THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: TUESDAY, MAY 18, 1002. I COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Bulliih Statintici and Short AooounU Boost Pricei to Higher 01oe. HARKED ABSENCE OF SELLING PRESSURE pprovlalons Reach Hltknl Level Year, hot Aro Depressed on Proflt Taking. Thou h Supported , to Firm Close. CHICAGO, May 12. Active covering of ihort account on very bullish statistics Jumped prices upward la the grain pita today and relieved the otherwise monoton ous quiet that usually prevails on the Hoard of Trade while speculators waited for the government crop report. A con tinued absence of a selling pressure aim helped prices and July wheat cloned Sc higher, July corn o up and July oata Vi higher. Provisions fluctuated errat ically and closed a shale lower to 12Vo higher. Cables were firm and world's shipments and the on passage derreaaea were bull lull. Some small buying was done for an hour and then conditions became such that buylrur set In In rood fashion and the bulls pushed prices up actively. Stocks of wheat were reported much decreased, the vlalble supply being decreased 8,026,000 bushels compared to W7.0U0 buahela last year. Exports were very heavy, the sea board clearances In wheat and flour equal ing 1.270.0 bushels. This started shorts to covering freely, especially leading; St. Louis houses. For the third consecutive day there was an absence of selling pres sure and prices advanced fairly. A re- fiort current In the pit that the forthoom ng report would Indicate a condition of 71.1. as against 78.4 on Airll 1. gained con slderable credence. Added to these factors were discouraging reporta of chlnchbugs, InsufTlclent rains and extensive plowing; up of wheat fields In the southwest. The local trade turned bullish and shoved July to 7HVo after opening; a shade to Vfcc up at 7u'c4j'75:tlc. Commission houses and big traders who bought early liquidated at the high price and the tone eased off a little. The close, however, waa still strong, July Sc. higher at 7fiST57c. Local receipts were small at 12 cars. Minneapolis anil Duluth reported 262 cars, making a total for the three points of 264 cars, against 315 last week and 354 a year ago. Primary receipts were only 360,000 bushels, com pared with 616,0ii0 bushels last year. The world's shipments were 7,794,000 bushels, gainst 8.41n,0uO bushels last year. On pas sage breadntufTa decreased fc2,OH buahela Corn tradnra paid little attention to statistics, which. If anything, were rather bearish, and bulled the pit all session. All buying by the big bull Interest and ahort covering were the incentives. Aa for sev eral days past there was again no notice able selling pressure. The sentiment was bullish all around and was helped by firmer cables and the better tone In wheat. A number of heavy buying orders for the St. Louis account early stampeded the local crowd, who soon turned to competing 1th that market for the very small offer ings. After the buying erase had pushed July corn from 61o to 63o there was some late profit-taking and the market lost part of Its atrength. July, however, closed firm o up at 62c. Receipts were 96 cars. Oats were Inclined to dullness, although they made fair advance on the strength In corn and wheat. There was a fair demand from St. Louis and the English houses, and marked reduction In stocks gave the market a bullish aspect. Shippers were taking some stuff and about the only sell ing waa by scalpers. Chlnchbugs were re ported In the central states. July opened unchanged at 37a, sold to 3TV4c and closed firm WUo down at 8744i,314c. Receipts ' were 12tl cars. ' Considerable profit-taking, after prices , had been manipulated to the highest level for the year, took off much of the gain made in provisions today. Hog receipts over the west were large and prlcea from 6c to 100 lower. But In the face of this bearish argument brokers for packers 1 pushed July pork up to 117.60. Other prod ucts on the list advanced In sympathy and then a good deal of stuff wan thrown over board. Prices receded sharply, but the , tone still held firm. July pork closed 12HC up at 17.42, July lard a shade down at ll0.22Vtfs10.25 and July rlba unchanged at 92Vi. May 12.-The position n' the local money market was undoubtedly the source of the depression which ruled in the stock market today. This was rein forced by the anthracite labor situation as shown bv the susnenslon of work today In the anthracite regions and by feari of a very unfavorable renort on tnc concu tlon of the crops as of May 1 to be mailo by trie Agricultural department tnis aner noon. The statement of the banks Saturday sufficiently indicated that some recupern tlve process would be used this week. The heavy decline of over $6,1100,000 In the cnh reserves of the banks had little licht thrown upon It today, and was a good deal of a puzxle. even to bankers. The only additional light on the subject was the report that a heavy shipment of cosh was made to Philadelphia last week In further ance of tho transfer of the Choctaw, Okla homa & Gulf, and which did not figure In the routine transactions of the banks. The pressure for funds outside of the stock market was most, clearly manifest In the sterling exchange market, In which there was a violent decline of 4c In the pound There were larae offerings of bankers bills axalnBt further loans negotiated abroad and London was a free buyer of stocks duties the first hour, thus helping out the budoIv 01 exchange. The statement of the country's foreign trade for April, showing a decline In agrl 1 . .. . I AvnnptA r,e nun tl tU) ftlO goes to explain the prevailing scarcity of exchange and the persistent firmness of foreign exchange up to. today's sharp break. The total sales of stocks for the day which were not much In excess of 600,000 shares, showed that the liquidation was not lnrirn or indiscriminate. The coalers had the additional burden of the etrlke to carry. Union Pacific and Southern railway were conspicuous for comparative firmness during the whole dav. The market closed steady. Among the notable declines may be mentioned General Electric 21. with a recovery of 18; West- inehnuse Electric 11. the first preferred 94 North American 6, Delaware, Iackawanna Western 13. Chicago. St. Paul. Minne anolis & .Omaha 104, New York, New Haven & Hartford 8, Chicago & North western 64. Delaware & Hudson 4"4. Chi caxo. Indianapolis & louisvuie 0-4, iew Jersey Central 4 and Long Island 44. The list of declines running from 1 to nnints la too ions for enumeration here. Money went to 10 per cent today and receded to only after the principal de manri wns satisfied. Bonds were weak in sympathy with stocks. Total sales, par value, $3,240,000. United States new and old 4a and the 6b declined 4 per cent on the last call. The following are the closing prices on the New York Stock exchange: V. 8. m. ti.
