j Slightly Dawa.
CHICAGO, March 1 Oratn speculators
were almost aa Indifferent to trade today
a they were to the repeated reporta of
crop damage. Trade wu dull, fluctuatlona
vera very narrow and at the cloae May
wheat waa only o higher. May corn a
lower and May oata a a hade down. Fro
Vlelona cloned Mfl&o higher.
The "crop killer" waa the moat Impor
tant factor again today, but hi mutter
Ings were not very influential. Continued
reporta of bad condition came from Kan
aaa. Oklahoma, Texas and Indiana. Re-
forta from the last-named state were to
he effect that two-third of the wheat
land locked aa though nothing had ever
been on It. ' Kanaaa City reported that
Kanaaa and Oklahoma, which rained 126,
000,000 bushels of wheat last year, would
not (trow 75,000,000 buahela this year. In the
southwest there waa atlll no molnture,
though there were aigna of rain. Statis
tical papers atated that crop eondltlona
were fair, notwithstanding the damage re
port. Cablea were eomewhat Improved
and northwestern recelpta were amall.
Dullness In trade, however, kept May
prices hovering cloaely around 76He the
greater part of the day. May opened un
changed at 76c, aold aa high aa 76c and
cloned barely firm. Vc up at 7Hc An ef
fort to break corn had a allghtly depress
ing Influence for a ahort time. Local re
celpta were 39 cara, 3 contract; Minneapolis
and Duluth reported 238 cara, a total for
the three polnta of 265 cars, against 670 laat
week and 480 a year ago. Primary recelpta
were 400,000 buahela. compared to 537.000 last
year. Seaboard clearances equaled only
163,000 buahela. The closing firmness waa
due to the Ohio March crop report, making
the winter wheat condition 62, or 10 polnta
lower than on January 1.
Corn ruled slightly bearlah after the
somewhat steady opening. Cables were
slightly Improved and early offerings were
light. This brought May opening prices a
shade up to a shade down, but the south
west began to lose Its bullish enthusiasm
en the lessening of the feeding this morn
ing, and on an attempt to break the mar
ket by a St. Louis plunger May prices
sagged to 614c. A fair demand, both local
and from commission houses, absorbed the
offerings and May reacted easily to ffl'-io.
Later trade was only a scalping aflalr,
clearancea were very amall and May closed
eaay, lower at 61&6lc. Receipts were
101 cars.
Continued light recelpta, a slight Im
provement In the cash situation and the
fear of the unexpected In May operations
Influenced a small, nervous market In oats.
Fluctuatlona were rather wide for the dull
ness of the pit, but In the end conditions
were about unchanged. July and Septem
ber were aold freely, but ahowed little
change In prlcea. May was bought to some
extent. The opening for May waa a shade
lower and prices eased to 43c, cloaed
steady, unchanged at 444o. Receipts, 75
cars.
Provisions manifested considerable
strength in the face of large receipts and
lower hog prices. The early stock yards
weakness Induced selling, which waa sharp
for a time. Later the offerlnga atarted up,
a fair demand appeared and prlcea ad
vanced firmly. Trade In general waa quiet.
May pork sold as low as (15 and closed 15c
higher at 115.25, May lard closed 10c up at
38.37K and May ribs 6c higher at
Estimated recelnts tomorrow: Wheat, 10

