettled the close and made it Irregular at declines from the rally. me selling or t nitea mates meei may have been due to fears of special damage to that industry from a possible Interrup tion to bituminous coal mining, or It may have been connected with the meeting of stockholders on Monday to ratify the con version of preferred stock and tne issue of bonds. The bank statement showed a decrease In cash of over a million where a gain of that much was expected, but this was ig nored on th heavy reduction of deposit liabilities, affected by loan contraction by which the surplus reserves were recuper ated to the extent of nearly five millions. The week's reduction of t22.9O8.100 in the loana account has only once been equaled. In' the week ending May 18. 1901, the banka reduced their loans 124,204,800. This was the week following the panic week in the stock market, when loans had been made practically without limit to check the Danlc. and when the buying to sup port the market was followed by quick liquidation after confidence was restored. me past weeks events make it clear that no such liquidation has occurred as this loan contraction would measure. The local trust companies have been large lenders all the week. Banking authorities estimate loans placed by the trust com panies as high as $20,000,000. There has been lending also on account of interior money centers. This Is without taking any account 01 the large borrowing abroad, reflected In the foreign exchange market. It Is re ported tnat there have neen large saies this week bv American holders of British consol subscriptions which have risen In lyonnon to a premium 01 1 a-10. 1 ne pro ceeds of these sales would represent, of course, actual replenishment of local money resources, Dut tne DanK s ngures must reDresent for the most part a shift ing of accommodations rather than a loan reduction. The market for bonds has grown dull and has moved In sympathy with stocks. United States 3e declined 4 and all other Issues 4 per cent below the closing call of last week. The receipts for the week show a slight Increase as compared with last week, but quite a decrease Is noted as compared with the same week of last year. ne table above wui snow tne exact figures. The bulk of the offerings all the week was made up of beef steers, and It may safely be said that the best cattle of the year arrived this week. The demand for the choice heavyweight cattle, and also for good light weights, was quite active, nd as a result prices advanced considerably. Sellers as a rule were calling the market 20( 30c higher for the week, which carries the market to the high point of the season. The top price for the year Is 87.20. which was paid on Friday for a bunch weighing 1,625 pounds. The class of csntle that sell from $6.40 down have not been In as good demand as those that sell from $6.50 up, but still they have also Improved in price to some extent, and are nearly, if not quite, back to the high time. The market as a whole has been in very satisfactory condi tion the past week, and the prices paid compared favorably with other markets. The good to choice grades of cows and heifers are also higher than they were a week ago, and the kinds that sell from $5.25 up are Just about as high as they have been at any time this year. The medium grades and canners have sold rather slowly, and while they are a little higher than they were a week ago, still they are not back to where they were before the break. The market on such kinds Is so uneven that It Is Impossible to tell Just how much prices have ad vanced during the week. Another factor which Is beginning to hurt the sale of the medium to common grades is the fact that buyers are looking for the first signs ot grass. Pastures are now in good condition, so that the impression Is that stock will soon begin to arrive, which will show the effects of grass and on such kinds buyers are. of course, very bearish. Commission men are cautioning their shippers to be very careful about buying and shipping stock that has been on grass long enough to show the effects. Bulls, veal calves and stags nave all Improved In price during tho past week where the quality was good. Calves are about back to the high time, as choice veals are now selling as high as $7.00. Stockers and feeders have been in light supply all the week, and aa the rains im proved the demand from the country prices have advanced to some extent. In some cases sales have been made that looked easily IBS 26c higher, but as a rule the mar ket Is not much over WxgiSc higher for the week. The greatest advance was, of course, on the better grades. At the close or the week there are very few Btock cattle of any kind left In the yards. Representative ",e,: COWS. No. At. Ft. No. Av. With favorable reports from other points the market here opened active and fully 6c higher than yesterday's close on all classes of hogs. Cood heavy hogs were In demand and sold readily at prices a nig oc nigii-i. ranging mostly from t7.15 to f7.25 and as hi sri a m ? jf m.-a h nalil for a nrlme load. Medium weights were In fair demsnd and sold at prices ranging from t7.00 to t7.16. Light hogs were not In great demand but sold mostly 6c higher and went from f7.00 down. Late In the morning the market took a slump and for a time practically nothing was done There were about 26 loads, mostly light stuff unsold, which the packers did not seem to want, and the close could be quoted very slow and weak. The market for the week has been In very good shape and prices have averaged higher than they did a week ago. Wednes day and Thursday were the high days of the week, and also the high days since May of 1893. On Friday there was a slight drop, but the loss was about regained on Saturday, jnepreseniauv- No. to!!! As. Sh. Tr. No. at. Bh.
