BEARISH VIEW OF GOVERNMENT REPORT
Crowd Ignores Bolliah Statistic,, bat

Independent Strength.
CHICAGO, May 13. This win the day for
Jgeetlng the government crop report In
the raTn pita and although the statistics
offered by the department were materi
ally bullish over last observations, the
crowd, as usual, assumed that It knew
more about the true condition than did
the government and paid only passing at
tention to It. Other conditions of bullish
character helped prices and after a nerv
ous and haggling session July wheat
olosed Ho higher, July corn c up and
July oats a shade higher. Provisions
showed independent strength and closed
lo to JOo higher.
The reduction of the winter wheat con
dition on May, Mr a, against 78c. was
not as great as hsd been expected. The
fact that the observations were taken
before the recent relieving rains In the
south woe t had greatly helped the grow
ing crops, many bears figuring that the
actual condition should be bearish. The
reduction of the acreage by 4.868.000 was
considered decidedly bullish, but many of
tha speculators who had divergent opin
ions refused to believe the Sgurea as trust
worthy. It waa simply another case of the
usual bearish reception of tha government
report. Notwithstanding this the market
did show good tone at the opening. The
bulla had the ascendant and July wheat
opened Va to HUto higher at 76tc
to 76-40 and advanced to 76Vic. Soon, how
aver, came the expected selling. There
were several dips and July sold under yes
terday at 76'8'tWtc. The opinion prevailed
for a time that no one really believed the
report and selling was marked, especially
front the northwest. Outside points re
ported early sagged off later and the ef
fort was to get back to statlstlrs for Its
guide. Receipts were very small. Brad
treet's reported the world's visible de
creased by 2,734.000 bushels and contract
tonka generally were reported rapidly
falling off. There was some rain north
west that helped the tone somewhat, but
tha crowd n a whole got liberally short
of stuff. There came some fair export
ttualneoa and the crowd got frightened. It
soon appeared that the market was over
sold ana prices advanced rapidly as shorts
covered. July gained Its top figure again
and closed Arm, He higher at 76761c.
Receipts. 68 cars, contract; Minneapolis
and IMiluth reported 6 cars, a total for
the three points of 123 cars, against 151
cars lut week and 230 cars a year ago.
Primary receipts were 178,000 bushels, com
pared to 851,000 Inst week. Seaboard clear
ances equalled 806.000 bushels. The sea
board reported eight loada taken for ex
port. Advices from southern Illinois stated
that harvesting would begin there by
June 10.
Corn had tha support of wheat to help
It against the depressing influences of a
dull trade and favorable crop reports.
Most of tha day speculators were either
waiting for the big bull Interest to get
Into tha market or were watching the ac
tion of the wheat pit. Firmer cables and
rad weather northwest lent strength to
he market and at the opening July sold to
63c There was almost no selling pressure,
but when wheat sagged corn went down
to 62,ifr63Se, There was a late reaction
with wheat and July closed c up at
S274jf. Receipts, 121 cars.
Oats followed the action of wheat and
com and ruled dull most of the session.
There waa a light demand early that sent
?uly to 3Ta&lc, but the bull manlpu
ator of May optlona waa selling freely.
Home new oats from Texas found their
Way here and prices dipped to 3674c The
Hone, however, was steady, a shade up at
I74C. Receipts, 236 cars.
. Provisions showed renewed strength
again on a strong hog market. Commls-
rlon - houses bought moderately. Some
lquldatlon In the way of outside profit
taking took oft some of the gain, but the
close was Arm. July pork closed 5c up at
I17.47V4; July lard. 10c higher at llO.aW
10 3. and July ribs, 6&?Vo higher at $9.6. Vi
69.60.
Estimated receipts tomorrow: Wheat, 20
cars; corn, 36 cars; oats, 60 cars; hogs
$8"0 head.

