The effect of yes terday's AurrV In the money market was dlrslpsted today and an aggressive leader ship was developed on tne recovery in stocks. This leadership seemed to remain Ith the western men, who took hold of the market late last week. There was some evidence that their forces nao neen recruited from other sources, while their position was stronger by reason of the shaking off of a weak following by yes terday s reaction. rne extension 01 in short Interest during yesterday's decline was also a technical factor of strength In tnt'sy'a market. The reassurance of the speculative element was not immediately fvlt nti t hpra 'maa ennalrlratlle waverlnff and uncertainty In the early movementof prices. Ir. fact, there was not mucn in tne market un to noon outside of the persistent absorption of Ixuisvllle Nashville ami the sharp advance In Amalgamated Copper, apparently a continuation of yesterday's movement. Louisville & Nashville proved the central Agure of the market and its aggreestve ad vance was the dominating ngure in ine broadening demand for stocks. The deal ings In the stock were on an enormous scale, and there were indications that the western contingent of speculators was re inforced on the buying side by a well-known operator who only recently returned rrom a long trip to recuperate his health. The explanations offered for the rise were mostly In the nature of surmises on the part of speculators. The reported acquisition of the Atlanta, Knoxvllle & Northern railway wss be lieved to be the preliminary to active in cursion into new territory. The belief was proressed mat tne new Issue or (d.ojw.iAo 01 stock for the purpose of this purchase al ready had been marketed, thus freeing the market from the futare onerlngs or It. The aggressive policy undertaken by the company gave rise to conjectures as to the possiDiutles or the establishment 01 a com munity of Interest in the territory con cerned. Illinois Central and Southern preferred were benefited by sympathy. The move ment spread Into the southwestern stocks, and. 8t. Paul. Union Pacific. Southern Pa- clAc and Atchison were affected by the movement. There was a general movement of the Vanderbtlts of from 1 to 3 points. anu a large numoer ot minor siocks, 01 which the Wisconsin Central stocks were most conspicuous, were vigorously ad vanced, v The list of minor Industries affected was also large, as has. recently been the rule. The Westlnghouse Electric stocks made sensational advances of 144 for the com mon ana 10 tor tne nrst prererred on tne strength of an analogy with the history of General Electric. The whole market gave way on the RroAt-taklng which developed in the Inst our and the principal active stocks were carried back from 1 to 2 points. The mar ket cioseo easy. ine late of call loans today held nrm at 646 per cent. It was believed that this rate would check further shipments of gold, and this assurance was a considerable relief tb sentiment. The calling ofloans yesterday seemed to have strengthened the situation of tho banks so far that the feel ing in the money market today was much quieter. The Central of Georgia Income bonds were the features of the bond market at advances of 2 to 34 per cent. The Green Bay & Western Bs were also strong and active. Otherwise the bond market was rather quiet but Arm. Total sales, par vaiue, n, 1 .o.ir). united states Donas were all unchanged on the last call. A M. 2 CATTLE There was a good, liberal run of cattle here this morning, but the market held up in good shape in view of rather light receipts at other points and a liberal local demand. As compared Vlth yester day there was comparatively little change in tne prices paid and trade was rainy ac tlve and a reasonably early -clearance was made. A good proportion of the offerings con sisted of beet 'steers, and the quality as a whole was about uo to the usual standard Packers took hold In good shape and paid generally about steady, prices. In some cases the kinds that lust suited them seemed to sell a little stronger. The com mon cattle were, of eourse, neglected to some extent In view T the liberal offerings, but still they sold in about yestej-day's notches. There were also a good many western hayfed cattle on sale, and they sold readily at fully steady prices. The cow market was somewhat uneven this morning, but still on the average the prices paid were fully as good as yesterday. The choicest gradeg moved more freely, the same as has been the caae all along, and sellers had little trouble In disposing of such kinds at very satisfactory prices. The common canners and medium grades of cows, though, sold very slowly, and prices were certainly no more than steady. There was not enough change In the prices paid for bulls, veal calves and stags to be worthy of mention. The stocker and feeder trade attracted considerable attention todriy, as receipts were fairly liberal and the . demand for good stuff very active. Anything showing quality sold readily at stronger prices, and In fact cattle sold at the high point of the season. As high as 85.50 wa paid for some choice western cattle. Some rather light weight cattle sold as high as $5 15. The commoner kinds, and especially the com mon lightweights, were, not wanted, and' sold very slowly and at no more than steady nrlcea.