HEW YORK STOCKS A5D BOKD9.
Market Makes a Remarkable Exhibit
af Btreasth la fsea.
NEW YORK, March . Today's stock
market made a remarkable exhibit of
strength In spots. Several of the custo
mary leaders were Included In the upward
movement. The strength of the market,
nevertheless, failed to carry conviction as
to the genuineness of the demand, which
lifted prices to a higher level. As the ad
vance gained headway various outstanding
short Interests were put under presure
and bought rather urgently to cover short
contracts. The demand was so far unques
tionably genuine. Otherwise there was the
appearance of manipulation. Thla waa
partly due to the character of the atocks
which advanced most conspicuously, stocks
which are often not heard of for weeks at
a time on the exchange. Nor was there
any tangible news today to account for
tbelr strength, either affecting them Indi
vidually or the general situation. In fact,
the conditions which made the bear argu
ment earlier In the week continued In force
today. The great snowstorm, which
blocked traffic, threatened Inroads upon
future showing of earnings. The engage
ments of gold for export on Saturday were
Increased today to 33,300.000. with the pos
sibility of further engagements tomorrow
still open. Reports of friction over freight
rates In the southwest and of the dissolu
tion of freight associations on account of
threatened action by the government con
tinued to be heard. These would all have
Induced selling of stocks In the speculative
temperature which prevailed earlier In the
week. They were ignored today. A very
sentimental effect was produced by the
persistent show of strength In Chicago A
Northwestern and the character of the
buying which lifted, and which had every
appearance of genuine investment demand.
It was this movement which directly en
couraged the heavy buying of St. Paul and
which leavened the whole market In the
course of the day. It was supplemented
by rim liar movements In other nigh grade
closely held storks, such as Pullman,
which rose an extreme 16 points; Chicago.
St. Paul, Minneapolis tc Omaha T, and a
number of less conspicuous examples.
Northwestern itself touched 233. During
the existence of a corner In the stock
years ago It touched 230, which waa the
previous record. Pullman, Omaha, General
Electrln and Chicago tt Eastern Illinois
also made record prices today. Another
notable movement waa In Colorado Fuel,
which gained 10 points on a very active de
mand and a feverish movement. Thla
movement Is supposed to be directly re
lated to that In Colorado A Southern,
which waa Inclined to rest today, although
the second preferred waa advanced 3
points. Outside of these the moat notable
movements of the day were In a varied
assortment of low-grade obscure stocks.
The movement ultimately extended, how
ever, to some of the soft coalers, led by
Pennsylvania and other prominent 'stocks.
The late dealings showed the usual proflt
taklng and the closing waa Irregular. Ratea
for call loans continued at the higher level
established during the week. The an
nouncement that the San Francisco trac

bly were a strategic move owing to the
negotiation of exchange on the San Fran

CATTLE Cattle recelpta were far from
being exceaelve today aa will be seen from
the table above and as packers all seemed
to have liberal orders the market wss
lively from start to finish and everything
was disposed of In good season. There waa
very little change from yesterday, however.
In the prlcea paid.
A fair proportion of the offerings thla
morning conalated of teef steers. There
were none too many to meet the require
ments of the local trade, so that sellers had
no trouble In disposing of what they had
at good steady prices. The more desirable
grades, of course, were In the best de
mand, but atlll even the common kinds
moved quite freely at fully as good prices
aa were paid yesterday.
Buyers were also anxious for cow stuff.
and particularly for the better grades. They
were ail out eariy loosing lor me ainus
that are good enough to aell from 94 00 tip,
and it did not take aellera long to dispose
of such kinds. Canners and medium grades
sold In about tne same notcnes tney nave
for some time past, and trade on such
kinds was none too active. The demand
aeema to be limited and the prices paid
show considerable variation.
Bulls, veal calves and atags also com
manded lust about steady prices. Good stuff
sold freely, while common kinds were more
ap iMia nearlected.
There were comparatively few stock cattle
In the yards this morning. Good feeders
In particular were scarce, so that anything
showing quality and Aeah waa picked up
In a hurry at good, ateady prices, no matter
whether the cattle were heavy or light
The common kinds, though, sold rather
slowly, the same as they have all along.

HOGS Recelpta of hoirs were not aa
.yy yxerday, but the market opened
a little easier. In extreme cases aaies
were made that were a nickel lower, but
the market soon firmed up and the bulk of
the hoga sold at righ. around steady prices.
As the morning advanced trading became
more active and toward the close sales
were made that were stronger than yes
terday. The bulk of the offerings was dis
posed of In good season, but as is gen
erally the case, a few light loads were left
until the last, and on such klnde the mar
ket waa slow. The bulk of the good welaht
hogs sold from 96 1 to 46.16, medium weights
went from 36.96 to 96.06, and the light hogs
sold from 95.90 down. Representative sales;

atarted In from the flrst to pound the
market As a general thing both sheep and
lambs sold fully a dime lower than Tester
?ay'. Trade, however, was fairly active at
the decline, when It came to anything at all
desirable, so that the bulk of the offerings
was disposed of In good season. The com
mon kinds, however, were not In very good
demand, and aellera found It a little hard
to dispose of that class of stuff, and In
some cases had to take off more than a
dime.
The demand for feeders continued In good
shape, and anything showing quality sold
at very satisfactory prices.