NEW YORK STOCKS A PSD BONDS.
Depressing lnalltles of Yesterday
Alleviated and Tone Firmer.
NEW YORK. Mnv IS -Tnav'i atnV mar
ket was a dull and narrow affair between
professional traders for the most part, but
the stronger tone was unmistakable. To
a large extent this was a natural recovery
irom yeaieraay a weakness. Tne influences
which weakened the market then were
alleviated today and there was a consider,
able demand from the professionals for
stocks sold short yesterday on unfavorable
developments. The unfavorable crop condi
tions May 1 Induced considerable realising
by the short Interest. Pressure against the
decline, was also exerted by the circula
tion 01 rumors or a ravoraoie turn In the
anthracite strike situation, but no inform
ation on this point was forthcoming.
The money situation was somewhat easier
today, althouah loans were made as:aln at
as high as 8 per cent. The foreign banking
nouses were very large lenders in tne mar
ket and the continued decline In exchange
reflected further borrowing from foreign
money markets, under which the monev
rate weakened. The selling of exchange In
mis operation, in effect, going short In the
exchange market and represents require
ments to be met In the future. To some
extent It Is speculation on the future
volume of our exports which depends most
largely onjuie sise or tne coming corn crop.
As the ifoatlng supply In London Is small,
the technical effect Is to Induce purchases
In New York by the arbitrage brokers to
cover this demand In London, while the
shipments of stocks from New York are
covered by sales of exchange here, thus
relieving the demands for credits on the
local money market.
Yesterday sharp relapses In some stocks
awakened skepticism as to many recent
rumors or tne source or recent demand
for stocks, said to be for control bv lame
Interests. But the Louisville & Nashville
episode and th! known character of some
of the recent distribution of Reading
among other railroad Interests keeps alive
tne conviotion mat mere is a tendency
toward the lodgement of stocks In strona-
hands for control.
The state of suspension of the Northern
Securities company clearly does not prevent
tno progress 01 pmns ior control, as tne
question Involved there Is one of method
In holding stocks after they have been
secured. A rumor circulated todav. al
though emphatically denied, that the North.
ern securities company wouia abandon Its
present plan resulted in a drop In the stock
on the curb to 99. 'which Is Its first fall
below parity. The stock market closed dull
and Arm.
The bond market was dull and somewhat
Irregular. Total sales, par value, 82.310,000.
United States 8s and 8s declined Vi per cent
on the last call.

CATTLE There was a fairly liberal sup
ply of cattle here today, which makes the
receipts ior tne two aays mis wees, con
siderably In excess of the same days of
last week, but not equal to the same days
of last year. The quality of the offerings
waa rainy gooa ana tne marxet as a wnoie
waa In very satisfactory condition.
Packers seemed to be fairly anxious for
the better grades of beef steers this morn
ing and as a result the market waa some
what active and could safely be quoted
steady to strong on the better grades.
That was especially true of the choice
heavy cattle and also of the prime light
weights. The medium grades of cattle
were not In quite as good demand, but
still they sold without much trouble at
fully steady prlceB as compared with yes
terday. Practically everything at all de
sirable was out of first hands In good
season.
The better grades of cows and heifers
were also in good, request this morning
and sellers hsd no trouble In selling such
kinds at steady to strong prices. The same
as was the case with steers, the medium
kinds and common stuff did not sell quite
as freely as the better grades, but at the
same time tne prices paid looaea steady.
There was not enough change In the
f rices paid for bulls, veal calves and stags
o be worthy of mention.
There were only a few Blockers and feed
ers on sale thla morning, but the more de
sirable offerings sold freely at fully steady
firices. When It came to the common and
lghtwelght stuff the market was less ac
tive the same as usual, but as offerings
were limited sellers disposed of practically
everything they had In good season at
steady prices. Representative sales:

HOGS There was Just a fair run of hogs
here today, and under the Influence of a
good local demand the market advanced 5c
all around. The quality of the hogs was
considerably better today than yesterday,
so that the market on paper shows up In
good shape. Packers started out In good
season, and as a result the bulk of the
offerings was disposed of at a reasonably
early hour. The better grades and heavier
weignta were, of course. In the best de
mand, but still sellers did not experience
any great difficulty as a rule In rilannaina
of even their lightweight stuff. The most
or tne good wetarht hoars sold from 17 10 tn
E16, and the medium weights brought from
.00 to 37.10. The lighter loads sold from
.96 down. Today's advance carries the
market well back toward the hlah nnlnt
of the year. Representative sales:

SHEEP As will be seen from the table
of receipts above, the supply of sheep and
lambs for the two days this week Is about
the same as for the two days of last week,
but considerably short of the same days
of last year. The quality of the offerings
today was not very good, which naturally
had a bad effect on the market. Packers
took hold In fairly good shape and bought
up the better grades at lust about steadv
prices. Colorado wool lambs sold as high
aa 36.80, which was the same as they
brought yesterday. When It came to the
common stuff, however, the market was
very dull and weak. Packers did not seem
to want the common stuff at all. and as a
result their bids were lower, and In a good
many rases sellers could not even get the
buyers to look at what they had. It was
late before a clearance was made.
