CHICAGO. May 8 Oraln tending was
very quirt today. waltlnK lor the govern
ment report on the crop situation which Is
ex per tea tomorrow. In spite of the slow
ness of the market, however, a very firm
undertone prevailed and July wheat closed
He higher, July corn f,a higher and
juiv oats c up. Provisions were again
Independently strong and closed IVfcc to
llr advance. ,
At the outset wheat showed a tolerably
firm tone on dry weather In northwest,
with still further retarded spring; sowing
beeause of moisture and crop damage re
ports from Kansas. Yesterday's rash
situation was still bulllshly effective and
, handlers of cash stuff still reported a con
tlnuance of the demand aroused during
line recent decline. Offerings were light
and receipts were small. Although the de
mand was only fair It was sufficient to
hold up the market. A fair export busi
ness was dons at the seaboard, 18 loads
being reported. The Michigan stats crop
report showed a condition of 82, against 85
er cent last month. Minneapolis and
)uluth reported that stocks would show a
.decrease of 1,000.000 bushels. On these In
i fhienrea July, which opened unchanged to
. higher, at 7Hc to Uc, sold up to 75c,
i fluctuated narrowly and closed firm. He up
at 744,c. Local receipts were 61 cars, 2 of
contract grade; Minneapolis and Dulutn re
ceived 153 cars, making a total for the
three points of 21 cars, against 22 last
week and 233 a year ago. Primary receipts
were 248.000 bushels, compared to 34i.0OO
bushels last year. Argentine shipments
were 612,0u0 bushels, against 1,012,000 last
week.
Although the corn trade was slow much
of the time in sympathy with the waiting
wheat market the tone ruled strong under
the prevailing bullish sentiment. The open
ing was higher on the what advance and
colder weather, but continued small re
ceipts, declining stocks and the good cash
demand governed the pit. As usual of late
the crowd quickly followed the lead of the
leading bull house. Borne small scalpers
sold, as did commission house, early, and
caused a dip, but when the bulls began to
"buy September, whereas for several days
thev had sold that option, the crowd tailed
alter. September closed with a gain of He
at CUc and July, after selling at 61c,
closed -He "P at 614c. Favorable
weather for seeding and growth of the al
ready planted corn seem not to effect an
Increase In country offerings. Receipts
were very small, at 76 cars.
Oats experienced a strong and fairly, ac
tive market most of the session. The lead
ing bull professional In May options was In
the nit buying fairly, as also were several
big commission houses. There Is still some
fear of manipulation of the pit by the
principal bull. Corn strength caused part
of the upturn, but receipts and offerings
were small, shipping sales were large and
the cash premium Influenced the market.
July closed strong at Its top figures. He
higher at 36c. Receipts were 155 cars.
There was some fair liquidation for
proMts in hog products, but It was not
sufficient to retard a good advance. Prices
were higher all day and the tone ruled
strong on the higher prices at the yards, a
good packers support and outside buying.
July nork closed 17tyc higher at J17.42H.
July l.i rd 10c up at J10.32V and July ribs
7Hc higher at $.724.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat,
20 cars; corn, 90 cars; oats, 150 cars; hogs,
neao.

NEW YORK STOCKS ASD BONDS.
Big Decline la Volume of Stock
Dealings.
NEW YORK. Mar 9 The volume of
dealings today fell considerably below
hiinnn shares for the first time In a good
many weeks. Whether there was any other
reason for this dullness than the decision
on the part of speculators lately leading
the market to let It He fallow for a time
waa not evident. Perhaps the long drawn
out controversy over the anthracite labor
settlement might have been effective In
dlsnoursflrliir sneculntlva actlvltv. If that
was the factor which Induced the curtail
ment of demand and the sagging of prices
In the general list It did not appear among
the coalers .themselves.
That group was affected by the marked
strength of Delaware & Hudson. The de
mand for this stock seemed to be of
verv snecla.1 character.
There was some show of strength In the
eerly dealings and an appearance of re
newed activity on the part of the recently
prominent market leaders. Activity waa
manifest also on the part of smaller pools
In railway stocks. Amalgamated Copper
was steady and advanced at one time l4.
Reports were current that sales of copper
had been effected at 124c by a leading
competitor In sufficient amount to take It
out of the market for some time to come.
The announcement that one of the sus
pended Stock exchange firms would soon
resume, and that the other two hoped to
do so was regarded with satisfaction, in
tematlonal Power was lifted 4 points.
Louisville A Nashville fell back after its
recent advance and there was a drop of
4 points In Chicago A Eastern Illinois. The
weakness In Chicago Northwestern was
not associated with the conflicting reports
of the admission to the directory of rep
resentatives of the Moore Interests who
are reported to have acquired large hold
ings of stock lately. TetVnessee Coal con
tinued to show the unfavorable effect of
Its annual report.
The reactionary tendency of the market
became more general after the appearance
of the preliminary estimate of the week's
currency movement. It appears that the
banks have received on balance from the
Interior less than $1,000,000, agatnat the loss
to the subtreasury during the week of
$2,875,000. The loan Item Is, of course, a
matter of surmise. Th market closed dull
and steady.
Bonds were easier In sympathy with
stocks. Total sales, par valje, $2,253,000.
United States bonds were all unchanged
on the last call.

CATTLE There was a falr-alxed run of
cattle here this morning for a Friday, but
still the supply for the week to date has
been exceptionally smalt Packers took
hold In fairly good shape today, so that the
buia of the oneringa waa disposed ot in
good season.
Beer steers maae up me Dig ena or tne
offerings and some of the cattle showed
considerable quality, aa will be seen from
the sales below, facaers ail seemed to De
anxious for the good to choice steers, and
those answering to that description brought
fully steady prices without much trouble.
That was true of either the choice heavy
cattle or the cnoice ugntweignta. wnen
It came to the commoner grades, however,
trade was dull and In a good many cases
sellers found It hard to get what they
considered steady prices for the medium to
common kinds. Most everytning. tnougn,
nine not nf first hands In fairly aood season.

steady to strong on all desirable grades.
The better the quality the easier It was
to make a satisfactory sale, but still even
the medium and common grades sold with
out much trouble at right around steady
prices as compared witn yesteraay.
Bulls, veal calves and atags also sold In
lust about yesterday's notches, and the
k.itor trades were In good demand.
There, were only a few stockers and feed-
era In the yards this morning, so there was
not much cnange in me maraei. Anytning
at all good sold freely at good, steady
prices, but or course tne ueinaiia lur tne
undesirable grades was very limited. Yes
terday there were a dosen loads shipped
to the country. Representative saies:
