CHICAOO, March . Oraln markets fol
lowed a nervous snd erratic course today.
Speculators were adverse to the consldera
tlon of anything but weather reports and
these being abundantly bearlah, prices slid
downward until wheat seemed to have ar
rived at an export baaia. Large aales on
the decline revived the dormant bull senti
ment and helped other pits sympathetically.
At the close May wheat wi a ahade
higher. May corn Ho lower and May oate
He lower. ITovlslona closed 6c to 10c higher.
There waa a general landslide In grains
before noon, led by wheat. Kalna In the
west and southweat smsshed prices; corn
was weaker on the warmer weather and
southwest selling, and oata felt panicky for
time. Wheat opened easy on cables and
the weather, but was met with fair sup
port for a time. A fair number of buying
orders were executed, but aoon came the
slump In the southwest. Kansas City and
St. Lnuis were earnestly bearish and prices
In those markets were rapidly slipping off.
At one time St. Ixiuls waa 2c under yes
terday's May closing price. The local
crowd here, who had been taking In some
stuff, . turned about to sell. Longs liqui
dated, stop lose orders were met, causing
till further weakness, and before May
had stopped on its downward course al
most lc was lost. Speculators overlooked
bull news. Liverpool continued steady nt
a small decline, seaboard clearances were
large and receipts were small. Statisticians
reported the crop in a less favorable posi
tion. There was a better continental de
mand reported early, and millers were re
ported large buyers of grain. Regarding
these conditions the weather seemed all
powerful. May, which opened WHc lower
at 74c to 73o. sold off to 734c. Then came
some covering and the break was stopped.
The big Influence, however, came late In
the shape of reports that wheat was on
an export basis. New York reported fifty
loads taken for export and local cash trad
ers worked the same number. The earlier
bullish factors then became more apparent
to the traderr and May wheat shot up to a
steady close, a shade higher, at 74W74HC
Receipts were 87 cars, none of contract
Erade, and Minneapolis and Duiuth reported
39 cars, or 8fi8 for the three points, against
422 last week and 48 a year ago. Primary
receipts were 537,000 bu., compared to
637,000 last year. Seaboard clearances In
wheat and flour equaled 701.000 bu.
Corn, like wheat, had a firm support the
first hour and then a sharp break. The
market was Influenced largely by the bear
ish feeling In the southwest. St. Louis was
riling here. There was a large trade, much
of which was liquidation. The sentiment
generally seemed bearish on the good
weather in the southwest, which Is ex
pected to hasten pasturing and an Increased
Interior movement. Cables were lower.
Stop loss orders brought further declines,
as did news that conditions favored seed
ing. When wheat reacted corn followed.
There was a fair cash business and some
stuff was worked here for export. The
recovery, however, was not so good as in
wheat, and May, after selling down to 604
ioic, closed easy, Vic down, at 081o.
Receipts were 72 cars.
Speculation in May oats was extremely
nervous, and waa hammered down lHo. At
this time large quantities were unloaded.
Again the market was comparatively strong
and there was nothing for sale. The weak
ness in corn and wheat affected the mar
ket accordingly and the later revival of
strength helped in a recovery. Added to
these factors, however, waa the important
rumor that the leading bull in May had
unloaded his holdings. July and September
options suffered with other grains, but
closed fairly well. May, which opened un
changed to Ho down at 43HS143Hc, dropped
to 42Ho, reacted and closed easy, Ho lower,
St 43Hc. Receipts were 79 cars.
In spite of a large run of hogs, a lower
hog market and the depression In grains,
provisions held up strongly. Packers and
commission houses were buying all prod
ucts. Ribs were particularly a purchase
and the strength In that product helped
pork and lard. At no time did hit of the
list show a tendency to decline. May pork
closed 10c higher at 816.52H. May ribs Bo
up at $9.46 and May ribs So higher at $3.50.
Estimated receipts tomorrow: Wheat, 25
cars; com, 105 cars; oats, 110 cars; hogs,
83.000 head. - - -

cattle There was not a neavy run of
cattle today, and as packers were all anx
ious for supplies the market on desirable
gradea of killers was active and steady to
strong all around. It only took a com
paratively short time to dispose of prac
tically everything on sale.
A fair proportion of the offerings this
morning consisted of beef steers, buc there
were none too many to meet the require
ments of the trade. Buyers were all out
early, and anything at all desirable sold
without much trouble at good, strong
prices. In soms cases . sales were made
that were undoubtedly a little higher. The
commoner klnda, though, were neglected
to some extent, the same as ususl, but they
sold for fully aa much as the same kinds
brought yesterday.
The cow market continued active and
strong on tho better grades, and as high
as $6.60 was paid for good stuft. In view
of the liberal demand and the light offer
ings of good stuff everything answering
to that description was soon disposed of.
Buyers were calling the market today at
the high point of the aeason. The medium
kinds of cows and heifers, as well as the
canners, did not show much change from
yesterday. The demand was limited and
the prices paid were uneven, but on the
whole the market was not far from steady
with yesterday.
Bulls, veal calves and stags showing
quality all Bold well at fully steady prlcea,
but the common kinds were neglected and
no more than steady.
There waa quite a demand from the
country yeaterday for Blockers and feed
ers, and yard trsders succeeded in dispos
ing of the bulk of ths cattle they had on
hand. They were a little csutlons todsy,
however, in buying very many more. Good
stuff commanded steady prlcea, but when
it earns to the medium kinds and common
stuff the market waa slow and a little
lower. Representative sales:

HOGS There was a heavy run of hogs
here today, and in fact receipts were the
heaviest of the week to date. Other mar
kets were quoted lower, and as a result
f rices at this point took a drop of (ttlOc.
t was an uneven market, so that sales
were made all the way from nearly steady
to a dime lower. The decline applied to
all weights, though It waa, perhaps, more
noticeable on ths Tighter loads owing to the
fact that there were so many good hogs on
ssle that packera could fill their orders
without taking ths light stuff. The quality
of ths " offerings as a whole was good.
Trading was fairly active at the decline,
so that the bulk of the offerings was dis
posed of In good season. Good wetght
hogs sold largely from $6.80 to $6.40.
Medium weights went mostly from $6.10 to
rt.20, ana ngntweignis sold irom .io down

SHEEP There were not as many sheep
and lambs on sale todav aa arrived yes
terday, and the quality waa nothing extra.
The market ao far as the better grades
was concerned waa fairly active and Just
about steady. When it came to the less
desirable kinds the market was not as
lively, and in some cases sellers thought
they were unable to get as good prlcea aa
were paid yeaterday for the same grades.
The bulk of the offerings, though, was
disposed of in good season at very satis
factory prices.
Feeders continued In light supply and
the demand waa fully as large, so there is
no change In the market to note.
