last month to aa many cities of the coun
try asking for Information as to the meth
odl employed In collecting and disposing
Of garbage and other waste matter. The
letter show that a great variety of meth
ods are In vogue. Mr. Rosewater will
present his report on this subject to the
Advisory board at Its meeting May 14
when he will make recommendations as to
what. In his opinion, Omaha should do In
the way of settling the garbage question.
"My oplnloa Is," said he, "that Omaha
hould ultimately collect and dispose of Its
own garbage and from what Information I
fcave been able to gather I tblhk the crema
tory Is the best solution of the problem.
We should prohibit the dumping of manure
In the river. It should be hauled out to
the farms and used as fertilizer."

sumed at a cost of 14,366.46.
Richmond Garbage is burned In a crema
tory maintained at the city's expense.
Salt Lake City Garbage crematory
burned down In 1900 ana city Is now con
sidering bids for new plant. The old plant
cost $M,(ioo and had a capacity of seven
tons daily. The cost of running was $337.41
per month.
Toledo Garbage disposed of by contract,
the contractor hauling Into country and
dumping It In fields, where the farmera
plow ltlunder.
Wheeling- City has maintained crematory
for several years; fuel, natural gas;
capacity, thirty tons. Cost of removing
garbage Is 7,000 per year, defrayed by
city tax.
