Acceptable, J. A. R. Elliott succeasfully de
fended his claim to the championship of
America at the live bird traps from tbe on
slaught of William Crosby of OFallon. 111.,
who had challenged him to the content for
1100 a side. To say that the result of the
shoot surprised all of the people who
thought they knew something of the rela
tive ability of the shooters would hardly be
fair to the men who back "Um" Elliott
through thick and thin, but that the major,
lty of the men who were assembled at the
Omaha Gun club grounds to witness the
vent were surprised Is certain. AcVnowl
6 flu the ability of the man from Kansas
City, they believed that in case of a high
wind the shooter from Illinois would have
thins In his favor and when the promised
blow we fulfilled the friends of Crosby
were almost certain of his success. The
wind was really In favor of Elliott, as it
blew ao strong aa to make the birds seek
cover and a large number of the birds
trapped bad to be flushed by balla thrown
at them after their release. The birds un
der ordinary circumstances could not be
called difficult, but when a brown pigeon
would melt Into oblivion and bury Itself In
the blowing sand before It reached the lim
its of tbe grounds almost any kind of a
bird would be considered one of more than
average difficulty.
Large Crowd Present.
A comparatively large crowd of people
from Omaha and Council Bluffs were a
embled at the grounds to witness tne con
test, which started at 2 o'clock, after hav
ing been announced for 2:30 the day berore.
Crosby was the first man at the traps and
caught an easy bird which waa bowled over
with the second barrel. From that time
until the sixteenth bird waa trapped it was
an even break between the men, both of
whom were shooting in excellent form. The
sixteenth bird at which Elliott shot was
awlft and got away from the traps so fast
that It was still going when the second bar
rel of the gun was empty and the Crosby
backers were elated. Crosby's eighteenth
bird came out In a gust of wind which al
most concealed It from view and the score
was even with a mlas apiece.
Both men shot perfectly on the second
bunch of twenty-five birds served them.
Crosby's second mUa took place on his fifty-seventh
bird, which was a swift one
that flew low. His sixtieth bird had power
to croaa the fence before it dropped dead,
and the sixtieth bird of Elliott Joined It at
almost the same point. From that time
every one of Elliott's birds died aa they
should, although one or two of them were
doubtful casea until retrieved.
Croaby missetL his eightieth bird, his
ninetieth, bis ninety-seventh and ninety
ninth, all of which were comparatively
easy birds, and IB every case the loss wsa
due to the state of the wind and dust,
which almost concealed tbe birds. At times
the wind waa so strong that the guns were
out of the control of the men, but It was
Dot as bad In this race aa in the one which
followed.
One of the prettleat races ever aeen on
the Omaha dun club grounds waa the fifty
bird contest between Walter Bhemwell of
Colorado Springs and Chrla Gottlieb of
Kanaaa City. This shoot waa arranged
Thursday for ISO a side, and although It
closed at the end of the forty-sixth round
on account of the lack of birds, those who
braved the elements and remained were
given an exhibition of bird shooting seldom
equaled by amateurs. Gottlieb waa in ex
cellent form and the first bunch of twenty
five birds went down without a miss.
The wind was constantly growing stranger
and the birds were difficult to flush. At
the beginning of the tenth round the rain
began to fall and the race was closed In a
driving rain, which made It almost Impos
sible to mark the course of the birds upon
leaving the traps. The birds refused to
respond to the balls in many cases
and many were released without
affording a target. Bhemwell lost hi
sixth, seventeenth, thirty-third and thirty-
seventh birds. Gottlieg lost his thirty
sixth and forty-first birds, winning by a
score of 44 to 42.
High Scores In State Rveat
Tbe close or tbe stats shoot waa re
markable for the high scores made. In spite
of the high wind of the morning. On ac
count of the live bird shoots in the after
noon the target program waa opened at 9
o'clock and there was no Intermission un
in it waa completed. Fred oilbert, as
usual, made the high score, followed by
Crosby, Garrett, Wettleaf and Htrsrhy In
the order named, with scores of 166, 164.
IDS and 160, respectively. For the first
time in the tournament first money waa
divided between two men In a twenty-bird
vent, Garrett and Roberts tying In (ho
third event of the day.

During tho past few years many attempt
neve been made to reach the North Pole by
ship, but on account of the Ice have all
been failures. It would seem, therefore,
that the only way to reach tbe coveted
spot Is by the balloon. There is also but
one way to obtain good health for those
who suffer from Indigestion, dyspepsia, con
stipation or liver and kidney troubles, and
that la by using Hostetter's Stomach Bit
ter. Don't fall to try It.
