CHICAOa April 11. Conflicting Inter pretation put on the government rrop re port of the condition of winter wheat on April 1 net grain speculators to guessing today snd resulted In active and Irregu lar markets. In the end the bulla easily f.revalled and aided by a rapidly develnp ng situation for corn In the southwest everything ruled firm. May wheat closed 6'c up, Mar corn Vi"V higher and ilay oats unchanged. Provisions closed a shade to Be higher. Prices In wheat had a Rood upturn early, as a result of the rrop rrport anil strong cables the latter probably reflecting for eign interpretation on the crop report. Traders had expected a bearish report yesterday, but the curb action had pre pared them for an early bulge. May started c to Ho higher at TCVO'S'ic. but as Is customary on report days, the crowd sold and May dipped to 717c Speculation was rife ns to Just what war to take the report. The department set tha April con rlltldn at 711.7, as compared to PI. 7 a year ago. This condition, with three exceptions In fifteen years, ls the lowest. I he yield suggested by the report was 41.0i.jJ bushels. The department did not revise its figures on the acreage from the pro visional estimate In December of 32,0iO,O'-O acres. The department, however, promised to revise the acreage May 1, and with the ' knowledge that Kansas has plowed up 1. OsO.OHO acres and the probability of at least half as much more In Texas and Okla homa, traders figured that probably the acreage harvested this year would exceed bv onlv a small margin that of a year ago. If the acreage is brought down to last year's level the yield suggested by the report will be only about 35.0O0,8O bushels. This evidently was something of the Interpretation put on the report by the country. After the early selling by the trade, who followed the custom of twenty years and tried to knock down the 'price, a real bull marketed. The outside ! markets had held to the bullish opinion, leash wheat had worked Into a better po sition and the crowd that was carried 'short early hurried to cover. Duluth re , ported a good demand for both Duluth and 1 Manitoba wheat for export, with twenty five loads sold; the seaboard took nine loads and Chicago worked thirteen loads. iwn rlvelnneri independent ntsVngth And helped In the upturn. The professionals had to come Into the bull line and the ; result was a spurt of May up to 73c. This ! figure netted good profits to the bulls, who have consistently bought since low May 1 prices and consequently there was free I liquidation late that took off some of the t gain. Receipts continued very small and I made one of the fuctors In the advance. ' There was greater Interest In the market ithun for siime time oast. At the close iMay wheat was firm and li&74c higher at TZffi TiISc. Ijocal receipts were iwcive . rm nnnA nf contract erade. Minneapolis and Duluth reported 1n5 cars, or a total ' for the three points of 197, against 237 last 1 week and 2TU a vear ago. Primary receipts were 286.000 bushels, against 315.0W bushels last year. Heaboard clearances In- wheat and flour were light and equaled 126.18)0 bushels. Argentine, shipments were 1,076, 0"0 bushels, compared to 1,344,000 bushels a year ago. Early trade In corn was much the same ' character as that In wheat. Prices were i higher on cables, and the wheat strength, ! but there was an easing off as wheat re ! acted. About the time wheat began to ad i vance energetically, however, corn de veloped a lot of bullish news of Its own. Bt. Louis and Kansas City were bullish and were very strong. The latter point was predicting a big bull movement on the cash situation. Stocks everywhere seemed to be rapidly vanishing. In the west they are almost nil and receipts do not supply the demand. There was a good cash demand today, the outside set to buying and at no time were offerings lib eral. The large Interests that were in the market recently began buying September freely, shorts covering and prices turned vp again to 60c. May Jumped from low mark at M44c and touched 90c. Late proflt iflblnr denressed Drlces and May closed o higher at 6!c. Receipts were only 49 cars. Oats differed from the other pits and was rather a surprise to traders. May Was offered In liberal quantities which lent an air of mystery to the trading. Soma speculators thought the big holders was selling out; others It was merely tailers." On the lower prices receiving and commission houses bought in and the market assumed a better tone than for some time. The strength In corn and wheat aided. There was excellent buying In flantember. which sent nrioes UD well. There was a little reaction before the close and May after having advanced irom sic ' to 42&C. closed unchanged and steady at 11Ui- Rereints. 78 cars. Provisions were strong all day until iust before the close, when profit-taking took ;off some of the gain. Drain strength, the highest prices of the year for hogs and commission house buying for the outside account were the factnea In the early up I turn. Scalpors sold; shorts covered. The pit was not particularly active, but showed m sir amount of energy. Soe-Saw Mtmt Apparent with Ac- tlTlty of I.onlsTllle fc NashTllle. NEW YORK. April 11. The fears of a corner In Louisville & Nashville were somewhat abated today, which seemed to oe tno principal ractor in tne tendency toward recovery In the market. Specu lative sentiment showed Itself sensitive, however, to the movements In Louisville & Nashville. Thus when very large buy ing appeared In other parts of the market and when Louisville & Nashville ran off v last night, there was a rally elsewhere in the market. The eee-saw process was more or less conspicuous all day, espe cially at periods wnen Louisville & Nash ville was particularly active. The market for that stock continued very bearish on an enormous volume of dealings, but the fluctuations were by no means so wild as yesterday. There were Indications that the money powers back of the movement were disposed to handle it more tenderly out of consideration of the effect upon the rest of the market. The stock touched 12214 at the ton and closed with a net gain of IV. As for Southern Railway, It fell back to a po sition uniform with a - number of other active stocks In the market and moved narrowly. The strength which the mar ket showed as a whole was by no means universal or evenly distributed. The gov ernment crop report caused some depres sion nere and tnere among tne grangers, which was overcome. Amalgamated Copper was consistently strong and rose nearly 3 points at the last. The return to the cltv of one of the ririnclpal stockholders and directors was mputed as the cause of the movement. Monon ran off shurply 6 points on the American T. A T.,. Dominion I. A 8.... Oen. In spite of that fact packers were Indifferent buyers and a slow and weak market was experienced. The steer trade was slow and weak In mofct instances from start to (inish. In some cases sellers succeeded In getting what they oonaldered steady prices, but as a rule the prices paid were weak to a shade lower than yesterday. If buyers could not the cattle at their own bids they left them alone, so tnat tne morning was wen ad vanced before anything like a clearance was made. The cow trade was also slow and steady to a shade lower. The better grades were weak, the same as the medium and common kinds, and it was evident that packers are still trying to pound the market. Sellers were slow about taking off much, and packers were still slower about raising their bids. As compared with yesterday the market was steady to a shade lower. The feeling on Dulls, veal calves and stars was also a little weak In sympathy with the trade on cows and steers, but where the quality was satisfactory right close to steady prices were obtained. The stocker ana ieeaer traae was very uneven, the same as is usually the rase on a Friday. Anything good sold about steady without difficulty, hut good heavy cattle were very scarce. The common and especially the common Blockers, were as mucn ot a arug un me Dixrxri us ever, ana niost of the buyers refused to even look at such kinds. Buyers took hold freely and paid good, strong prices for what was offered and In some cases sales were made 5c higher than the same stuff sold for yes terday. In view of the light receipts everything was out of Hist hands at an early hour. Feeders have been very scarce all the week and commission men have been un able to 1111 the orders they have on hind.
