TIIK OMAHA DAILY BEE: FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 1002. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Jpeculatorc Hold Aloof, Waiting for Got ernment Crop Report. DORN ALONE HOLDS GRASP ON PRICES Other Two Orrals, at Merer of Bear tk Hews, Soffer Depression Bnlls Loyal to Provisions and Yaloes Inereaae. CHICAGO. April 10. Oraln speculation hung nr today while trader waited for ha government crop report and tried to JlKcount It. Condltlona on wheat favored learn aJI the day. but corn more than made up Iti losses It met with early In sympathy with wheat. At the close May wheat was A'a'a lower. May corn WSo up and May 7ats c down. Provisions closed 6'j7V4c to Uw higher. . . Everything early In wheat was nearlsn. Cables were lower, clearanres small, the weather warmer and the cash situation poor. Added to these was the opinion of many that the government report of the April crop condition would be bearish also. Receipts, while still small, were not so conspicuously light as yesterday. l.ndnr these Influences May opened Mi 'So to V Ao lower at Wa1V,c and gradually worked down to 71Vc The crowd showed little In sllnatlon to do anything one way or the ther. There was some farr early buying, hut It had only a temporary effect. Later there were some bad reports on crops and I 1 etter business reported from the sea board. Corn strength which developed late sided In steadying the market. May ral lied to 73c, but closed weak. S0Hc lower, at 71?ic. Receipts 27 cars, none contract. Minneapolis and Iuluth reported 137 cars, a total for the three poln' ' 164 cat; against 224 last week and 246 a year ago. Primary receipts were 36AO0O bu., compared with 41,000 bu. a year ago. Seaboard clear ances equaled giR.WO bu., against 792,000 bu. last year. The seaboard reported 22 loads taken for export. Corn bad the same sort of depressing news to start with as did wheat, but the touth western cash markets overcame the bearish Influences and a net gain was re sordert. Cables were lower, the weather was warmer and the bulls early seemed indisposed to support the market. Bt. Louis and the southwest were bullish and reported liberal covering of short accounts. Commission houses took most of the of ferings, much of il for the southwest. The movement or corn was still small. JAte in the day large local Interests came into the market and bid prices up. Foreign bids had Improved and New York reported sales of Australian shipments. May slumped sarly to 6K4frfSSo and sold bnrk to 6c and closed firm, o up, at 6!tK9(c. Re ceipts, 30 oars. Oats were dull and weak. Fair selling jn crop reports of good seeding conditions and the early corn weakness easily de- fressed prices. May was much weaker han the other options. Advices of better country movements hurt prices, but a late report of good cash sales brought a par tial rally. May sold down to 41c and cloned c lower at 41c Receipts, 124 cars. Provisions were active for a short time, but lapsed Into dullness with the general wait for the government report. Hogs ad vanced In price and packers supported lard and ribs. There was a fair cash demand for the former. Scattered selling for the outside depressed values for a time, but late buying sent them up again and brought a Arm close all along the list. May pork closed 10c up at $16.60; May lard 6W7c higher at S9.rn.67H. and May ribs bttfVkC bin her at .. 97ft. April 10. -There was a very wild market for Ioulsvllle & Nashville to day and the ominous jumps made by the price in its convuinive advance to 10 this morning aroused unpleasant nemorlcs of May 9 Inst year, when Northern Pacific was cornered, precipitating the severest panic in the history of the Stock exchange. Many of the active operators in Louisville A Nashville on the rise have fostered the supposition that a distressed short intercut was aimed at by the campaign. This dis position to buy stocks was suddenly cooled p.nd a preference for the selling side de veloped. . The disposition to sell was Increased by another flurry in the money market dur ing the afternoon and the selling movement spresd throughout the list, carrying prices of the active stocks very generally between and 2 points under last nlgnt. stocks which had been connplcuous for strength, notably Southern Railway and Missouri Pa- cine, aid not escape damage to tnis extent. In some cases the losses considerably ex ceeded the limits. Louisville alone of the firomlnent stocks continued to show fever nh strength, rebounding from each succes sive reaction. There was some covering by professional shorts before the close, but the selling was actively renewed and the closing was Irregular and not far from the lowest. The action of Louisville seemed to Indi cate that a short Interest In the stocks was feeling considerable distress to maintain Its position. The Wall street supposition is plausible that the disposition of the $5,OO0.0"0 new stock authorised involved a snort posi tion In the market technically necessitating the borrowing of the stock sold until the Stock exchange authorities admit the new stock to the list. Reports of buying for control by competing companies or of In tended consolidations nave all met witn official denials. As a tactical speculative measure for inciting speculation elsewhere In the market, the wild movement In Louis ville In demonstratably a failure. During trie first nour today over one-quarter 01 the total capital stock of the comp.ny changed hands and dealings for the day amounted to over nair tne capitalization. Within three days the number of shares sold has been many thousand in excess of the total capitalization of tne company. The highly speculative character of the movement Is therefore clear. The dealings in Southern railway con tinued very large today. In accordance with the hypothesis of a contest for control be tween the two companies, but it made no great progress upward and shared in the late reaction. The rise In Missouri Pacific was ascribed to nool oDeratlons based on the evident working out of extensions for the Gould system. The sensitive condition 01 tne money market was emphasized by today's announcements of a huge combination In the hardware trade, the undertaking by American capital to finance the London traction Improvement and the purchase by New Tortt capitalists of the Choctaw, Oklahoma A Gulf railway, all promising syndicate requirements for credits. For eign exchange declined further. Indicating further borrowing of foreign capital, and obviating the choice of further Immediate gold exports. Probably some of the late selling was due to a desire to close up accounts In expectation of the government crop report, after the closing. The bond market yielded to realizing In sympathy with stocks and became Irregular arter notaoie strengin in tne receniiy ac tive speculative dealings. Total sales, par value, $4,976,000. The quality of the offerings was not quite as good on the whole as yesterday, so that, the more desirable grades sold readily at very satisfactory prices. Receipts Included about the usual pro portion of beef steers, and the market started out steady to strong and active. It was noticeable, however, that buyers were picking out the better grades and leaving the commoner kinds until the last. That made the last end of the market seem a little slow and weak, but still cattle sold for about as much on the close as they would have brought at any time. There were fewer choice cattle on sale today than for some little time past. There was not mucn lite to tne cow trade this morning, and the tendency of prices was undoubtedly downward, the same as yesterday. Packers complained of the fact that the cow market is too high 'here, as compared with other potnts, and for that reason tney are siow to pay tne prices thev have been for the last several weeks. The medium grades and canners were also neglected today ana were nard to sen at any price, but that has been the case for so long that that is no longer a feature nf the traiie. Bulls, veal calves and stags sold at right close to steady prices wnere tne quality was at all good. The stocker and feeder trade was very slow today owing to the rain, which specu- imr tbnuant wouia Keep ouyers at nome. The quality of the offerings was also rather Inferior, so tnai priuear were unevenly lower all around. A few of the better grades may have sold right close to steady, but aside from those the market was slow and lower. Representative sales: BEEF BTEEKS. BOSTON. ADril 10.
