Governor' Foot Guard. Later he became
a captain of the revolutionary forces. He
was among the leaders of his native state
(Connecticut) among the force that main
tained the revolutionary cause, and wa
present at Tlconderoga at th time of Its
abandonment by St. Clair.
General Leavenworth's Career.
General Leavenworth wa born at New
Haven In 1783 and died in 1834. after an
active career, aa a lawyer, statesman and
soldier. Upon the outbreak of the war of
1812, his father having In the meantime
located at Delhi, N. Y., he organised a
company of volunteer in Delaware county.
He won great distinction upon the battle
field, was wounded thrice and had a horse
hot from under him. HI service wa ao
marked with dash and gallantry that the
general government tendered blm a com
mission as major of Infantry, which he ac
cepted only with the understanding that
he be permitted to serve In the New York
legislature, to which his people had elected
him over bis protest. Before entering the
volunteer service h. was a partner of Gen
eral Erastus Root, ons of the great law
yer of hi day. Having completed hi
ervlc in the legislature he re-entered
the army and made a record that will stand
for all time. In 1811 he wa promoted a
lieutenant colonel and assigned to the Fifth
Infantry- He marched with his regiment
from Detroit, Mich., to the Falls of St.
Anthony, on the upper water of th Mis
sissippi, and there, op Its banks, located
Fort Snelllng,' Minn. In 1862 he com
manded a successful expedition against the
Arickaraes In Iowa, with headquarter near
Council Bluff. Ia.
Got His Reglmeat.
In 1825 he was promoted to th colonelcy
of th. Third Infantry and asatgned to the
command at Green Bay barrack. Wi.
The following year he marched with a
detachment of hi regiment to Jefferson
barracks. Mo., under Instruction to build
th post, established the previous year,
and there organise an Infantry school for
th. aducatloa of Wsst Point graduate as
signed to tho Infantry arm. He at one
addressed himself to th. task, but th.
school wa shortlived. A tew months aftsr

General Leavenworth wa assigned to the
command of the southwest frontier. While
personally conducting a campaign against
the Pawnees he died in the field of fever,
July 25, 1834. He was brevetted brigadier
general a few day prevlou. Th remains
were carried from Cross Timber, near the
mouth of the Washita river, to Delhi. N.
Y.. where they have until now rested.
Services Were Sabataattal.
The services of General Leavenworth
were more substantial than showy. HI
expedition for the selection and establish
ment of distant outposts, his treatment of
powerful tribe of hostile Indian and-hi
guardianship of the advanced weatera fron
tier were marked by courage, genius, energy
and skill. Indeed, be was especially com
mended by President Monroe for hi suc
cessful campaign In 1823 In Iowa. HI re
port In 1821 on the validity of the "Carver"
claim laved the government a large body
of valuable lands. HI vigorous treatment
of the land scurvy, from which some of his
soldier died in Minnesota In 1819, search
ing In person th forest for vegetable anti
scorbutics, the free use of which relieved
the sick, endeared him to hla soldier.
The hardship undergone by himself and
every member of hi force la the expedi
tion to eetablleh Fort Snelllng would have
embarrassed if not deterred a less de
termined man. The poling of their
bateaux 300 mile up th Mississippi river,
the hostility of the Sioux and OJlbwa. th
difficulty of procuring supplies, quarter or
medicine ia a wild and lavage country caa
hardly be appreciated at tbli date. Even
the general' commissary, Lieutenant
Camp, for lack of stationery sent hi re
port 'to Wasbtngtoa written oa birch
bark.
