Acting on the belief that the drouth rules In (trains are over. peculators pressed the market today and declines were the order In all the pits. It was clearly a day governed by the dis appearance of the dry weather bogey and at the close July wheat showed a loss of lo. July corn c and July oats c. Provisions closed, a shade to 6c lower. Bears started to dominate wheat at the sound of the opening font. Bearish news wss at hand la rood array. Cables were lower, receipts were Improving, but great est of all factors was the heavy rains that had come to the relief of Kansas and Ne braska. Private wires had reports of crop damage as usual, but the trade came to the speedy conviction that all was not lost In the southwest. Kstlmates of the Kansas wheat yield that had been as low aa 2(1,000,000 bushels a week ago, were raised today by conservative people to 60, 000.000 bushels. Moreover, statisticians were showing that with even that small yield the Kansas crop would be more than aver age. Under these Influences some heavy lines of long wheat owned locally went overboard and Bt. Louis ajid Kansas City sold heavily both here and In their own weakening markets. The only governing bullish factor was fear of more rain In the oversoaked spring wheat country. July wheat opened VvSc to V'o lower at 75Uffl"7&U touched 7&c and then slumped to 74Qc There was a large ohort Interest In wheat and on the decline many of the offerings were absorbed to cover accounts. Prices for July rallied to 75o, but the close was weak and lHc lower at 74'tp75o. Local receipts were 21 cars, 2 of contract grade; Minneapolis and Duluth reported 24 cars, making the total for the three nnlnta 816 cars, against 263 last year and 418 a year ago. Primary receipts were 4O6.00O bushels, compared to ew.uuo nuaneie lent year. Seaboard clearances. In wheat and flour, eaualed 14.000 bushels. World shipments were 8,608.000 bushels, against 8.0(8.000 bushels a year ago. Breadstuff on cuius Increased 120,0m) bushels. The visible auoDlv decreased 2.121.000 bushels. The seaboard reported 29 loads taken for export, . Corn ruled Break on the Influence of rains and the depression In wheat. The southwestern markets were selling; lib erally and were weaker, Kansas City being 2o oft at one rims, and at a discount under Chicago prices. Long corn was dumped freely in the nit, and traders everywhere argued beanamy because or tne gooa grow ins- weather. The rains have started farm era to giving up their corn stores more liberally. Rumors were current that some deal was on In this rlt, but shorts con tinued to sell to some extent. Cables were weaker and Influenced dips gnd receipts were more liberal. Julr corn started Kfi-TiC depressed and slumped to 60Hc, a loss of Use. There was a rally to too on cover ing, but the close waa weak, July Hftc lower at eovigWin Receipts were 170 cara. Rains had a weakening effect In oata and under the Influences of the breaks In other grains the market declined steadily. Trade was not large and cash business was Improved, but offerings were Increased on the general good crop news. Receipts were much larger than of late, 232 cara, Julv closed an lower at Dfi'Ac. Steady hog prices at the yards held prices of provisions from slumping In the pit. Products were Inclined to follow f ;ralns In the downturn and longs started n to liquidate. Packers gave some sup port, buying liberally of lard. The close waa about steady. Julv pork closed a shade lower at 117.10, July lard 24o lower at $10.17 and July rlba So down at J960 corn, 210 cars; oats, 286 cars; hogs, 17.000 head. Mav B. The disturbance nd anxletv which were felt In the financial world thla morning were much relieved be fore the close of the day on the Stock ex change, if known before the stock market opened tnat tne hopes eniertainea on eai- rday or securing means to tide over tne rms threatened with embarrassment had failed and there was nothing for the houses but to announce their Inability to meet their contracts. In two rases tne failures ere fullly expected, but the third came aa something of a surprise. There waa heavy liquidation on the Stock exchange when they were announced, but the effective support offered fha general market checked the Indiscriminate liquida tion and induced more sober reflections. There Is no doubt there was considerable distrust felt of the fabric of credits gen erally, owing to the Ignorance of the extent to whlcn the collapse or tne weoD-Meyer stocks had Involved others. There waa the fear this morning that the results must be faced of similar opera tions of other pools In various specialties and even of munlpulatlve advances In standard railway stocks; but the readiness with which offerlnas were absorbed quieted the nervous excitement and induced some buying back of stocks by hasty sellers. In tact, tne aay a net losses are iouna 10 oe oulte lnalcnlflcant as a rule and not a few Important stocks closed higher than Satur day. The renorts of copious rains In the southwest and the effective breaking of the drouth conditions which have kept a wane anxiety regarding the crops was a material id to tne recovery. The neralstent uDward course of Louis ville A Nashville waa a sustaining Influence, hut rumors were retained of a combination of this rosd with the Chicago. Indianapolis Louisville. The movement Tor tne ad vance was not followed up, however, wltn any degree of vigor. The prospect or a strike nn the nart of the anthracite miners and a stringency of the money market will mpiy accounc ror a repreewion oi -iotu lo tion. The active liquidation of the first hour accounted for the early one-half of the day's total dealings. Mow loaned as nign as ao per cent ana receded to 6 per cent, only after the prlncl nni demand had been met. There can be r.o doubt the discrimination against the collateral and the unfavorable disposition developed among money lenders toward the recent inaiscriminaie tendency ui biicuu' l At inn were factors In the money stringency Roma nr tne SDecuiative oonas were weaa under forced liquidation, but the market rnverd and became irreaular In sym nathv with, stocks. Recelnts of cattle were ex ceedingly light this morning and in fact there was the lightest Monday's run of cattle that has been here In a long time. Packers of course had to have a few cattle, so that prices Improved a little all around. Beet steers made up tne bulk or tne re ceipts and the quality was about the r.ame as It nas Deen tor tne last week or ten days. Packers took hold In good shape and the market was strong and active from start to finish. As a general thing every thing desirable sold Just about a dime higher than last week s close, and, owing to the light receipts, the pens were cleared at an early nour. some sales were made that looked a good deal higher than the same kinds sold for laat week, but It was thought tnat tnat was due to tne fact hat there were not enougn cattle to go he rounds. There were a few bunches of hay fed steers on sale and they also sold at very satisfactory prices. There were naraiy enougn cows and heifers In the yarda to make a test of the market, but the few that did arrive sold at strong to a dime higher prices than last week. The good stuff In particular met with ready sale at the advance, but the commoner kinds did not seem to be In particularly good demand and In a good many cases aia not oring mucn more tnan steady prices. Bulls and veal calves sold at a little stronger prices this morning where the quality waa at all good. Stags also im proved In prices and as high at 36.00 was paid for a bunch. mockers ana teeaers were scarce tills morning, but the demand showed an Im provement over last week, probably owing to the rains, so that the prices paid looked right around a dime higher than Friday's quotations. It was the choicer grades, though, that every one wanted and com mon cattle did not show much Improve ment. On Saturday there were eight cars shipped to the country.
