The breaking of ex-Mayor Bemls' leg
Friday evening, while something of a hard
chip upon Mr. Pom In, has resulted In good
to the Omaha public. The connection be

bout the matter yesterday and found
that the accident was the result of a Ions
billboard blowing down upon Mr. Bern La and
; crushing blm to the pavement.
"We ought to have an ordinance requir
ing the Inspection of billboards the same
as buildings," said the mayor, "so that all
rickety boards could be condemned and
removed."
"I believe we already have such an ordi
nance," said the city clerk.
The quartet put their heads together over
a bound volume of the city ordinances, and
the result was that a law which has lain
dormant on the books for more than a year
was dug up. This law, beside providing
for the substantial construction and thor
ough bracing of billboard, specifies a cer
tain system of fees which shall be col
lected by the building Inspector, and makes
It Incumbent upon all persons erecting such
signs to submit plans to the building In
spector for hla approval. For a sign less
than 8x10 feet In size a fee of $25 per year
Is charged, for a sign less than 12x15 fee',
a fee of $50 per year Is charged and for a
aign less than 12x20 feet a fee of $100 per
jear Is charged.
This ordinance has not been enforced be
cause Mr. Carter didn't know of Its ex
istence, and the chances are he would never
have known of Its existence had not ex
Mayor Bemls called attention to It by
thoughtfully having his leg broken.
Mr. Carter at once wrote letters to the
"M. E. MulvlhlU company and several other
blllpostlng firms, notifying them that here
after tho ordinance would be enforced to
the letter.
Ex-Mayor Bemls may sue the city for
damages as the result of having bia leg
broken, but the fees for six months will
more than pay the Judgment.
Another "pedal Train.
Llnlnger .& Metcalf Co. have another erf
elal train standing at the Burlington depot
today. It consists of twenty-five new forty
foot C, B. & Q. cars loaded with Mitchell
farm wagons from, Racine, Wis. The same
firm ran a similar train of twenty-five cars
of threshing machines last Sunday. This
shows their faith in the outcome of Ne
braska crops.
