THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: THURSDAY, MAY 1, 1902. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL IsttiMt SUgnant in ths Lait Market Day Before the May DeliTeriea. PLENTIFUL BULLISH NEWS IN WHEAT Htwtrrr, Leading Cereal Makes bat Frartlonal Galaa and torn, Oata ad Provisions Close Depressed After Good Opening. CHICAGO, April 30 Oraln trade today was largely restricted to changing 0wra tlnns In preparation for tomorow s deliv eries of May options. Back of the chang ing there seemed to be a fair bullish stimulus, but so quiet was business that July wheat closed only up, J"' corn He lower and July oats c lower, provisions closed 10830c depressed. Considering- the fart that this was the last day of the month and preceded one of the four big; delivery days of the year, there was a fslr bull market In wheat. True, trade was dull In the main, but prices held well the greater part of the session. Bullish news was present In good force. Receipts were small; Duluth did not receive a car. Cables were firm. Kan sas reports were still complaining of In sufficient rains, and thirty-five counties In Minnesota and South Dakota reported a decrease In the spring wheat acreage amounting to Jo per cent. Home fair early buvlng by the leading corn bulls started prices up - well. There wss the usual chancing, however, July being taken up for May at lVn spread. The quietness Of the market helped the bears, and the advances were not held. Elevator people firedlcted as much ss 3,000,000 bushels d Iverles of Mav, and In spite of the de crease of 8,800.000 bushels In the world's vis ible supply report, prices eased back to last night s close. Thers wss a slight rally at the end and July, which sold early at 78'4C, closed a trifle better than yesterday and Woci up at "6H. Local receipts were 24 cars, Minneapolis reported 116 cars, making a total for the two points of 1H9 against IS for the three northwestern pointa last week and 220 a year ago. Pri mary receipts were iMO.OOO bushels, com pared to 430.000 bunhels a year ago. Sea board clearances In wheat and flour equaled 4S,0iO bushels. The seaboard re ported 10 loads taken for export. Corn trade was quiet and uneventful. The greater part of the business was that of changing by elevator people, July stuff being taken for May, lo spread. Wheat lent an early support, but the encourag ing condition of crops and the dullness resulted In light selling that brought de pression toward the close. July sold early at 64Vc, slumped to 63c and closed weak, He lower, at 6343Ho. Receipts were only 82 cars. ' Oats were very dull and Influenced by the other grains. May did not show any Inclination to stampede the crowd, as had been expected, when that option was thought to be cornered. The May de mand at times was fair at current prices. Crop advices were generally favorable. Country offerings were small. Fluctua tions were narrow. July closed He lower at 3fiic. Receipt were 1.10 cr Provisions were weak. Influenced by lib eral receipts at the yards, lower prices and fair sellllng. At the opening packers supported, but the outside liquidated to some extent, and with commission house selling brought a lower close. July pork closed 20c down at 118.60; July lard, Yiy-rit 15c down at $9."HlO.0O, and July ribs, 10c lower at $9 40. NEW YORK STOCKS ASD BODS. lateraatlonnl Power Wavers Errati cally and Dropa Seventy-Eight. NEW YORK, April 80 A nervous and feverish tone developed In today's stock market, principally as the result of the extraordinary movement In International Power with several contributory causes. Including a stiffening in the money rate, the uncertslnty In regard to preparations for May disbursements, the outcome of the anthracite labor conference and re newed reports of the need of rain In the southwest. International Power opened at 197, a decline of a point from yesterday's close. It recovered and then slumped by suc cessive stages of from 1 to 3 points to 183. It then rallied 20 points. Jumping as much as 6 points between sales, and fell back again to 162. Apparently no bids could then be secured for the stock, and It was neglected for an hour, until Just before the close, when a sale was effected at 120. The day's net decline was 78 points. Yesterday the stock sold at 199, which was the record price. For many days previous successive records had been established. In February the stock sold at 86 and In March the present movement started below 90. The closing quotation for the stock was 75 bid and 150 asked. This movement necessarily had some sentimental Influence on the rest of the market, which naturally was most pro nounced on specialties, and those regarding which little definite Information Is known. The declines running from 2 to 6H points In the American Locomotive stocks, Rail way steel Spring, American Grass Twine and Colorado Fuel may be cited as ex amples. The higher grade Industrials were not so much affected, although the United Btates Steel stocks continued heavy. Amalgamated and Sugar were higher, the latter rising two points at one time. Spirited buying of Chicago Great West ern, a rise of four points In Illinois Cen tral, and over two In St. Paul and Rock Island had a sustaining Influence In the list for a time, but prices gave way there In the unsettled state that developed. The Ineffectual attempts to market stocks which were previously manipulated was seen- In the six-point drop In Northwest ern, three In Chicago, St. Paul & Oman referred, and Ave in Keokuk & Dea nines. There can be no doubt that yesterday's action by the clearing house authorities, that Institutions hereafter admitted to Its privileges must maintain cash reserves commensurate with those required from the members themselves, was considered as an admonition on the rate of credit expansion and promotions which have been furthered by some of the trust companies. There was some calling of loans follow ing the flurry In stocks. The rise In money rates and the recovery in sterling exchange at Paris apparently had the effect of further deferring gold exports. " The bond market was active and prices were lower, in sympathy with stock. Total stocks, par value, 3.800. United States bonds were all unchanged on tha last call. There Is a decrease, however, as compared with the tame days ot last year, other markets were also well sup plld, so that prices broke sharply all around. Packers were very lndlflerent buy er and the inarxet wa extremely siow from start to finish. It ha been a long time since the beef steer market haa been In as bad shape as It was this morning. Buyers woulo not hardly look at cattle on the opening market and when they did look at them tnelr bids were so much lower that sellers did not consider them bids. The morning was well advanced before anything In the way of steers started toward the scales, and pack ers did not seem to care whether they got anything or not. Aa other marketa were In the aame condition there waa prac tically no shipping demand. As compared with Monday It i safe to say that the general market la right around 2jc lower, with the demand exceedingly llgnt. At a late hour there were still a good many cattle In first hands. What has been said above of beef steers applies about equally well to cow stuff. It was, perhaps, a little easier to sell th cow owing to the tact that the bulk of the offerings consisted of steers, but still the prices were right around 26c lower than they were on Monday. A compared with th high time the general market I 6O076o lower. The common grades. In particular, were very hard to move today, and buyers would usually ride In the pens and out again, saying they did not want that kind. As a result, seller found It a difficult proposition to dispose of the common grades at any price, but they could sell th good stuff If they would take off enough. Bulls, veal calvea and stags were all a little lower today In sympathy with the decline on steer and cow. There were not many stockers and feed ers In the yards, but only a few were wanted. The beat grades sold about steady. but other were slow saie, witn tne ten dency ot prices downward. The demand from the country I very limited, a will be seen from the fact that only Ave cars were shipped to the country yesterday. Representative sale: BEEF STEERS. Ke. II... to!!! 11... AT. PT. N.
