Running for councilman on tbe ticket ot party that Is hopelessly in the minority is an honor that was declined today by Will H. Love, who was chosen by the fu Rlonlsts for alderrnanic candidate in tin Fourth ward. This is one of tbe wards in which the fusionlsts planned to concentrate tbeir efforts. It was supposed that a alight factional opposition to John S. Bishop, tbe republican candidate, would give their nominee a big advantage, but a little In vestigation demonstrated the fallacy of their presumption, and after talking the matter over with some of tbe democratic and popu list leaders of the city, Mr. Love today an nounced hla intention of withdrawing from the race. Mr. Love waa the beet known man on the ticket and hla withdrawal will Injure those candidates who remain faithful to tbe cause. He la grand keeper of records and seal for tbe Knights of Pythias of Nebraska, and In declining the nomination said that hla duties In this capacity would prevent him from devoting any time to campaign work. Faaloalata Badly Demoralised. The fusloaista are badly demoralised In this city. Tbey bad hoped to elect council- men in the First, Third and Fourth warda. but It la now almost a foregone conclusion that they have no chance of success in any but the' First ward, and in that district tbe leaders are In dispute aa to ths quallfl catlona of their nominee, Robert Malone. There are now two vacancies In their list of alderrnanic nominees and onty one can didate has been named tor a city office. All Indications point to an overwhelming victory for the republicans, with very likely an Increased majority. In some of tbe wards the vote may be close, but it Is con ceded that at least five of the seven repub lican candidates for council will be elected. Experlmeats with Oats. Tbe following bulletin regarding reaults of experiments with two varieties of oata, has been issued by the Nebraska Experiment station: In the spring of 1901, two varieties ot oats from among those grown at tbe ex periment station were aelected for distri bution to co-operative experimenters who bad on previous occasions carefully con ducted cxperlmenta in co-operation with the station and bad made accurate re ports. The oata sent out I to test were both Russlsn varieties that had been Im ported aome years before and had become adapted to the region and improved while being grown here. Ths variety designated aa university No. 1, waa selected on account of Its ability to make a crop on a very limited amount ot moisture and In a ' hot season. These are the two moat unfavor able conditions for the oat plant and great resistance to them In any variety la seldom found, especially in a wbite oat. Tbe oat in question has a short upright stem open panicle a small white berry with thin nun. and matures earlier than any variety we bave grown at the experiment atatlon. Unt verslty oat No. 2, la a taller crowing, later maturing oat, with a larger, plump berry, and Is much less drouth reslstent, but hat less tendency to lodge than other large varieties grown at the station. Results obtained at the station indi cate that the university No. 1 would be a valuable variety for the central part of tbe atate and tbat university No. 2. would be best adapted to the eastern, and particularly the northern portion, but it la not ot aa much promise aa tbe other. Senator Dietrich today secured the passage In the senate ot hla bill for tbe erection ot a public building at Hastings. The bill as originally drawn called for an appropriation ot $150,000, but in committee this sum was reduced to $125,000, and In that form waa adopted by the senate.
