Now th manager Is looking for a "beirwether" as the sheep leader. "We rrcall an Incident." says the editor of Zlon'a Herald of Boston, "which occurred many years ago, and which was very In fluential in helping the writer to correct notion concerning the dally press. In private circle of friends, made up largely of ministers, the dally newspaper became the subject of conversation mainly of severe crlftclsm and condemnation. Among that company was a-former governor, a man of large experience In public life, able, honored and revered, and familiar for fifty active years with Journalism. Finally, after patiently listening to th criticisms, be said, gently, but firmly: 'Gentlemen, you are mistaken. The public press is Indispensable for the dissemination of Information and for the direction of public opinion. In tho main it is right and beneficent. It Is al most miraculous In Ita alertness In going to the bottom of things, and usually It is cor rect and can be trusted.' " R. W. Griswold, a miner, employed at Gray Bros.' quarry at Point San Pedro, Cal., was blown from the tide of a preci pice on which he was working by a charge of giant powder one day last week. Th man had been lowered with rope to a point on the cliff about 100 feet, from Its base and waa engaged In tamping down a stick of the explosive when the accident occurred. Griswold used an Iron crowbar In Jamming In the charge, and suddenly the explosion took place. The aide of the cliff was torn open and Griswold, In a shower of bowlders and shale, wa hurled fully, fifty feet Into the air. He fell 150 feet. trlking among th branches of a small tree and breaking through them until his body struck the ground. " Griswold' akin was terribly lacerated by th flying rock and his neck, hands and face were badly burned. He managed, however, to make bis way to the road, where he attracted the attention of Mrs. E. B. McNear, who was passing in her buggy. The woman helped the Injured man into her1 vehicle and hastily drove him to San Rafael, where friends took him In charge and removed him to San Francisco for medical treatment R. C. Davis, aged 69, who live In Hayden avenue, Columbus, O., hat Just performed the astonishing and hitherto unprecedented feat of recovering bis Ions; lost voice by the simple process of , coughing up a tooth. About eighteen year ago he began to have trouble with his . throat, which con tinued uninterruptedly until last Sunday morning. Until be first experienced this trouble eighteen year ago he was an ac complished bast singer and attained con siderable reputation in Indianapolis, where he previously lived, as a basso in church choirs. Th theory Is that th piece of tooth, which waa his own, slipped down hts throat eighteen years ago and lodged in the esophagus, Just below the larynx. It formed a pocket in that position and re mained there without materially affecting hi ability to swallow food, but produced great Irritation to the laryngeal nerves. School teachers get some curious written excuses for absence. One of them reeds: "Mister sir, my Jason bad to be late today. It la his blxness to milk our cow. She kicked Jase In the back today when he wasn't looking or thinking of her actln', so be thot his bark was broke, but It ain't. But It Is black and blue, and the pane kept him late. We would get rid of that cow If we could. This Is the fourth time she kicked Jase, but never kicked blm late before. So excuse him for me." Miss Edith Griswold of New York ha demonstrated that a woman ran win auc cets as a solicitor of patent and she Is said to be wondering why other women do not follow her Into the profession, and always encourages them to do so, for. after several years' experience, the considers It eaty, profitable and interesting. Evidently, how ever, the realm of patent law Is too dry to attract women. It requires advanced tech nical knowledge In the one who practice It and thorough acquaintance with mechan ical drawing. Mia Griswold began as a draftswoman In the offlce of a friend. After aervlng a three year' appreatlceshlp In this office the opened one of her own. Patent soliciting Is an uneven business, In which long periods of Idleness alternate with "big Jobs.' But when It is known thst Miss Griswold ha sometimes made as high as $2,000 In a single month it will be seen that this profession has profit far In ad vance of those generally gained by women. Although Americana are auppoted to be so much more liberal in all matters connected with women. It Is a curious fact that three fourths of Mist Griswold! business hss come from foreigners. She hat also made a specialty of copyright and trademark law and Is an authority on both aubjects, hav ing published a very useful little brochure on tho former. Miss Griswold la se young and attractive that those who have heard of her achieve ments in such abstruse ubjects are apt to see her first with a shock of surprise. She relieves the confinement of offlce life and keeps herself n splendid phyalctl condition by long wheel spins and she escribes her power of concentrated aiyl prolonged effort largely to the aimple, comfortable, hygienic, but at the same time artistic, mode of dress which she evolved for herself and to which she has always strictly adhered. CO.H.MBIALITIES. The mothers of a Hoboken (N. J.) churcli are holding a nine days' season of prsyer for good husbands for their daughters. Incidentally the daughters are offering aux iliary petitions of their own. Much Interest, not wholly local. Is centered In the possible returns. The engagement of Princess Alice Mtrjr of Albany to the grand duke of Saxe Weimar and ElRenach Is reported from Th Hague. Princess Alice I the dauahter of the duke of Albany, Queen Victoria's tourth son. She is 19 years old. The grand duke la one of the richest men In Europe. H derives an Immense Income from estate In Holland and Silesia and Inherited a for. tune estimated at 320,000,000 from his grand mother. He waa born in 1878. Lovemaklng is to be elevated to the plan of the sciences. A college has been estab lished at Atwood, Tenn where degree will be conferred. Prof. T. J. Brooks, who has established the school, proposes to make "Doctors of Love" and "Bachelors of Hearts" of those who attend. The unique seat of love training Is known as the Col lege of Courtship. The aim of the founder Is to help all those whose amatory educa tion has been neglected. Cases have been tried In court wherein it was shown young women of a business turn have objected to taking chances on Inconstant wooers and have placed phono graphs where ,they would record protesta tions of love for use In case the swain proved fickle. Miss Daisy Mocha of Macon, Mo., did not propose to depend on any such machine-made evidence. She ha brought suit against George Parker asking $6,000 damages for breach of promise. In ' her complaint she says it was "only after long and urgent solicitation" that she promised to become the young man's wife, and In proof of this fact she will produca In court her parents, who will swear that they "were In an adjoining room and heard the Impassioned pleas of the said Parker." Evidently Miss Mocha appreciates the slang saying, "I am from Missouri. You must show me." A romance was rudely disturbed by th police at Marlon, Ind., recently, and the two principals are now languishing In Jail. Ira Hush, 31 yeara of age, was a prosperous and happy butdness man of Tonlcai III., a year ago. He had a handsome young wife, on whom he had lavished hla money and affections. In March, 1901, he employed Henna Fogle, a handsome young man, to work on one of his farms. Mrs. Hues be came Infatuated with the attractive young man, and on December 12 they eloped. The husband followed them to Hewannu, III., then to 8treator, 111., and from there to Greenville, O., and then to Marlon. The husband strolled about the streets, and was rewarded by seeing his wife and her lover enter a restaurant. A detective was notified and the pair was shadowed until they entered a rooming house, when they were arrested.
