THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: TI1UIISPAY, MAY 15, 100 COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Oorn Ehuni WeakiMi in Othar Oraim and Closes Up. NO ABATEMENT IN PROVISIONAL ADVANCE Meg Pradnrli Sapoorted and Make Clean Oelna, While Wheat and Oata cenmo to Bearish Fir tore and Drop OIT. CHICAGO. May 14 Grain trade today i a dragging content between the bears, backed up by favorable weather for wheat and corn, and the bulla In the corn pit, who were making; good purchases on the extremely email local movement. In the and July wheat closed 'Ac depressed, July corn So higher and July oata 'oV lower, provisions continue In their upward jour ney and closed 10c to 12lc advanced. yesterday's bulla at the opening of the wheat pit today ehowed that they had for gotten all about yesterday's bullish gov ernment report. The cubic showed no response to strength here and above all the weather was very favorable. Rain fell copiously In Kansas and Nebraska and the spring country In the west waa clear ing. A local etaMstlclan made a report In dicating a winter yield of lo,ono,00i bu., quite at variance with the government esti mate yesterday. Theee factor pttarled July a shade to HVHc lower at 7iic to 76c and depressed It early to 75,W'r 7fc. Corn strength and reports of 'ool rash business brought a good reaction and i;i''es for a tlnvi held firm ne r last nlgnt s close. Trade, however, was light, the outsldn peoulator was not In the market and there was eome fair selling by yesterday's buy ers. Part of the rencllon was due to short covering. Oradually prices slipped back. The BeptTer and December options were noticeably weaker and materially widened their spreads under July. The close was weak, with July '4c lower, at 76"WSo. Local receipts were 22 cars, none of con tract grade, and Minneapolis and Duluth reported 124 cars, making a total for the three points of 14. against 140 last week and 198 a year ago. Primary receipts were . bu., against 326.000 last year. Sea board clarences In wheat and flour equalled 58.K0 bu. The seaboard reported 10 loads taken for export. . Corn was the leader tSf the pits In the matter of strength. Weather was favor able and there were reports that the coun try would soon begin making freer de liveries. Small receipts, however, seemed to reject this report, for the general run of cars has gotten down to about twenty five for this point. Receipts today were only 27 cars and at once Influenced early buying. Several of the leading houses be gan In offerings that were made out of sympathy for the wheat weakness, but as soon as the crowd saw the stuff was going Into strong hands shorts covered and fair activity resulted. Cash business waa good, St. Louis bought here and cables were firm and corn quickly developed Independent strength,, and July, which sold early at 62c, Jumped to, 634.0. Late profit-taking took off some or the gain and wheat weak ness bad a depressing effect. July closed firm, ,o up, at 34c. Onta were Influenced by selling by the leading bull operators. Crop advices noted harvesting In North Carolina and ripening fields In Texaa, but In general there was no change In the situation. IJberal cash sales were made for shipment and corn strength rave some aid to an otherwise weak mar ket. Prices fluctuated very narrowly and July closed weak, Vff-Hc lower, at 367 87c. Receipts were small at 66 cars. The su-ength In provisions was that of renewed buying and support by packers, supported by a strong hog market at the yards. There was still talk of a decided upturn In lard and a leading house bought heavily of this product. Offerings were rather free on the advance, but the market ruled strong and higher. July pork closed 124o up at 117. 60, July lard 10c higher at Jl0.42Hfi10.46 and July ribs 10c advanced at Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat, IS cars; corn, 25 cars; oata, 106 cars; hogs, 280(iO head. HEW YORK STOCKS AID BOXD8. Trading; Dormant In Stocks trlth Small Transactions. NEW YORK. Mav 14-Todav's small changes in prloea of stocks were mostly gains, but the firmness of the market was passive and had no positive element In It so far as could be perceived. The trudlne ten near to the point or stagnation ana the day's total transactions were smaller than for many months. 1 nion facinc maae some snow ot strcnsin nd was far In the lead of all other stocks in point of activity. Gossip was In circuli tlon of an Intended Increase in the dividend rate on the stock. Crons and the anthracite coal miners convention which was In session at Hazle ton to decide whether to make the condi tional strike of the miners' permanent had a bearing on stocks. No light was thrown on the strike question before the close of the day. but the coal stocks shared gen erally In the firmness. Another feature of the day was the wide recoveries acored by some of the high firlced stocks which fell violently in the Iquldatlon Monday. There were other high priced BtocRs in tne active 11st wnicn soia today at wide declines from the previous sales. The money market was much quieter to day and the-e was no seeming difficulty in obtaining call loans at s per cent or unaer. One cause of this was the much lighter demand for accommodation. The recent high rate has also had the effect of bring ing auDDltes. The process of borrowing in foreign money markets waa continued to day, aa Indicated by the further decline In the sterling exchange market and the Jump In New- York exchange at Chicago from 26c premium yesterday to 60c premium was a sign of the active demand for remittance to New York from that center, wnicn is renorted also to be In orogreas from other domestic centprs. The subtreaaury require ments on tne money market are much less than last week, partly owing to Increased pension payments. It is worthy of note also that the gov ernment's surplus revenue this month Is onlv about $1,000,000, compared with almost $3,000,000 for the -corresponding period of last year. Receipts from Internal revenue thus far this month are some $3,500,000 less than for the corresponding period last year. This decline Is probably due to measures In anticipation of the repeal on July 1 next of tne war taxes ana mis tennency wui nrobahlv continue until the period of the repeal, thus relieving the money market of part or tne requirement 01 me surplus revenue. Totals 2,360 8.456 2,073 CATTLE There was not a heavy run of cattle here today, but still the receipts for tiie first half of the week are considerably In excess of the same days of last week, though not up to the recelpta for the cor responding days of last year. The big bulk of the offerings this morning consisted of beef steers, and the quality waa exceptionally good. Packers all seemed to bo anxious for supplies and as a result "the market waa active and also higher. Aa a general thing the prices paid looked 610o higher' than yesterday. As high as $7.10 was paid and a number of bunches brought $7.00. Today's advance carries good cattle to the high point ot the year. Prime lightweight cattle also sold to good advantage and even the medium Sradea commanded better prices than they Id yesterday. The market. In fact, was In very satisfactory shape all around, and practically everything was disposed of at an early hour. There waa comparatively little cow stuff In the yards today, so that anything good was picked up In a hurry, and in most cases at an advance of 6 10c. The less de sirable offerings were, of course, not In as good request as the commoner kinds, but still they also commanded strong prices as compared with yesterday. Bulls, veal calves and stags also sold at good, strong prices whera the quality was at all good. There were very few stockers and feed era In the yards today, and as the demand for desirable grades was in good shape just about steady prices were paid. The common kinds moved slowly, the same as usual, but still the pens were cleared in good season. The demand from the coun try has been very light so far this week, and yesterday only seven cars were shipped to the country. It is -thought, however, that the rains will improve the demand. RATES FAVOR THE PACKERS Interstate Commerce Commission to Begn Investigation of Charges. CHICAGO. Msy 14. Chairman Knspp ot ths Interstate Commerce commission, which will begin an investigation of live stock rates here tomorrow, stated today that the Investigation had no direct bearing on the government's proceedings against the so called Beef trust. No packers will be In vestigated. The Investigation baa to do with the ru mors that railroads are discriminating (paying rebates) in a way which is detri mental to the Interests of Iowa cattle ship pers, and which unduly favors Omaha and other Missouri river packers. The rate on live stock is said to be proportionately higher than the dressed beef rate, which gives an advantage to the packers neareat the gource of supply. Des Moines A Fort Dodge Sold. NEW YORK.
