Although corn prices held In tha main better than yesterday's close, there was disappointment over the fact that the crowd did not take to the bullish view of the government report and support the market. The reserves In first hands were estimated at 29 per cent and were figured out to be 394,000,000 bu., compared with 776,200,000 bu. last year. Skaek of Metkaea's Captare Offset by Kaffir Sapport. NEW YORK. March 11. Wall street sentiment experienced a sense of relief when the early reports of the London mar ket showed that powerful support was ac corded the Kaffir market there and that very little damage had resulted elsewhere from the shock of the capture by the Boers of General Methuen. The price of British consols yielded only a shade, which was probably the most accurate index of the real severity of the event in Its effect upon British financial affairs. The revised re ports of the output of gold from the Wlt watersrand for February probably of more real Importance at this stage of the war, and its showing may help to explain tne inumerence 01 tne ixnaon market to the Methuen disaster. According to this report by the Transvaal Chamber of Mines 31.406 ounces of gold were taken out during February, compared with 70,340 in January, 63,897 In December and no more than 39,096 in November. This rate of resumption or the gold output means much to the foreign financial world and Indirectly to New York, while It is called upon to supply European detlclencles due to the cutting off of the South African supply of gold. The demand was In good shape. so that cattle began to move toward the scales In good season, and the bulk of the desirable stuff was out of first hands at a reasonably early hour. Beef steers made up the big end of tha receipts this morning and several bunches showed considerable quality, as will be seen from the sales below. As a general thing the market on everything that was at all desirable was fully steady and active. In somj cases salesmen who had cattle that were rather lacking In quality and flesh found it a hard matter to get steady prices, but anything desirable met with ready saU. There were several more bunches of hay fed cattle here today and they also sold at Just about steady prices. The demand for the better grades of cows and heifers continued active and fully steady prices were paid. As offerings of Eood stuff were somewhat limited the mar et took on considerable life and the bulk of the stuff was soon sold. When It came to the medium kinds and canners, how ever, the market was far from being active, and In fact sellers were calling canners In particular very slow sale. Bulls, veal calves and stags sold In about the same notches they did yesterday. Blockers and feeders of good quality sold freely this morning at good, steady prices. Cattle lacking quality, however, were hard to dispose of, and In some cases salesmen were caning aucn ainus a lime lower. The mar ket opened firm, 2(S6 points higher, on gen eral buying brought on by the failure of Liverpool to fully respond to the heaviness here of yesterday. Moreover, the trade here had some reckoning In a serious de cline under the bad South African news, but to which English traders seemed to attach little Importance, so far as Its effect on cotton and ootton goods waa con cerned. Following the call, Liverpool con tinued to work higher and prices In the local redan Improved. Houston estimated small receipts for tomorrow and southern spot market news was bullish. But after rising to 8.80c for Msy and to 8.86c for July, fresh liquidation set In and bear pressure became a feature. A large esti mate for tomorrow'a New Orleans receipts and fears of stop orders being reached caused room longs and shorts alike to the selling side. Before a rally occurred May broke to 8.72c and July to 8.76o. . For the rest of the session the market was very feverish at times, stiffening on de mand from shorts to secure profits, but later weakening again under pressure of long cotton. The close waa barely steady, with prices 4 points lower to 1 point higher. Total sales were estimated at 25,000 bales. NEW ORLEANS. March 11.
